Devils Roar is just a waste of map space.

  • Well, it isn't. Just because I did most of my athena quests there and I learned a lot about this area. Little spoiler: The geysers do not appear in all types of terrain and are a wonderful help to get rid of quantities and masses of skeletons. Provided you know which floor you should not walk on and which one the skeletons should walk on.

At Devil's Roar it's all about mechanics. Devil's Roar is hard if you don't know about them, they are helpfull, if you know about them. Furthermore, there are plenty of them, therefore plenty of moments to take the wrong decission.

Devil's Roar is a special place. If you can't or don't want to be there, don't be there. I don't like the grey, gloomy area of Kraken's Fall, but I wouldn't rage about it or say it's stupid or a waste.

  • Reward for effort in the devils roar is non existent on the treasure journeys even at max lvl 50 journeys.

I know how they work but having the geysers going non stop is just stupid.

  • @kobra4killz The whole idea of the Devils Roar's loot being worth more is the higher risk/difficulty. They already tuned it down way too much, it's a joke now just like Megs and sloop kraken. Basically what people are asking at this point is 2x loot for the same difficulty as the normal side.. smh

  • I do hate the Devil's Roar as well, not because of the threat difficulty but because of the environment.

Before it was added to the game, my worst environment was the wilds. That dark place, the landscape I still avoid to do voyages there.

But now it's the Roar. It's similar environment makes me nuts... Plus, the annoyance of the frequent volcanic eruptions (not the difficulty) but the earthquakes is definitely the worst for me... I'm a controller player and the fact that earthquakes are always stoping my character from running even inside the ship makes me very nervous. Constantly pressing L3 to run just to see the character stop 2 seconds after isn't very good.

  • Pain in the butt? - OMFG Dude...are you for real? it's so nerfed it's been ridiculousy easy.

  • I do agree that the Devil's Roar is a frustrating experience. There's always something blocking you from actually playing and enjoying your time. The true fun-killer is when it becomes clear that the game is targeting you. When everything is calm, you start digging a chest and POP a geyser just appears right below your feet for the hundred time, it just feels cheap and un-fun.
I remember how it was when the Devil's Roar came out, my god, those volcanoes... That was truly irritating since it was clear that the game was targeting you, that nothing was random.
Another general thing that I don't like is waiting. Waiting for the volcano to stop, waiting for the geyser to stop so that you can dig your chest etc. It's just not a thrilling experience. Those are the times when I feel that the game fails the most.

But it was toned down. And right now, we're in a weird place.
Everything was nerfed because it was (and it still is) pretty frustrating to play in it.
But, in the meantime, it's also way too easy compared to the reward you get.
It's now a combination of a frustrating and easy experience, wich is the exact opposite of what it should be in my opinion.

I'd love it to be a true challenging area, with special skeletons armed with special attacks and powers for example.
A true randomness in the volcano and geysers, skeletons being immune to them etc. Something else than what it is right now. But I don't think it will ever happen, sadly :(

  • What I dislike about the Devil's Roar is actually what it did to the rest of the world once people start grinding Athena. Due to the doubled rewards, you'd be out of your mind to grind in the old world.

Apart from that, it's cool to have some different mechanics. Try using them to your advantage. I don't hate gold skellies so much thanks to the geysers. 😜

  • I think the Devil's Roar was fine ever since it was release with one minor complaint of mine being the one-hit-kill rocks (are they still there?).

A mechanic which instantly kills you and you aren't able to avoid (the hit you even if you run) no matter how good you are is, in my eyes, a bad design decision!

Others the risk/reward in the region is awesome.

  • @capt-bonebeard sagte in Devils Roar is just a waste of map space.:

Yes they are still there. Not as accurate as before though.

  • @neptuncynic sad to hear though.

Can't imagine to solo Sloop around there and not be able to care about my ship because I got installed in the middle of repairs.

Now we even have to consider the new damage model and cracked masts.

