I've been rocking solo or playing with irl friends.
Should I get used to playing open crew? What's that like or is it a crapshoot/toxic?
@idneon I wouldn’t recommend it unless you just want to mess around. Chances are one player in your crew will toss firebombs all over the deck, drop your anchor, toss your loot overboard, and do everything they can to sabotage your ship. You’d have better luck using the SoT Discord if you want to find new players to crew up with.
No, open crew is full of either people who are brand new, or trolls.
If you are looking for likeminded people to play with that won't firebomb your own ship, join the official Sea of Thieves discord. It has over 160,000 players, and there are constantly people asking for someone to join their crew. It is very easy to have certain requirements too, if you wanted to do an Gold Hoarders voyage then you can specify that by saying something like:
Looking for 1 person to duo sloop and get a level 5 gold hoarder emissary, be somewhat experienced,"
Or something like that. Either way the Sea of Thieves discord is the best way to find people who want to do adventure or arena, and they won't be like your open crew teammates and kill you with blunderbombs or drop your anchor randomly. There's also a specific, "New swabbie LFC section for new players. Ask for someone to play with in that text chat and there will be people who are pretty experienced that show new players the ropes, or at the very least if you are worried about not being good enough and not pulling your own weight, you can play with other people who feel the same way.

As stated above, unless you just want to mess around, it’s not advised. Not only will you run into teammates who will grief you, but even if you do manage to find a decent open crew, all it takes is for 1 guy to leave and it’s opened back up to potential griefers. Imagine being 75% done with a mission and 1 guy leaves. Who knows what type of player will join.
Stick to LFGs.
Open crews is fine, take about the first 10 mins to establish a communication line of some sort with your crew. Else, move on if they cannot even state Aye, No! with a chat wheel it really isn't worth sticking around.
Do not advise going into Galleons though, brigs and sloops are alright.
Most crews are actually pretty decent, those that avoid it at all costs don't really get a feel for it. Not saying that you don't occasionally meet the troll, but usually that becomes clear in the first 10 mins.

Interesting contrary opinion.
How often does open crew get players?
@KaiJoi
Also....how do you mic with them? Is it automatic in crews (crew chat?)
In discord how do you link up to invite? Still have to add their gamer tag?
@dyfrin said in Should I play open crew?:
I don't open crew much anymore, I utilize the LFG to find new players and play with.. or someone with same goal.. that doesn't have an offensive username, or absurd descriptions.
LFG = LFC typo?
Looks like you just join a "tay for bae" discord channel and see who shows up to the channel?
Then add gamer tag and invite to crew in game?
And turn push to talk on in game settings so no double talk?
The crews automatically fill up. I tend to play open crew brigs or solo.
I wouldn't pretend it is perfect, but if you have a bit of patience at the start and feel out the crew, talk to them... you usually find out quick enough if it will be cool or not.
@cotu42 glad to hear.
I guess if I want to make sure I'm first on ship I start closed then vote to open?
@idneon that right.
Majority of the time its not too bad.
Shame more dont use open crew rather than split off to a 3rd party app like discord. The more that use open crew the better it would be.

Yet that is irrelevant for an open crew, your ship is not yours it is the crews. Just join a party, if they are on their way tag along, talk, investigate the storage. If you spawn at the outpost start stocking up, observe what the others do and again talk.
The only reason to start closed is to try and get better ping servers if you are logging on late or early times.

Can you explain better how you get better servers?
I figured if I were already underway and at the helm then when open crew members start coming aboard they'll fill other roles 😈
The discord has specific voice channels that you can go in to talk to other players. You can use in game chat if you would like, but that's mainly why people use discord, so that they can talk to each other without talking in game. And yes, you do have to add each other through the Xbox console companion App. (It should already be installed) So you just give them your xbox name and they add you, and then you join their game.

When you search in closed crew the game will try to put you into the best possible servers for ping. If you join someone else's crew then you may not have the best ping. For example, if someone in Europe starts the crew, then someone from America joins them, everyone on that crew will be playing in a European server, and the american will have high ping. Then take that example and put it to Closed crew and Open crew. If you start the crew then you will have low ping, and anyone else who joins will probably have higher ping because the server isn't EXACTLY right for them.
@KaiJoi explained the server situation.
Now in a crew you have roles, but nothing is set or determined. It is far more important to have a joint goal as a crew that you work together to achieve. You can agree on roles if you want, but don't think that because someone touches the helm for a minute that they are bound to that role.
The best crews are those that can adapt and react to the situation at hand. Don't worry though if you like the helm not many people will protest 😋
Thanks guys.
Yup went looking for crew edited and was best game experience like...ever
Lol
500,000 gold. Held reaper 5 90% of the time
Even went fotd while reaper 5 to see if we could pull it off.
Ended up getting sunk..making it back and taking back our loot from the campers.
I cheered up the crew saying:
"It is ok. Now they know we go for Fotd x 2.5 and we still took a 1.
@idneon
The xbox lfg .. in windows its gamebar, it shows others looking for a crew in sea of thieves.. but it's group elsewhere.
