Strange Water Issues/Rubber banding

  • So I've been running into some problems in the game recently. I am playing on Windows 10.
My first problem is a strange graphical thing with the water. When I go out to sea the waves are flat and pointy. I'm running on rare graphics settings. This isn't anything major, just a minor annoyance.

My second problem is some major rubber banding issues. Sometimes the game will run smoothly, other times i will be getting thrown all over the place and the game will become unplayable. Is there any way to fix this?

  • Try starting a ping -t running to say 8.8.8.8 and see what happens when you rubberband to see if it is your actual wifi/isp connection that is stalling.

  • @dyfrin Ok, my average results are:
    Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=23ms TTL=54

  • @sebthesailor108
What you are looking for is the time=23ms to jump to 200+ right when rubberbanding is happening. The way you can do that is to leave the command going (the -t keeps it going) in the background while you are playing.

Often wifi or router device issues will cause interruptions of the communication with the server, so the client thinks it's at one position and the server corrects you and "snaps" you back.

So most of the time it is your connection to the server at fault. Sometimes it is the server under load, but if others aren't experiencing it, it's you.

If you are on PC then do this in your command prompt.

    ping www.google.com -n 30

The number 30 indicates how many packets you want to test. You can set that number to anything. Ctrl-C to cancel it.

Check the packets. Repeat the process. Honestly -n 100 would be the best indicator. If you have any packets that hit are higher then 100ms or 150ms then you have packet issues.

If you see frequently packet drops then you have packet loss issues.

Could be an issue with your service provider, or your router/modem.

If you are on Wifi then do you know of anyone that installed anything NEW recently? New phone, new thermostat, new whatever that is connecting to the wifi?

Security cameras are the worst because they use a lot of bandwidth depending on the quality of the recordings people want.

Any more details on the problem would be good. If you already fixed the issue, then tell us what you did to fix the problem.

This goes for everyone also. If you ever had a problem and you post about it. If it gets fixed, reply and let everyone know what happened and what you did to fix it.

  • @dyfrin Sorry it took so long to reply, I've been a bit busy.
Ok, the time does jump up to around 200-300 when I rubberband.

  • Pinging google or their dns (8.8.8.8) won't indicate anything because the routing from your PC to Google will likely be entirely different from the routing from your PC to the game server. You may see some packet loss or you may not, depending on if packet loss is a global connection issue that affects everything you do. If its only an issue with the connection to the game server, you won't see anything; you'd need to get the game server IP and do trace routes to that to get a better picture.

  • What 8.8.8.8 is good for is detecting if it is a:
computer to router to isp to internet issue, or just a game issue.
Google is very reliable, so it's a good test.

Check the gateway address of ipconfig and that is your router address.

Then start 2 pings (2 command prompts):
    One ping to google.
    One ping to your router.

When you rubberband next time, if google shows the delay, and your router does not, it is not your connection to router, it is ISP, you can call and have them and then try to troubleshoot their modem/network.

If the delay shows on both, then it is your computer to the router.

If you are on wifi, what you will want to do is check what channels are high usage around you and change your router to a new channel.

I have a soundbar that is 2.4, and forcing that to stay on one channel and moving wifi off of it was good.
    Check out articles like: https://support.metageek.com/hc/en-us/articles/200628894-WiFi-and-non-WiFi-Interference-Examples
This will show you how even someone starting a microwave, or worse, a DRONE can make your wifi congested, and thus rubberband.

If you are wired with ethernet to your router, try another cable (sometimes kinks can really mess with CRC errors that most routers don't show), I would upgrade firmware on it, or if it is really old, replace it.

    Good luck!

  • @dyfrin Thanks for this info, I'll look into it.

  • Sorry I haven’t followed up for a long time, but I got an Ethernet cable and most of my problems have been fixed. Thanks for the help!

Yeah whole point was to first figure out if it was a connection issue. More than likely it will always be a connection issue. Modem, router, cable, the line from the ISP. It is RARELY a routing issue. I used to be a line tech. You'd be surprised how easily connection issues flared up from loose connectors, bad fittings, just a little bit of water getting into the line. Old wiring. Rat chew, squirrel chew. Etc etc.

I had one job where the Coax cable had so much water in it from the rain that it actually POURED out of the line when I cut the cable. I had suspicions there was water and cut it behind to wall and sure enough it just kept pouring out water.

Man I loved and hated that job. Run into the craziest stuff.

    @SebTheSailor108

good job going ethernet. Trust me and this goes for anyone.

If you are on WiFi and you are gaming. Get off the WiFi. Especially if the modem is in the same room as you.

Frequently do that Ping test to figure out when you are having issues. Learn about basic networking and how internet works. It'll help you diagnose these problems in the future.
