Matchmaking to solve toxic PvP

  • My suggestion to solve the problem with PvE-players and new players losing all fun in the game because they constantly get destroyed by toxic PvP-players is a good matchmaking system.
I for myself really enjoy the game as it is but I recognize many players that can’t. A matchmaking system would allow to partially separate different play styles and skill levels while still preserving the SWAG.

Does anyone know whether there already is something like this? And if so why it still fails quite often? Or is there a cause not to implement it?

(Sry if I made some mistakes. I’m not a native speaker.)

  • @dasbeuteltier24 pvp isn't toxic. And there is nothing in game nor will there because its about interactions between crews.

  • @captain-coel I didn’t say PvP is toxic. I said, there is toxic PvP. And the good thing about a matchmaking system would be that it wouldn’t just separate PvE from PvP like private Servers. It could reduce PvP encounters for PvE players but not getting rid of them entirely.

  • @dasbeuteltier24 but why should there be a reduction? This is a no holds shared world adventure, where you get to do what you want until you see other players and then you have to figure it out. If new players or people doing pve are getting rolled by papers, its not the pvpers fault.

PvP can't survive without PvE and PvE without PvP would be, well, boring...

    Does anyone know weather there

Whether here or there or anywhere lesser, I don't know weather any better than a feather wherever. A bit wetter heretowither perhaps?

    🙂😉😁😆😂🤣

  • @captain-coel But a new Pirate on the Seas has no choice when he is threatened by an experienced Crew. He doesn’t know the game well enough. So if new players would encounter other new players it would be balanced. And as they learn they become more experienced players.
I don’t think separating PvP from PvE is a good idea. Just tweaking the chances so that you always must be aware of PvP but it doesn’t interrupt you to much while doing PvE.

    Toxicity ≠ PvP-Players for a quick clarification.

As for a solution, currently Sea of Thieves takes all submissions w/proof through the Support Forum to ban toxic players. The fix already exists but people need to learn how to use it. The reason (I believe) in-game reporting doesn't exist is because the session is not recorded in the servers which means SoT won't have proof of toxicity unless the victim records this in progress and submits it through the forums.

Key phrase right here... If new pirates only sailed with other new pirates or only fought against other new pirates, their rate of learning would be significantly slower - take it from a professional teacher who loves to pair up his inexperienced students with their more experienced peers to typically great results. 😉

But he doesn’t pair up a fifth grade student with a tenth grade student.

The benefit matchmaking offers is that it can be modulated so that there are still chances to meet far better pirates but more likely they aren’t that much better than you.

True - but that's because outside of tutoring or mentorship programs, he can't.

...but imagine if he could! 😊

Wider pool of pirates = wider exposure and experiences. It's really that simple.

While I totally agree with you, fun and interesting encounters for skilled PvP-crews shouldn’t take the fun from new players (or PvE-players). There has to be a possibility for such encounters because that’s what the SWAG is all about. But the knowledge of the possibility of such an encounter may be enough to keep the thrill up. Of course PvE-players need to meet PvP from time to time.

  • toxic PvP-players

    skilled PvP-crews

I can tell you. These are wrong.
Pvp itself isn't toxic, the players are. Even a Pve player who just minding his own can be toxic just by typing or speaking.

And Skill Pvp crews, a newbie who has never played the game before, goes Solo in this game can easily out wit and beat a full 4 man crew with the 'Tools' of the game.

  • This wouldn't help at all - those that are toxic and just after new players will just use smurf accounts to start a session, get on a server full of new players and then invite their friends.

Congrats, you're now playing with other new players and those who know how to game the system. All those that are more experienced, might fight a challenging opponent, keep TT players alone, help new players along or even invite you to an alliance (without backstabbing) &c will not be in your server.

  • Not sure how one could make any form of algorithm to sort out players based on skill and playstyle.

There are lots of new pirates, that are naturally good at PvP and/or are mimicing the playstyle of popular more agressive streamers. So they would slay other new pirates of they were sorted by playtime/levels.
Likewise there are lots of older pirates that are bad at or do not like PvP.

There are also lots of really bad mouthed PvE players, who get really nasty when sunk/attacked. There are also a lot ow new pirates that are really nasty against others on the seas.

Not all PvP players are naturally toxic in their language and behaviour.

As i see it, there can be no good way of separating different kind of crews/players. The only thing we can do, is to be nice ourselves, and hope that it will spread.

Honestly I think you might be backwards on this. Someone with more years and experience make great pairings. A 10th grader can teach a 5th grader a lot. In the same way we had a random brig the other week, one very experienced player, me, and a total noob. The new guy totally understood the basics and clearly had watched some "new player" videos on youtube, so they were very useful with direction. We taught the guy SOOOOO much, and he ended up with a great haul of treasure too by the end of the night. With your system he'd have not learned so much as fast and seen how good the game is with experience. You won't get that with only new players, it will instead just be a bunch of new people getting frustrated fumbling around trying to figure out the systems. There will still be experienced people making new accounts and slaughtering the new players for fun.

  • Matchmaking would not work.
There is no ranking system here.
Rare is not going to change their stance on the way PvPvE is implemented.

These posts just need to stop.

  • I'm almost exclusively a pvper. I run with 2 others in a brig and we server hop until we find high population servers and proceed to hunt down every emissary flag and player we can find. However, I do find us being toxic quite often. Honestly, I only speak for us so I don't know about other pvpers. But we tend to be toxic due to one thing and one thing only. Running. We look for a good fight. That's it. Regardless of loot. We just look for a good fight. Nothing else. So imagine how big of a waste of time it is when we spend 30 mins chasing a level 1 emissary flag just to sink them in 2 minutes. Literally. Just. Turn around and fight. Hell. We tend to be nice and reinburse you in some way when you do that. We just hate all the damn running.

    Sheesh.

  • Ahoy!

The team have recently given their thoughts on the topic of PvPvE and discussed it in our latest Podcast.

There is also a thread for Custom servers here where you can read more.

Sea of Thieves will always be a shared world adventure game, with elements of both PvP and PvE but Joe did speak about Custom Servers about a year ago. These servers will not offer Gold or progression IF they become available to the public. Private Servers are still being tested with our Partners.

    Dropping anchor on this now.
