Plunder pass

  • The plunder pass follows the formula of a generic battle pass. The idea typically leads to the downfall of a game.

My reasoning stands clear. A great example of a game losing a large chunk of players over battle passes is dead by daylight a great game i played for a while but eventually i ended up leaving the game shortly after they added there battle pass. Another example of a game losing players and money is apex legends. The game got alot of hype when the first few trailers released and it had little criticism wich is surprising as it was managed by the widely criticized company EA. In the first couple of weeks according to twitch statistics, The view count of people playing apex legends was about 200,000 viewers. After season one released to now that viewer count less than a fourth of the early games days.

I will also like to explain my viewpoint. Adding larger challenges and more content isnt always the best way of getting new players or more money. If someone asked me if sea of thieves is a good game i would say its extremely buggy and it can send you to the void if you use a rowboat sometimes. I enjoy the game alot but adding more content shouldn't be your first priority as the game is probably the most buggy game i have on my xbox and pc. After you fix some of the server lag and bugs then you should focus on the new merchant quests and maby a battle pass way in the future but right now we just need to enjoy the good vibes of the waves without glitching to the bottom of the ocean.

TLDR: sea of theives will kill themself with a battle pass and they rare should focus on fixing the server lag and bugs.

  • @doomscorp Ahoy matey!

This got announced to the public today :)

  • Yeh i know just checked u tube soz

  • Some battle passes help the game grow and others kill the game. Usually the games that dont make u pay for the pass and just reward u for playing are good

  • @doomscorp the OP isn't even an insider lol I'm super hype to see how the pass effects the game tho, so much hate went tword anyone who suggested the idea in the past guess we will see how warrented that was now ❤️

  • So im willing to except tha battle pass if rares willing to except deleting it if it doesnt work out

I don't see this ship turning around. They probably held out as long as they thought they could and I and others praised them for it

I don't think it'll kill the game but some of us will probably move on and that's alright nothing lasts forever. New players will find the game and have a good run too

Not a fan of it going in but I'll certainly give it a chance for a while

  • @doomscorp starting to sound like me in regards to Arena lol!

Yet the stated 3% of the game population playing that mode by Joe Neate totally destroys your notion that it "divides the community", your main reason for wanting it removed.

  • I dont see this being bad or good.
Destiny, CoD, Fortnite, all have Passes of some kind and tend to do very well...BUT you are still able to play without buying it.

  • @dlchief58 That's fantastic they actually released the percentage of players split from playing adventure. Thanks for backing my argument ❤️

  • So pay to win now?

  • @pithyrumble Ahoy matey!

There is no pay to win here!

Unlike most Seasons in other games, the main seasonal rewards are all free and unlocked through play, but there’s an optional ‘premium’ tier unlocked with the Plunder Pass that allows you to play and unlock existing items from Emporium for a discount, alongside a few exclusives

  • If people wanna get a “Battle Pass” for whatever reason who cares. Let them!

This game don’t have Levels or Stats or Gear or whatever so you can’t pay to win if you tried!

My question is will Battle Pass be included with XBOX Game Pass?

That would be sweet. I mean what’s it do anyway? Give you an exclusive cosmetic once a month?

Hell if “Plunder Pass” let’s me by Cannon Balls at the dock sign me up!

It's 3% of playtime not population; actually it's even less than 3%.

I don't know if they include the time spend in the tavern though - could double that number 😉.

For those of you who might still be confused, the Plunder Pass is going to function identically to the Hunt Pass from the monster hunting game "Dauntless."

There's going to be a free tier to the season pass, that's automatically unlocked for everyone, and there's going to be a premium, purchasable tier that offers extra rewards.

I don't agree with the addition of a season pass to Sea of Thieves, either; personally I feel they've been done to death and are saturating the market, and additionally Sea of Thieves already has a bad rep for the notorious grind to Pirate Legend (which no longer exists, but nevertheless); we don't need more carrots that require a lot of grinding to achieve.

  • My only real gripe is that the majority of games that have a season pass like this are free-to-play games. That's how they justify its existence. I know SOT is on Game Pass, and that's good value, but it's still not F2P. Unless they make the game F2P, this is going to look to a lot of people like double dipping, regardless if there's a free tier to it or not.

I wonder if gamepass will have perks related to it maybe a discount or something. Seems like something that would be possible and line up with the current perk system (which has already had SOT stuff as a perk)

  • @wolfmanbush
Perhaps. But my concern is the "perks" will only really be bait to get players to spend even more money in the Emporium, rather than rewards in and of themselves

  • I’m guessing the game is going F2P which is awesome, more ships on the Seas but yeah. Us XBOX Game Pass subscribers should totally get the Battle Pass thingy...

    That would be awesome

  • @glannigan I think that would be up to Microsoft, they might do it for Gamepass Premium but I doubt they'll do it on a standard GP sub.

Rumour is too SOT devs release so much emporium stuff each update cos funding is drying up unsure how true this is, But that would also mean they are not earning what Microsoft want so if the above is true. Microsoft isn't going to cut a deal at all until some kind of profit is made from their investments during the development stages (staff costs, assets, etc, etc) my bets are Rare owe Microsoft way over 200k by now if they aren't making much and just about covering staff costs and utilities.

Old devs don't stay silent 😶 a few don't have nice things to say.

The game was sea of tiktacs until Microsoft fronted the money for better assets, shader and all that jazz.

  • I have seen more backlash than positive feedback on the PlunderPass.
And they clearly didnt listen to their insider either and still they dare to say at the end of the video: "it's you players who made SoT of what it is today"......
And when they come up with a bad idea....yea boom

  • i think rare's income is low now they haven't made any new games that i am aware of

people who want sea of thieves has probrably already bought sea of thieves

now there might be days where they don't earn a penny or there might be days where they earn just a little bit

what i am 100% certain of is that this plunderpass was not added out of greed

  • I feel like SOT’s is the Only reason Game Pass is/was successful.

