Discussion about hit registration in the servers!

  • This problem is well known among the Sea of Thieves community. That's when every time you shoot an enemy (player or entity) there is a big chance that you are going to get the hit mark for dealing damage to this object or enemy but the server doesn't record it.

That's probably server issue in the main part. That's why we have seen that the ship server cap was lowered. That maybe helped, because a server is mainly CPU and RAM and having to think for one less ship is helpful, but that's something that isn't good for the game experience for the players. Also, right now, the server ship cap i think can be increased and also the server performance, but that's not going to happen because of the support of Xbox One. If the server performance is increased and also the ship cap, Xbox One can't handle all the things that might happen in one big ship fight and the experience of this players is going to be really bad. Also Rare can't just say that they aren't going to support this console for future updates because this is going to kill the game for this console.

If that's the problem and increasing the server performance is going to help with the hit registration and with added bonus of additdaional ships, with the downside of not allowing Xbox One players to play i would suggest that:

    • Adding a button for PC players and Xbox Series S/X to be able to play in better servers without Xbox One players. (There shoud be a warning that it requires good hardware for PC players for example)
    • I know that will increase the cost of the Sea of Thieves servers but also it's not going to be that much because that way they can merge two servers into one. Only Rere can know how much is going to bring the cost up, because we don't know how much the current cost.
    • If this is going to be a third banner for Big Adventure (with better servers) along with the two existing ones Adventure (with Xbox One players and the normal ship cap) and Arena or an option in the setting menu (like how xbox players can choose to play with xbox players only) , i am going to leave that to the community and Rare.

In conclusion i think this is going to help with a lot of issues like the hit registration and the ship cap in the servers but there is going to be an option for people who dont want a lot of PvP and want something more chill to choose to play on the smaller servers (the Adventure servers right now) with Xbox One players (if Rare adds the third banner for big servers). The better servers are going to be more PvP focused and a lot of players that like PvP will go there and will fix also the issue with the PvE servers. The players that want PvE servers are going to get PvP servers with less PvP hungry pirates, but that dosen't mean that the ship next to them is not going to try stealing the loot out of them.

  • I strongly agree. That way everybody will have the "...and they lived happily ever after" ending.

  • Excluding XBox One isn't going to fix hit registration, because the server doesn't care which platforms are connected.

  • @d3adst1ck

Partly true, Xbox One is the reason why Rare can't push bigger updates or have more detail on things.
Example is the Wailing Barnacle Sniper, it had a brown strap on it before but they had to remove it because it had to many polygons on it.

  • @itz-majman That's an entirely client side reason. The server doesn't render models at all.

  • @d3adst1ck

It is client sided yes, the Xbox One is weak and can't handle Sea of Thieves anymore in a good way so Rare is hindered by it to push better updates.

The servers has some issues as well but that's an other topic.

  • @itz-majman Yeah, but this thread is about excluding the XBox One from some servers as some kind of magical fix to hit registration which is pure fiction so this is the topic.

Hit registration has nothing to do with what platform you are on; it's all internet latency, server simulation calculations and server performance/optimization.

  • @d3adst1ck

The servers themselfs are the issue for the hitreg, if they had the ability to push better servers i don't thnk the Xbox One would be able to handle it hence why they haven't done it yet.

I might be wrong on that but i don't see any other reason since we have been dealing with bad hitreg for 2.5 years now.

  • While an interesting thought, it wont help hitreg. I think rare just needs some better servers.

  • @turkaspy Yea thats what i mean by bigger servers i will change bigger with better up there! If the servers are 2 times better for example and you increase the ship limit 1.8 times just for example and leave the 0.2 left of the performance that handles ships before to go to hit reg that will be realy bennifical and most of the time there is not going to be that big battles or only one ship is going to fight a meg so that will benefit the hit reg even more. Also i am not saying to get rid of Xbox One, i am suggesting better servers for PC and Xbox Series S/X with added benefit of more ships because of the bigger performance.

  • @d3adst1ck Of course the server doesn't render anything! The Problem is that the server reaction is too slow and if you get a better one its going to fix the issue BUT its not sufficient to play 2 times more for example just fix this issue and leave all the additional performance because if you add more things or more ships the Xbox One can't handle them. But for me it seams that its server issue mainly. Also i am not saying to get rid of Xbox One, i am suggesting better servers for PC and Xbox Series S/X with added benefit of more ships because of the bigger performance. And for the Xbox One and other players from PC and Xbox Series S/X who wants more chill server with less ships they can still use the current ones.

  • As fun as it is to read the same arguments and the same speculation from the community, it'd be super cool if the devs could chime in, with more than a recycled statement in the release notes. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

  • @theblackbellamy Yep its going to be realy useful if they say the issue is this and we are trying to fix it that way. Is it a realy badly made code stuck in the mane game code or a server performance issue. We know that the problem is not in the main engine (Unreal engine) that they use because its used for other pvp shooters and it is working realy well. That means that the phisics engine is working fine soo the client should too. I just wanted to sugest that idea if the issue is the server performance and the how i think will be good to proceed in the future with Xbox One.
