Flower Picking - Fun Fun Fun!

  • Ok, so the islands are absolutely gorgeous, breath taking, stunning!

But most players just sprint their way around, scanning furiously for obvious treasure glints or captain's (if even that).

How about rewarding players for taking it slower.

Simple idea: hunters call rewards players for collecting certain flowers/herbs/shrubbery. Different flowers are in different regions bla bla bla

Let's say it is to season their meats!

Extra activity to do on the islands, new way to level up the faction, rewards players for exploring and taking it slow, and completely optional (and I assume easy to add in terms of complexity).

Destiny 2 has it. Red Dead Redemption 2 has it. It's chill. Agree?

  • Amazing idea! I love the idea of more stuff to do on the islands :)

  • Yeah, it is a simple, unoriginal idea... but could go about changing how players explore and experience the islands.

  • @paparug420 fantastic idea!

Genuinely this fits in so well with the rest of the game - Merrick is collecting all this food - he needs herbs and spices to make his generic southern fried chicken name.

  • I like it i do have my hunters call leveled out the flower part would spice up the ship a bit to and its a good morale booster

  • @paparug420 Love it. There should be collectible flowers for commendations hidden in nooks and crannies on cliffsides and in caves, and then more generic ones that are growing in more obvious places. Great idea!

  • I could imagine a cinematic with pirates wearing daisy crowns frolicking down the beach playing "What a wonderful world" as a shanty

  • I have 2 concerns. 1 being that the environment is rather static - it doesn't really change all that much (during a session anyways) - that's in complete juxtaposition with your idea where additional plants would have to be added randomly, and then subsequently removed by the player. Secondly, the Merchan Alliance already deals with sugar and spice and everything nice - it wouldn't really make sense for them to get it from the Hunter's Call only to resell it.

  • @galactic-geek Ah, but this is not specifically spices or sugar - just flowers. Not necessarily even for food - remember the call are hunters and as such have need for anti-toxins, healing salves and even poison!

Most of the above are usually plant-derived remember!

Adding in pick-able flower patches is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility - so many other games have the feature after all and a patch of daisy in a low-res render won't be too intensive on the old hardware or server.

I worry about what game-breaking potions this might lead to in the future - for example, a throwable that you don't throw, but that you drink instead to completely nullify poison, or to numb the pain of a broken limb.
Actions have consequences and being able to circumvent that keeps you from learning a lesson.

The only reason I see this aspect as remotely doable is that they could be treated like loot (where you find them, pick them up, and transport them to a certain company). If feel like there should be more to it than that. They are plants after all... It would also be kind of redundant, being too similar to GH where you essentially dig something up, but without a map, like with the MA animal voyages (you might get a drawing instead).

  • @galactic-geek what about if the plants we have been transporting for the merchants are actually now available in singular form to dig up as you say.

I agree re: potions and that would not be something we did - I think it would be a secret Merrick and the Bilge Rats keep to themselves!

  • @galactic-geek I think it would be like RDR2's plants and fliwers and herbs, they're planted in random spots, and you press interact to pick them. Perhaps the generic ones could spawn at typical X marks the spot locations, and more rare varoeties would be in developer handpicked spots. It wouldn't be a voyage or any sort of required thing, maybe save for a cool flowery druid-like cosmetic set and additional commendations. So while you're walking on an island, you can just walk around and find things to pick, vines on walls, roots to dig up, berries and flowers to pluck. To keep them stealable, add a "Hunter's Flora Crate" which, if the herbs are not stored in it, they will wither and become worthless. You cannot take them back out, but you can sell the crate to the hunters for the value of everything inside. You can hold as many as you like, but if you don't put them away within 5 minutes of finding them, thry perish.

So when I'm stocking up or doing a voyage, I can run around and earn some extra coin by being a florist on the side. Plant skeletons could even drop some unique flowers! The glowing flowers on Devil's Ridge could be a kind that you could pluck, the big red poisonous alcohol flowers on Snake Island would be cool, and maybe give you a woozy hallucination state when you first pick them. Seavines, and coral, and flowers, roots, berries, vines, blossoms, and everything. It'd be cool!