  • @kobra4killz tje Devil's roar is the best area in the game and the only functionally different one. The geysers are not bad design. Bad design in making everything in the game easier for new players, and in this case for players who don't like the concept of the area in the first place.

  • @kobra4killz
The devils roar is so easy now. Please don't ask for even more nerfs. I've survived an eruption with starter supplies!

  • Geysers are great to kill skeletons.
And the Roars was nerfed to death and is 10 times easier as when it git introduced.

    To.much whining for me, sorry.

  • Higher rewards means higher risks. If it were the same as other regions people would only venture out of the DR for the change of scenery and greater number of outposts.

  • @kobra4killz sagte in Devils Roar is just a waste of map space.:

I know how they work but having the geysers going non stop is just stupid.

This is your argument: because it is stupid? I am out.

  • @fractal-pitch I agree with most of your post. But I never wait to watch a volcano or a geyser. There is always enough to do for me or there is an alternative course of action.

  • Try a new approach to the area and use the tools given to you or don't go. This game doesn't force you to play a clear-cut way. Play how you want. Go where you want. Don't go where you don't want to go.

  • I agree. The geysers ruin this area for me. Not enjoyable. Not even a challenge just pure frustrating nuisance.

If you are trying to find treasure it's near impossible with the amount that spawn around you and under you.

  • Your a waste of forum space

Okay, get past what I said it was just what I yelled at the screen when I saw your post

I miss the days when the Roar was way harder. When volcanos AIM for you.
Now, getting the red lantern is almost as hard as getting the white one (seriously, I sailed for 30 min in a storm and neither me or my sloopmate even got hurt once by lightning. Scallywags)

  • Personally and my crew love being in the roar. Mostly because everyone else hates it. Can focus a bit more without a ship popping up every 3 minutes. It's a cake walk with the volcanoes nerfed.

  • The Devil's Roar is my favorite area. It has been great fun until its soul was nerfed out of it.

  • I don’t think the mechanics are stupid at all. It’s a challenge. I don’t want the game to keep getting easier. Just because it frustrates you and you don’t want to do it doesn’t mean they should alter the game for you. Go play getting over it with Benny foddy the game is difficult and will frustrate you. After that come back with a new appreciation.

  • Yeah...the geysers are pretty stupid as they just home in on you much like the volcano rock, overall it just feels cheap and tedious I think it honestly should be 100% random no homing missile geysers and volcanic rock, the only benefit going for geysers is that they can destroy skeletons if you lure them into it.

I've spent a lot of time in the roar but it's never fun especially if you are doing an athena's too, tanky skeletons that spawn non stop is the last thing you need in the roar when all you want to do is dig up a bunch of chests and get out of there as quick as possible.

I get the roar was nerfed but it's still a pain in the butt so that means it's still not fun, really don't think anything will be done about it though.

  • @dr-katman
Then don't go there. It's too easy right now, and geysers are already random.

  • @blazedrake100

Apart from geysers are not completely random they follow you around and although in theory no one has to ever go to the roar, rare have a habit of introducing additional commendations with each mercenary quest update that require you to go to the roar so if you want that commendation/doubloons/title or time limited item you don't have much choice really.

but what ever like i already said i don't think anything will be done about it anyway.

  • Its my favorite space. Only complaint is it's so bleak. After getting used to the Reach everywhere else seems easy and boring.

Volcanoes can be annoying though but then I get fishing time.

  • @lawnpaul totally agree with you about the lights.

I just stand on hotspots now, can’t say the same about lightning. I do my best to be at low health when a storm is around, which is challenging for me as I can’t stand that bar down on the lower left hand corner of the screen burning an image in my tv.

  • @scrubber89 Just did a relic order in DR, it was pretty fine...

  • @br0crastinat0r I eat even if I'm at 99% health. I can't stand the health bar being visible either

  • There are two major problems with DR:

    1. auto aim volcanos with 1hit kill (does not give you anny possibility to prevent it)
    2. if DR is empty(no other ships) you activate all volcanos on your route and destination isle when you swim close to them. So on every isle you arrive you need to wait till volcano eruption ends. Annoying and not fun(nor hard) at all.

