Just had this occur twice in a row while sailing through the Devil's Roar. Got hit by an erupting volcano and died instantly from full health with boat sunk or sinking beyond repair before being able to respawn. Obviously there's danger involved in traveling the Devil's Roar, but being essentially "one shot" by the environment just doesn't feel good. I'd suggest having volcanic rock hits do something like 80-90% health damage at most so it can be possible to recover with quick food and water.

@the-quasars I have five tips. DR takes extra precautions. People like to say, “It does not take skill. It is just random.” But this is just wrong. The boulders are random, but getting taken out by one is the result of previous decisions made while you were there.
First, when you see a volcano erupting, stay outside the radius of danger.
Second, if you have to pass through the radius, STAY BELOW DECK AS YOU SAIL BY to avoid getting crushed by a flaming boulder. Don’t just clutch the helm and hope for the best. Stay safe until you are outside danger.
Third, when you are at an island, as soon as you hear the ground start to rumble, run to your ship. Keep it parked pointed away from the island towards open waters with the sails up and the anchor raised. That way, if erupts, you drop the sails and hide below deck until you are safe. Yes, the rumble will push the boat out a little, but a sword lunge and a little swim will put you at your ladder.
Next, if your boat is struck and immobilized, just stay below deck and repair until the eruption ends. You won’t sink if you put out fires below deck and repair any holes that appear. You did stock up on planks before heading to DR, didn’t you?
Finally, take a rowboat with you when you head to DR in case your ship does get sunk. You can grab your loot and use your second chance to get to safety.
DR is riskier, so you cannot approach it like the other zones. It takes extra planning and if you ignore the rumbling ground then you are asking for trouble. In return for this extra care you will be rewarded with higher payouts and rep. The zone has been nerfed to death already. If you are still having trouble with it, or you simply don’t want to take the extra precautions, then just don’t go there. Many of us really like the zone and don’t want to see it diminished any further.
@the-quasars In addition to the amazing and incredibly accurate and helpful advice @Ghostpaw has already given you, once you see smoke coming out of a volcano, you have ~30 seconds before it explodes - if you're not already moving, that's your time to book it! If you see little embers falling from the sky behind your boat, the volcano can still hit you, so sail until there are none. Also, it never hurts to look up to the sky and then divert course if you see debris coming your way. You even have about 10 seconds to avoid those. Make the best of it with your sloop's manueverability! 😉

stay away from active volcanoes eye roll.... then ya know, you dont have to complain on the forums for an easier game.
