New Weapon: Grenade Launcher...?

  • So... I was thinking of a weapon that Rare can easily add to SoT while also fitting with the theme and time... And it would be essentially a Grenade Launcher! Though, I should call it by it's proper name which is an Hand Mortar. For people who don't know... Hand Mortars are essentially 17th Century to 18th Century version of a grenade launcher and well it's a proper flintlock weapon, just like with the pistol and sniper that we have in-game right now! Since the other flintlock weapons we do have also were invented in the 17th century, this means lore wise... The Hand Mortar fits the world and would go perfectly with the other weapons, while also adding a new playstyle that is more high risk - high reward... That and I am a Blaster player, and I would love to have a Hand Mortar in this game... I'll be really good at it.

The thing with Hand Mortars is that, unlike current grenade launchers, you have to lit the grenade and plop it in and shoot quickly. The weapon doesn't light the grenade for you. On top of that, in-game, the projectile should be the slowest. So, it would be a rather slow weapon for sure but will hit hard if you directly hit someone. I was thinking of 90% damage if you hit them directly, or 50% if just splash damage. On top of that, I think being able to load firebombs, as well as future throwables into the Hand Mortar, would add some versatile to the weapon, and you can pre-load firebombs without needing to fire right a way (since they don't need to be lit like your normal grenades). This means you could start combat with a loaded firebomb first, then finish the target off with splash damage from a normal grenade...

Oh, and you can blow up your own ships and what not, so be careful (though won't do as much damage as a keg or cannonball obviously).

tl;dr? A lore friendly real life weapon that fits the game and adds a new playstyle for combat.

For those who are curious of what they look like. I recommend Googling more about this weapon if you don't know much about it. They're pretty awesome.

  • I can appreciate someone who does a little research before suggesting something, especially for something like this; when I heard grenade launcher, I was expecting a troll, but you've actually displayed it in a way that I can see it fitting into the game's style.
As for if it would be balanced, That's up in the air. I could see it buffing firebombs, making them do slight hull damage and more knockback when shot from this mortar rather than thrown by hand, but it would need a much longer load time than the other weapons to ensure that nobody's using it in the middle of a heated battle. It would more be for the guy who hangs back, mortars the ship, then pops away to reload. Would give a boarding priority I suppose.
An upvote from me though. I'd love to see what other people think.

love the idea but they would have to make it so I won't be a quick fire weapon

  • A fantasy pirate game with so much primitive firepower available that no one wields a cutlass.

I remember Caleb from AMC's Turn: Washington's Spies used a device like this in one episode. So I could imagine one.
But that show was like a (historically accurate) spy thriller with gadgets, in a Revolutionary War setting.

This sounds kind of OP for SoT.
Imagine having one in a galleons crows nest, with an EoR and an ammo box.

I did point it out that for it's normal ammo, you gotta light the grenade and load it. If you don't shoot right away, it'll blow up in your face. So, with it's normal ammo you can't have it loaded for quick fire.

Base on my experience with balance knowledge from other games (like TF2 and Paladins)... Everything sounds like it'll be OP until properly tested in a live setting, then we figure out it's actual balance. This is mostly because new stuff is always a big change and when we see ideas, like this one, we can't help ourselves BUT thinking about how it could be use and how powerful it could possibly be, without acknowledging other stats.

For example, using a hand mortar from the top of a Galleon nest? That's going to be largely ineffective. Remember, grenades are still gonna be slow projectiles. You aren't using a cannon. Think of how slow you throw the fire bomb? It would be like that, but just with a much better arch. So from a nest? It's gonna take a while to hit your target so you would need to really really outplay your target to hit them, even with splash damage. This weapon will not be good at long range. It'll be more close range to medium range (though not as close as the blunder).

Research is important. I actually did some more researching and even found this: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/xzb5JX which is a hand mortar made specifically for Sea of Thieves, and it looks great. Though, I would replace the mini-cannonball with a proper grenade since the hand mortars I did research on uses actual grenades, not cannonballs. Plus, the weapon can be balanced much better if it uses actual grenades that you can have five of via the ammo box (like any other gun) and yeah... Like I said before, light it, load it, then shoot. No pre-loading for the main ammo.

As for your mention of firebombs... It won't buff the firebomb damage. Just have it shoot at a better arch. The speed of ALL projectiles shot out of this hand mortar is gonna be the same speed that thrown firebombs uses, maybe a bit faster but still pretty slow. Just with a much much better arch so you can shoot it much further than throw it.