Similar to the only reason STEAM was successful is because it was attached to Counter Strike.

People don’t realize that before STEAM was a store it was a requirement to play Counter Striker after like version 1.2 or 1.3 (so like 3 million people were forced to install it on their PC’s).

And not to sound old but back then that was a huge amount of people!

Only reason I got and maintain Game Pass is/was SOT’s

  • Hey if it's not a pay-to-win pass and doesn't affect game mechanics or gives an advantage to some players, I'm okay with that.

  • @burnbacon Indeed, but these all have in common that they are free to play titles. We got a €40 triple A rated game that already has the pirate emporium as a way of doing ingame purchases. Now, at first i was ok with the emporium. However, as updates have gone on, new cosmetics are almost exclusively comming to emporium, which is already starting to look pretty greedy. Then they also add a season structure with battle pass, which i find odd seen as this is something more befitting to free to play games than a freaking €4o AAA game. Now im unsure how they will shape this battle pass but all i know is i am entirely against it. The argument most people used for the emporium was that it was a way for rare to get extra income and that it was entirely optional. However, as things progressed it has gone to the main focus, while Joe even announced that the community is still growing. So if they just left it as was and also introduced some cosmetics for people who just paid for the game rather than paying for stuff in a paid game i would be fine, but this is just getting worse. EA (a prime example of a greedy games publisher) did simmilar things and look how they are currently regarded. Honestly, i think this just needs to stop and rare should first balance the paid - unpaid balance of cosmetics before even thinking of asking more money.

  • @jollyolsteamed not true. As Joe said in the last SoT news, the community of players is still growing bigger every year. They got over a million NEW players in the first month of steam release. And there are still a lot of new players every single day, so, just check those things before you give your oppinion please. Not meant to bash you btw, i just get a bit annoyed of people trying to back such arguments with ungrounded claims.

  • I'm not a fan of passes, but I will be supporting this 1, in full. 💸

Once many of you sea what's to come, I think you might take the plunge too. 😊

how long ago was it released to steam?

    time passes numbers change

something joe said months ago is already a shaky arguement

my arguement is far from ungrounded

content the developers make costs alot of money

take payday 2 a very popular heist game that kicked off reaally well it was one of the most played steam games when it came out but time passes the company went bankrupt

things changes as time passes is my point

    same with player numbers

and i feel like you ignore the meaning of my comment by calling it ungrounded because it is not

content developers make will earn money to support either the game or repay funding given by publishers aswell as paying for the costs of making content and paying the developers

even if joe said they recieved X amount of players and earned Y amount of money

doesn't mean you know where majority of where that money goes to

not bashing you either now but claiming i have ungrounded claims like that is a very steep decision do refrain from telling people that unless you are 100% sure what someone says is boogus

in short even if they earned alot of money initially you forget this game is a product meant for our enjoyment and meant for their paychecks

a company who does not look for ways to improve their economy is a company doomed to die out thats just fact

this plunder pass is simply a way to increase earnings to pay salaries and keep content coming and pay microsoft their slice aswell as repaying funding given by microsoft

publishers will do well to pull the plug on a game that isn't doing well even if the game is popular and has alot of players it won't matter if nobody is buying anything anymore

online games cost money to maintain and if the game ends up being a money sink hole with no returns it dies out

plunder pass = increased longevity of the game

and possibly this is a way to fund their upcoming game everwild was it?

so saying that my arguement is ungrounded then let me ask: how long will they earn money from sea of thieves without further adding things to be purchasable with money

seeing it as it is right now 95 million people use steam actively every month (by checking their recent user report) and joe said they gained a million new players from steam alone thats a great launch off i mean a hefty 39.990.000¤ (28.000.000¤ actually forgot valve takes 30%) during a month thats an okay amount to earn for a company it covers the costs of making sea of thieves and covers the costs for a few months worth of content but 1 million out of 95 million users

that is 0.95% of steam's userbase meaning 94 million people have no intention of buying sea of thieves or hasn't heard of sea of thieves so lets take an ponder at this and think about it at a theory level

lets say 4 people buy sea of thieves everyday for a month
    now thats 1199¤ a month

and the most recent data on how many employees rare has is around 150 people

how would you pay 150 people their salaries with 1199¤ and still continue making content and new games? (purely at refrence)

now that you know my full reasoning for my comment do you still think my arguement is ungrounded?

  • @expsnailer said in Plunder pass:

Wow, you really are deluded if you think that that in ANY way backs up your argument when in actuality totally debunks it....anyone with a lick of sense and basic math skills can see that. Furthermore as pointed out, it isn't 3% of the population but 3% of the PLAYTIME meaning the split you complain about is even less than that...making the "divide" negligible for all intents and purposes.

  • @dlchief58 that's 3% of playtime not spent in adventure anyhow if your trying to debunk my argument to remove arena this actually helps it. The developers are even seeing that it's a bad edition even to the extent of cutting any updates for it. ❤️

I've already debunked your delusional theory (well Rare actually, I just brought it to your attention) so no need to keep beating that dead horse. Your whole premise that it was detrimental to Adventure by drawing away players, thus should be removed. We now know that is NOT the case, so now you shift the goalposts just so you can say you were right (when you clearly were not). Keep living in your delusions, as we have repeatedly said (and now proven) - Arena had absolutely no effective split of the player base from adventure....PERIOD.

You could be a man and admit you were mistaken, somehow I doubt you have the humility to do so. Or you can continue to make a fool of yourself - your choice. Either way my work is done here.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.....