  • @paparug420

One does not have to force players to collect stuff from the islands ... The islands are there , the skies are there , and time is there , if you want to enjoy the island , then who is holding you back? When i play Solo , and have no treasure then i just sail or sit on a rock to enjoy everything i see and hear , very tranquiling i would dare to say.

  • @clumsy-george I do find myself playing the music a lot lately when I sail just for the music.

  • @klutchxking518 But I want there to be a voyage - Hunter's Call doesn't have any right now! I find that odd too, because during the Festival of Fishing they had 1 that didn't stick around afterwards like I thought it would... 😒

  • @galactic-geek I suppose a voyage would be cool, but I'd like it to be optional.... maybe a "Hunter's Feast" voyage that sends you after a mix of meats, fish, fruits, and herbs, and in return, the chef makes a feast and gives you a bunch of good food exclusive to the voyage than can give you benefits beyond a regen bar

    Example Recipes:

    Shipwreck Stew
    3x Rose Wrecker
    2x Shark Meat
5x Barnacle Flowers (they grow attached to wrecks, idk)
Grants more breath underwater for a short time after eating, heals 70, 3 bites per plate
    Servings per cookup: 4 Plates

    The Devil's Dinner
    2x Ashen Devilfish
    1x Seashell Devilfish
4x Lava Blossom (only grows in the lava cracks on an erupting island)
    1x Burnt Worms
    1x Burnt Leeches
    1x Burnt Grubs
Grants immunity to fire for a short time after eating, heals 70, 3 bites per plate
    Servings per cookup: 3 Plates

Obviously with balancing, that'd be a cool and unique and rewarding voyage for the hunters.

  • @clumsy-george yes true! I was doing an animal voyage for the merchants alliance, taking it slow, and this was where I had the idea.

  • @klutchxking518 love the idea of a flower crate for storing, and that plant skeletons could drop rare flowers.

Also flowers growing on the sea bed, or even on ship wrecks??

    Omg yes!

I really like the brainstorming going on in here, lemme try!

Why not have the the type of fish be a set thing, but the variety of that fish be mutable, and each type adds a slightly different buff to the end product, which all stack:

    Shipwreck stew:
*rose wrecker increases your held breath time by 15 seconds and heals 20 (total for 3 rose wreckers: +45 sec breath, heal 60)
*sun wrecker increases swim speed (while emptyhanded) by 1%, adds 10 sec, heals 15 (total for 3 sun wreckers: +3% emptyhanded swim speed for 30 sec, heals 45
*moon wrecker increases swim speed while holding loot (or a crate) by 1%, adds 15 sec, heals 10 (total for 3 moon wreckers: +3% swim speed while carrying loot [or a crate] for 45 sec, heals 30)
*blackcloud wrecker decreases damage from fire and lightning (also decreases lightning knockback) by 5%, fills overheal bar by 34%, heals 34 (total for 3 blackcloud wreckers: fire/lightning dmg and knockback -15%, fully fills overheal bar, fully fills health)
*snow wrecker increases plate count by 1, increases all bonuses from the other types of wreckers in the stew by 15%, increases total health and overheal bar by 10, heals 20 (only 1 snow wrecker may be used in a stew)

Obviously this is just brainstorming, so it may be completely unbalanced.

I'm also aware that it's probably way too complex to be implemented, but it's always fun to speculate

  • Things that give you immunity or adjust "stats" are not what this game is about. As for the whole voyage bit, every voyage to date has had optional counterparts - this would be no exception. Want to find chests, go find them. Want to fight skellies and get skulls, go at them. Want to hunt animals for food, hunt away. Want to pick up flora, flaunt away.

  • What exactly does Destiny 2 have that’s similar to this? Patrols are the only thing I can think of and even then they work pretty differently.

  • @ninja-naranja collecting planet resources. Spin metal etc

They are randomly found throughout the world's and you collect them

  • @paparug420 if only they were useful for something besides trading them at The Spider.

Still grab them whenever I see them because Glimmer!

  • Why stop at flowers? The islands are so static, being able to interact with them would be nice.

  • I love it, its a shame we cant interact enough with the islands but its a good start.

  • @mferr11 I still wish my parrot would fly into and out of trees.
Cats could scratch trees, dogs wee up them... the possibilities are endless.

  • I appreciate the dog comment above is a little crass, but I hope the intention is clear - pets and other interactive elements on islands can only add to the immersion!
