I made a SoT compass!

  • I have a laser engraver at work that I quite enjoying mucking about with and have been keen to build things from the SoT universe so here is my first attempt, a compass based on some of the Rare concept art.

It is cut from bamboo ply that I have access to and I am pretty happy with how it turned out (although I might tweak a couple of things in the next version!).

    I hope you enjoy it

    The album:

  • Nicely done, get some glass/acrylic for the centre and itll complete it :)

  • @andyjpanda Wow! This is incredible Andy! Way way cool :)

  • @Aprovoked-Mango I was thinking about putting some acrylic in it for a cover but was running out of ideas to do it in an elegant way :-)

  • @IOnEI-Falcon Thank you!

  • @andyjpanda that's awesome, nice work!!

  • @andyjpanda About how long did it take you to create it?

  • @IOnEI-Falcon I have been thinking about it for a bit so that is hard to measure but when it came to drawing/cutting/assembling, I spent intermittent time over last Saturday. (I have made other models before so am starting to get the hang of them now)

  • That's so cool, put it up for sale on eBay! :P I would get one :D

  • @ItsKhalidd I actually made Destiny ghosts in the past a bunch of Redditors liked them enough to buy them. I am always open to opportunities like that ;-)

  • @andyjpanda great craftsmanship. A keen eye for detail.

  • @andyjpanda That is awesome work mate, truly awesome, I'd be very proud if I were you, and for me, I'd literally, happily pull that out in front of my crew so they get to see it ! Nice job...

  • That looks awesome. It;s gonna be hard to top if you make another one!

  • @Frenzied-Ewoks Thanks! I was actually thinking of something more along this line ;-)

    except much more SoT-ee!

  • @andyjpanda Nice design to the compass. I wish i can make my own, but I am only good at drawing. Would you consider this as the finish product or is there still some minor adjustments you plan on adding/removing to it? I would like to see more done to this work of art. Great work by the way.

  • @andyjpanda Brilliant piece of work!! Love it!

  • Awesome job!

  • @andyjpanda wow, that's awesome.

  • @Spent-D Thanks!

  • @KattTruewalker Thanks Katt!

  • @andyjpanda Nice job, your only missing the Gold parts ;-)

  • Wow, that just looks amazing, love your touch on the details! curious too see if you get too craft anything else!:)

  • @estizzeled Thank you! I am hoping to find some more iconic objects from the SoT universe to have a go at

  • This is amazing, Andy! Mind if we share this for a future #FanArtFriday post on our social channels?

  • @valkyr13x of course not! You would be most welcome :-)

  • @Clumsy-George once you learn the fundamentals, it is actually not too tricky. I used to use Coreldraw but now use a CAD program to draw the designs. Once that is done, the laser engraver is like a printer and I simply print to the laser. I do have to assign a power setting and speed to each line in the drawing (not as difficult as it sounds) and also decide whether I want the laser to cut or do a raster fill.

    Does that all make sense?

  • @andyjpanda absolutely amazing craftsmanship mate! Looks amazing, would love to have one myself!

  • That looks great.

  • @andyjpanda Does It work? Beautiful by the way.

  • One word - Awesome

  • That is AMAZING!

  • @WaldoTehStoner the needle wiggles/rotates in a pleasing way, I toyed with the idea of putting a magnet in it somewhere but when I worked out what that would do I went back to the wiggly needle idea :-)

  • How much for one ?

  • @andyjpanda You used AutoCAD from AutoDesk? I got a student account there... Got all kind of software, which I'm using for 3D printing and design. I'm still on beginner lvl though.
