r5 3600 + 5600 XT crashing on anything but lowest settings

  • What the heck is going on with this game and the 5600 Xt?! I've tried every driver that's come out (using DDU to help with wiping driver cache) and cant get it to load with anything but the lowest water and lighting settings (runs at almost 200 fps this way, but its no optimal). I can run Valheim and Warzone highest settings near 100 FPS on this new build@ 1080p, but no luck with sea of theives. All the other threads I have read about this issue been locked and I can't reply to find out if the users resolved their problem. Any tips out there?!

  • Also, it should be noted, I had an extra GTX 1060 laying around and it runs in the same machine without issue. Its specifically the 5600 XT on any driver that's been out since the card launched.

  • @eightbitspartan Another user with a similar setup reported that Windows 10 20H2 was the culprit; you may have to rollback to 1903.

Going to try this and see what happens. I tried running the game on a fresh Windows 10 Pro install before updates, though its possible that ISO had this update already. Will let you know shortly.

I uninstalled the update, but have no way to return windows to version 1903 since this is a fresh install and Microsoft no longer supports 1903. This leads me to believe there is no rollback option. Even after the uninstall - then the reinstallation of Sea of Thieve, I am still having the same issues.

  • So is there any solution to this issue outside of a rollback? Seems pretty game breaking at this point.

  • @eightbitspartan Try uninstalling Radeon drivers and running Microsoft drivers. But I would try limiting frames to 60 FPS first and see if its overheating issue.

  • @jadescissors32 not an overheating issue at all. Ran HWinfo64 to track temps and running well below safe temperatures. I just ran a warzone match on max settings, rending in 2k 75FPS locked no issues. This is 100% a sea of theives issue.

Also attempted to run with uninstalled Radeon Drivers and it states "your graphics card does not support shader model 5" and crashes on boot. Attempted app data wipe and ensuring the correct VGA driver was installed.

  • @eightbitspartan I am not familiar with AMD architecture, but try finding current OpenGL and display adapter drivers if you are not able to revert back to a previous version of Windows. People are reporting Vsync issues with AMD/20H2 setups; so try toggling Vsync in the game client and see if helps your issue.

Tried every driver set so far. Also tried Vsync being completely disabled at the driver level, not just in-game and using the Radeon client. There is absolutely no fix for this issue and it seems like the people who posted about it have either resigned themselves to playing a blurry mess or stopped playing altogether.

  • Attempted underclocking the GPU and all the different firewall settings. Also, now playing on lowest settings is still crashing the game. Can someone from Rare support please advise?

  • @eightbitspartan Have you tried resetting Radeon settings and game profile?
There is full reset on the same page as the Driver updates.
Also my Radeon app reported there is another update so that may help.

I have tried completely resetting all global and game-specific settings in the Radeon menu. Also performed a DDU wipe of the old drivers before updating to the new ones yesterday. Once updated, the game ran for about 30 minutes on low then crashed again. Nothings working.

  • @eightbitspartan The only thing I would sugest is to try to borrow another RX card from somebody and test if does the same. It does not have to be another RX 5600 but any RXxxxx
what mobo is in it ?

Mobo is an MSI B450M Bazooka Max Wifi. A very good and well-supported motherboard for a budget machine. No other RX cards available. This was a budget build for my sister and my son and I both use 3070's. I obtained the 5600 xt and GTX 1060 in an unopened boxes via trade for a 3060 (got it for $479 at microcenter). Was able to flip the 1060 for $300 leaving her only out of pocket $179 for the 5600 xt. Thought this was a great way to maximize her budget as she couldnt spend the extra $300 on a 3k series card.

  • @eightbitspartan Ok so you have more than one PC ? Correct ? Do you want to try running that 5600 in another computer and see if it does the same thing ?

No issues with that card running in the other configs, but they have a 5600x and 3900x and on x570 mobos.

  • @eightbitspartan So this is interesting, I have RX xxxx they running on x570 mobos (ASUS / Gigabyte) with Ryzen 3rd gen chips in them. All running with latest Radeon drivers and so far no problems.
Whats interesting B450 does not support Gen4 PCIe which is what those Rxxxx use That means it your5600 has to downgrade to run. Do You want try putting that card in PCIE 3 slot on x570 and see if it does the same thing ? Also I would try different memory on that B450. Or try only one memory DIMM. It could be bad memory and when game reaches that all kind of crazy things happen.

Again, I have no issues running any other game on this system - including other gamepass games. Im getting better numbers on this rig than other similar builds because the GPU and CPU are binned really well. Even though this test hates AMD builds, UserBench is showing each part well above average performance. Ive tried the recent Radeon and B450 chipset updates. Nothing fixes this issue. This is 100% a sea of theives specific issue.

  • @eightbitspartan Possible but I have multiple AMD machines and none have a problem. However, none have B450 chip set because it does not support Gen4 PCIe.
It could be SoT but it would be strange that it only happens on b450

  • @jadescissors32 5600xt's aren't exclusively gen 4. Heck no consumer card is gen 4.0 only, this is why intel has yet to fully adopt 4.0. Even my newer RTX 3070 had no issues running in this same machine. The card came out before b550 was released so the only budget boards that were available were B450 anyway. I just don't get it at all - 0 compatibility issues with dozens of other more high end games and yet sea of thieves can't run.

  • New SoT updates, New windows install, and updated Radeon drivers have still yet to resolve this issue. Continue to play any other game with the machine and have 0 problems. Would like engagement on trying to figure this problem out, but crickets.

  • @eightbitspartan You may want to download any free, modern Unreal Engine 4 game and see if you can successfully run that application with no errors. If you are still getting poor performance you may want to try Process Lasso to monitor your architecture. Unreal Engine games benefit from hyper threading/SMT, whereas games on Unity benefit from single cores. Compare your CPU affinity in games that work well against Sea of Thieves to see if there are any apparent differences on execution. You can also assign a priority level in this application to ensure proper power distribution.

  • @bizi-betiko No issues with Fortnite at max settings. Unreal doesn't seem to be the issue either.

  • Any update? A friend of mine is having his exact same issue..
