Change appearance potion (SoT News Video)

  • Ahoy everyone,

From what we have seen, the next update will bring a new way to change our pirate appearance through the Emporium in change of ancient coins.
It appears to be a complete change from our current character to a new randomized one (using the initial Pirate Randomize Tool)

Instead of that I would like to suggest some control within our choices, perhaps letting us select some characteristics we would like to keep from our current character.

For this to happen, we could have a simple filter in which our current pirate would be divided by (i.e.):

    • Gender
    • Face
    • Body (body type)
    • Tone (skin tone, hair colour, eye colour, etc)
    • Details (Teeth, scars, blind eye, etc)

Then before we use the tool we could select some of those to remain and the rest would be randomized.

Or it would just randomize the things we selected.

    What do you think?

    EDIT

I think the most of the people here didn't understand what I was suggesting.....

I'm not suggesting that we could create our character... not that we would selected what ever from a list..
I don't want everyone to look exactly the same...

What I was suggesting is to choose something from our OG pirate (the one we selected in the beginning when we started to play SoT) to remain the same.
The IPG would work the same as it does.

Some of our characters already have unique characteristics that is very hard to get in the IPG tool, combined with a look that could please us...

I'm only suggesting something that could help us to carry those characteristics over the the new character I would create.

Everything else would be random as well.
Everyone would have is special and unique randomized pirate.

    What's wrong with this??

  • @nunoazuldimeter Ahoy matey!

I do like the idea of having maybe a gender or body size lock-in, but anything past that I am not sure about! I think there has been a very cautious effort to prevent the following from happening!

    alt text

  • @nunoazuldimeter im okay with a gender filter. past that I think it's up to the IPG

  • @musicmee
But it would be randomized as well.
We would only choose a selected part of our current character to remain.

Let's say I do like the skin tone or natural hair colour of my current pirate and would like that to remain the same.
I select "Tone" and every IPG will have that colour scheme, everything else would be randomized.

  • @NunoAzuldimeter

Rather than implementing these features in the IPG, what about unlocking some of them in-game, in a Sea of Thieves way? e.g. with the Fountain of Youth or creating your own potions (after the OoS ladies gave you the recipes of course)? Would definitely prefer that!

The devs already confirmed they aren't going todo this, to much work probably. But at least we are getting a change our pirate option :).

  • I have a funny feeling we gonna see a lot less fat people soon.
And a lot more skinny dudes. I really hope everyone still looks different. I've only ever seen 1 person who looked identical to mine. But not for long. The skinny old dudes gonna be the new jacked young dude/fat dude

  • @musicmee people getting a character that looks like what they want sounds like a real nightmare lol

  • @betsill It does when there's a million and one Jack Sparrows on the sea! I love the variety we have at the moment... don't you?

  • I suspect we are already going to see too many twin crews... let's keep it random

  • @musicmee I don't particularly care what other players looks like. I've played tons of games with character customization and never have I ever seen any of them have a problem with everyone looking the same. Saying that everyone is gonna make a jack sparrow character is obvious nonsense, but even if they did. Why would it matter? There are still cosmetics to change things up. Everyone wearing the same outfit is FAR more likely and far more distracting that everyone have the same face.

  • Too many sudden look alikes. Already plague the idea for only skinny pirates...shivers

Let's hope down the road, next potion for $5 allows us to make a secondary pirate.

  • @burnbacon skinny pirates are objectively better for the game. Fat pirate models are an example of a cosmetic that negatively effects game-play by hiding the players actual hitbox which leads to many "I definitely hit him/her." moments.

  • @betsill

The hitbox is larger than the skinniest pirates and smaller than the largest, but the same for all of them in size. Some say that skinnier pirates are better for sneaking about as a gameplay advantage, but it depends on who you're facing and where - my fat pirate with the jacket of the Wailing Barnacle blends into water better than any skinny pirate does. It's a matter of preference.

  • @ultmateragnarok The hit-box difference is much larger on fat pirates from what I understand but I get your point. If they weren't gonna change the hitbox sizes then they should have made all the characters the same size IMO, but it's obviously to late for that now.

  • @betsill

The model is larger, but the hitbox is the same. Rare confirmed it at some point or another.

  • @ultmateragnarok I'm saying that the difference in character model vs actually hitbox is larger on the fatties. I know the hit box is the same.

  • @betsill

Ah, I understand. That is indeed more variant, the fat pirates are sometimes 2-3 times the size of it while the skinny ones don't even get near that. Aiming for the middle works all the time, though, as long as hit registration puts up with your existence.

  • @ultmateragnarok Plus being smaller than your hitbox isn't really that big an advantage if at all. "Aim small miss small." With the long reloads in SoT a fatty can trick you into thinking you are gonna hit them. A skinny pirate will make you aim better if anything.

  • @betsill

Fair point there. Though a skinny pirate can make you aim worse if you mislead your shots and still hit them normally, making you mislead them against targets without oversized hitboxes.

  • So, let me get this straight - we FINALLY get what everybody has been waiting for, and you're STILL not satisfied?

    Figures... 🙄

  • @galactic-geek lol so true. People who are never satisfied after getting what they want are a problem in society.

Next prediction will be why didn't we get a year 2 athena 10 ship. although id like to see that I'm not gonna complain. And if we get it " IT'S NOT GLOWY ENOUGH" the year 1 ship was better

  • @musicmee I have to say, though, there is a lot of this already. Having multiple pirates, myself, and spending a lot of time choosing the right one, I’ve noticed that the same or extremely similar pirate pops up quite a bit in the IPG. It’s a bit frustrating, actually. But, I do think a gender filter is all that’s needed.

EDIT: I do wish there was a bit more RNG impact on the results.

@NunoAzuldimeter The feature is a re-roll for a different pirate with the existing IPG. I don’t think they’re going to create a separate re-roll version.

I've noticed that cosmetics don't look good on large character sizes so I'll be reducing mine to the smallest character model so cosmetics don't look stretched or clip through model.

  • Like @Musicmee said; Having the ability to lock in sizes on the pirate im all up for but when it comes to details it should stay random or be really careful in how they might give you some slight control over it.

The charm of Sea of Thieves is the randomness, you never see a pirate looking exactly the same as someone else and i love that about the game since it makes each encounter more unique.

  • All existing pirates should be given a free one-time appearance potion for the previous lack of communication regarding the appearance change ability and lack of customization that was available. Simple as that.

  • @fadingtojosh

Rare wants to keep the uniqueness of many pirates out there. Giving them free resets will destroy that with where the game is now, so no. Simple as that.
