Xbox Perfomance Issues

  • Ok first off let me say that I love this game...when it actually works.

The game is a terrible experience on the Xbox One as well as on the Xbox One X.
Constant micro freezes, stuttering, texture pop ups, loading screens that are almost 2mins long, etc.
I can understand some of these issues on the regular Xbox One but the Xbox One X is so much stronger that these issues shouldnt be as prevalent as they currently are.
Im not sure if anyone on the dev team actually plays on the Xbox One to experience these issues themselves but holy ***, its really terrible.
I feel like Rare needs to acknowledge these issues and try to fix it. It has gotten arguably worse since the Anniversary Update. I dont know if they changed something about how texures load in but everytime I pass an island I get a 1sec freeze until the textures load in. On the Xbox One X....
Same whenever I start the game, or check resource barrels, the textures/images take simply too long to load in.

Its been a year and theres still no "perfomance mode" for the One X, I dont want to play it in 4k when it runs this bad. Give me 1080p with 60 or even 30fps with better load times, no freezes or texture pop-ins etc.

Please even if youre a PC player dont ignore this thread.
I doubt that the majority of the Xbox players are the kind of people to frequent forums.
We all love this game, but the Xbox versions really need some optimizing/love.

These issues happen daily, they are not something rare (pun unintended).
Here are some clips highlighting the issues:

I know that an SSD would help with the loading times, but quite frankly I cant afford myself an SSD atm, Im a student and all my money goes into living and such. If the game came with a warning stating that you need an SSD for a good gaming experience, I wouldnt have bought it in the first place (yes I bought it).
I saved my money and bought the One X because of the promise of better perfoming games, I shouldnt have to also buy an SSD just because Rare doesnt care enough about console players to implement some sort of graphic/perfomance settings.
I dont even have a 4k TV. I play on a regular 1080p monitor, why am I forced to endure 4k graphics with bad perfomance gameplay?

That being said I also believe that they could implement a "low graphics" setting on the regular Xbox One (besides the Xbox One X) for people who prefer fluid gameplay. The issues are more than just the loading speed.

PC even got a newly added "Resolution Scaling" option, but where are the settings for the Xbox players who are in need of optimization?

Resolution Scaling – A new video option has been added for PC players. This will dictate what percentage of your current resolution that the game will render at. E.g. if a player sets this to 200% and their current resolution is 1920x1080, then the game will render at 3840x2160 (4K). Settings higher than 100% will negatively affect performance but will improve graphical quality. Settings lower than 100% may improve performance but lessen graphical quality."

Please Rare, put out a QoL patch for the console versions of this game!

For the record, I'm an XBox player. With ~70% of the community on XBox, and ~30% on PC, it would be very surprising if none of the XBoxers actually visited the forums.
This game has long had issues like these, however most of them are not specific to platform, but to the actual machine. I, on a normal XBox one, don't have the issues of constant micro freezes or stuttering. These do happen, however, if you are playing on a server very far away, which would happen if you consistently joined another player rather than always starting the ship.

Barrels, compasses, store/inventory items, islands, and characters not loading
These are not platform specific. This is an issue with your internet and Rare's internets combining their flaws into one monster that absorbs menus. Ok, maybe not exactly like that, but that's the basic gist of it.
    Long loading screens
This is the game not handling the various ships and AIs nearby well enough, seen particularly in situations such as Tribute Peak, multi-ship stronghold battles, skeleton fleets, server-wide battles, and other, similarly taxing things. These cause the game to load you in before everything is loaded, or to load for longer. As for the infinite black screen when battling skeleton ships, it persists until the ship sinks or you are teleported by dying or being put in the brig. Being put in the brig also causes you to not have items or a resource limit, until you die.

  • Not sure if it is across platforms or not but the performance is pretty bad on Xbox after this last update.

