The cutlass is fine and a viable weapon for cqc like it should be.
Learn to block and evade!

Need also skill to know what weapons are good for cqc and what not ^^
Loadouts are meant for situational use. Rare want you to use all weapons for specific situations.
There is no loadout that is viable in all situations.Arena is broken i agree.

Do you remember the days when the sword was terrible and someone had time to stand still, reload their gun and shoot you again, all while you were slashing away at them? No? The sword was terrible then.
Now the sword is the most deadly in your face weapon available, as it should be.
Try using a pistol or blunderbuss to weaken those sword slashers before they get close, then hit them with your own sword.
Do you know if you press the jump button while blocking and holding back, you do a quick jump backwards? Try this.

It's not hard to understand at all - you're just simply wrong.
The sword has a wide-cut, yes, but it's not a full 360° - that'slike saying if I look and cut to my right, my opponent from the left also gets hit, and that's just not the case. You can't cut someone who is behind you, for example. If anything, it's more like 90° in either direction, if 0° was directly in front of you, and it's probably slightly less than that. The interesting thing about the sword is that you can make the swing seem larger than it really is by turning as you make the attack, but you actually aren't - you're just shifting the angle of the attack. I think this is where you become confused. If I'm surrounded by 4 pirates, I can spin in place performing a 3-hit combo against my opponents - it may look like a 360° attack, but it's actually 3 separate attacks at 3 separate angles.

@sherpa725 I've been playing nearly every day since the closed alpha and have performed numerous tests with the sword, including with its reach. This isn't a you vs. Me argument. What I have stated is not speculative; it's a fact - you can deny it all you want, but that won't change.
The test is simple. Stand directly behind an ally and ask him to swing his sword without turning. I know without a shadow of a doubt that he won't hit you. If he does, feel free to record a clip of it as proof to show me.

@sherpa725 He appears to be standing at a slight angle - his shoulders aren't squared off to your point of view as he swings. Also, I have NEVER seen the sword swing back that far with its animation - it looks a bit off to me, perspective-wise (kind of like looking through a fish-eye lense). I'll run my own tests to be sure, though. At the very least, you've got my attention.
If anyone else wants to run the same, or similar tests, and share the results - be my guest.
For now, though, don't stand so close to your opponent! 😉