    What to do to fix?

    1. remove 1hit to kill possibility. Instead, maybe, increase number of rocks that can hit you. There is nothing more annoying then random death you cant avoid

2)Implement some proper Volcano triggers. Im good with waiting till eruption ends from time to time but not one EVERY isle on my route.

Other then that DR is fine

You cannot prevent being hit with a rock by standing in the open, but you can significantly decrease the chances of it happening and mitigate the damage that results.

    • Do not drop your anchor when you park or at least raise it before you jump onto land. That way you can drop sails and go immediately as needed. Yes, if the island shakes it will push the boat out a bit, but this is better than trying to raise the anchor while getting pummeled.
    • Point the nose of your boat away from the island before you jump onto land, preferably in a way that makes good use the wind if you have to leave in a hurry.
    • As soon as the island starts to rumble, drop what you are doing and head to the boat. This is where people get tripped up. They gamble that it is just an earthquake and end up in trouble half the time.
    • If you are on your boat during an eruption, keep planks on hand and STAY BELOW as much as possible. Standing at the helm when you are already headed towards safety in open water is just stupid. You lower your chances of being struck with less time standing in a dangerous spot.
    • Stay at full health as long as you are in the circle of danger. This also decreases your chance of dying to a falling rock.

These are the kinds of skills and decisions you can employ to deal with the volcanoes and prevent dying by falling rocks.

That is not how the volcanoes work. You do not trigger them to go off as soon as you step foot on them. The longer you are on one, THAT may play into it, but overall it is random. There also appears to be a wave of eruptions that starts from the south and moves north over time. During this wave, almost all of the volcanoes in that latitude will go off at once. If you can start at the south and jump on an island as the wave slowly moves north then you can have a little extra peace as you work your way up the chain of destinations within the trough of dormant islands.

  • I dont want to start another discussion.
There HUGE difference with being hit with a rock and insta dying when on 100% health. Its a game. It should be fun. Random "one shot" death is never fun.

Not gonna convince you. Just find empty DR server and sail colse to volcano. See what happens.

    Cheers:)

So you just ignore the methods I've provided for avoiding the situation and you are back to the "one shot" argument. I've soloed the heck out of DR. I know exactly what happens, and I know how to deal with the challenges. Jump on my sloop someday, and don't do a thing. Just watch me run through an Athena voyage without getting killed by a boulder. I'm not even any good (I'm told this quite often by other players whether I killed and sank them or they got me), but I know how to avoid problems. I may die by other threats (death in the game means nothing) but not a boulder, and my boat will not sink. Especially after the place has been nerfed again. If you are consistently being killed by boulders, then your actions are putting you at risk and you just do not realize it.

Let's take this another direction. If I let someone kill me with a gun powder keg, is that unfair? Or do I have ways to avoid that nonsense? If I stand in front of someone's blunderbuss and take a shot at point blank, was that unfair or did I have ways to avoid it? If I fall from a great height and die in the game, was that unfair or was that a result of bad choices? It is the same in DR. If I get hit with a flaming boulder, I missed or ignored opportunities to avoid it.

I'll tell you what's not fun. Playing a game that doesn't meaningfully push back. It is boring as heck and it is a major reason why I have been struggling to even fire the game up anymore. I may play an hour or two a week now. I used to play it exclusively, but the challenge was sucked out of it because people couldn't be bothered to grab planks before heading into DR. They didn't want to lean how to effectively handle sniper skeletons. They didn't like being surprised or punished for lack of due diligence. So no, I disagree that DR is a waste of map space. I disagree that it is bad design if you are one-hit killed by a boulder that you had ample opportunities to avoid before it ever left the volcano.

  • @ghostpaw
It really is too easy now. I don't even bother leaving my island because of an eruption, because you can literally survive on starter supplies. I miss the fear of an earthquake