  • @ultmateragnarok
Im not going to go in depth on what you said, but youre wrong.
My super old and bad PC can handle texture pop ups and loading times better when playing on the lowest settings. My friend who was playing on a high end PC and switched to Xbox recently and started having the same issues. We both use the same internet connection on Xbox and PC and yet the issues are mostly on the Xbox.

    Its not internet connection specific.

  • @chonky-lemon In all honesty, the performance issues are there on PC too.

Imho, i want Rare to go on a bug extermination crusade to get the game stable... because clearly, the game is very unstable. xD

I recently got an FPS bump in constant performance, i gained 20 fps... But now i get random stutters in high action situations, like the game freezes for a split second at random intervals, but otherwise runs at near perfect FPS. : /

  • We've had this discussion before, so I won't repeat everything I said about the limitations of the hardware configuration in the console and how it's a big hurdle to get over.

But, I will say, I think you just need a bit of patience. The introduction of the resolution scaling option on PC in this last update is promising. It can scale down as well as up, so people with really low spec PCs can scale the resolution lower than their native output for better performance.

I think they're just trying to optimise things in the game at the moment and you will see a performance mode patch at some point for Xbox One X.

I'm fairly confident in that prediction.

  • @chonky-lemon You're right that it's not entirely internet related. I think that issues with long spawn times are partially due to network bugs or poor connection to the server though. When it takes longer than normal, it seems like the game client is ready to load (you can hear sounds from your spawn location in the background) but the server either loses track of what it's supposed to be feeding you to release you from the black screen or the message keeps getting lost in transit.

The issues with the barrels not loading and other things like that are probably a combination of memory and HDD loading. Basically any action that has to load textures from the drive into memory can take way too long. On consoles, you'll run into these issues more often because they have less memory available so they have to stream new textures in from the drive which is by default a 5400rpm drive.

Most old computers that were meant to play games will have at least 8 GB of memory and a 7200rpm drive unless its a Walmart/prebuilt special that cheaped out. I believe the SOT executable is 32bit (can't check right now) so it should be able to hold up to 2GB in memory until it has to start paging to the drive as well.

I mean even on the "Set Sail" screen it will take a few minutes to load the high quality player textures in on PC. Inability or slow loading of textures for players, items and other things happens on all platforms but due to memory constraints it will happen much more often on a console.

Improving performance will help everybody. It should be a priority; particularly getting rid of the long loading times when spawning back to your ship or loading between game and tavern in Arena (which is kind of killing that mode).

  • @chonky-lemon Don't worry. Been like this since release. Horrible performance sadly. They won't fix it, given their current rep when it comes to updates. That being only adding more content for the bugs to infest.

  • Its funny, coz when Rares own dev video described 'no asterisk crossplay' , they said it was about features being developed side by side on both platforms. Such as fov sliders and hotkeys...
Seems like they forgot about this 'mantra' when it came to the resolution scaling feature. Maybe Xbox will have to wait a year, just like they did for kbm support and text chat...
...still waiting for ping counters and fps counters over here rare...
It should read: No asterisk crossplay*

Back to your post, items in barrels and shops still take time to load, even with an ssd 😑

  • @chonky-lemon

The PC is on the lowest settings, and as such has less to load. Not a truly fair comparison, it can happen on PC as well, if the system has graphics set to be equal or above its limits.

  • My problem now on the xbox one is that when I go to buy something from the clothing shop it tells me that it has a problem loading every single time!! The load-in screen is about 1:00 - 1:40 and it glitches the whole time while in game. I have restarted it plenty of times and I just do not know what to do anymore. I use game pass so I feel like my money is just being wasted. Does anyone know how to fix it or have any suggestions? Thank you!!!

  • Performance is great for me. SSD, though.

  • april 2020 the game still have all this problems on xbox one x. yey... thanks devs.

  • @bayonetta I play on an OG Xbox One and haven’t had issues.

Edit: Just realized how old this thread is. You should make a new thread rather than resurrecting an old one.

  • @Deckhands can we get an anchor?

  • @bayonetta Please don't resurrect old threads, it is against the forum rules. This thread will now be locked.
