  • @catchesthunder Then don’t go. It is my favorite area, followed closely with The Wilds. Care to add any constructive feedback, or at least more details about what exactly you don’t like about it, or is that all we get?

  • I love how SoT makes me feel small and frail. There's Godzilla like squids, overgrown fish, and the Devil's Roar, though I wish they kept the earthquake sensation when you're onboard your ship. Aside from storms, it's one of the ways to test your sailing capabilities.

  • @catchesthunder
Why do you feel this way, what design decissions makes it bad in your eyes ?

Feedback works better in a constructive way.

I love the roar, the fireballs running between geysers and guiding skellies into them.

  • i dislike the Roar myself atm, i loved it when they released it tough! (Can we just have the original released version with just the nerf/fix to the sniping balls?) because it's way to easy atm.

All the events have a legend voyage and that one is in the roar, they might aswell just open it to all cause the roar is often easier to sail then the wilds tbh.

  • @CatchesThunder can you explain a bit more why and make this a constructive feedback but just a rant?!

The Roar was nerfed to death.
It's in no way comparable anymore and way too easy today imho.

  • @Ghostpaw @Nessiroj Any chance you guys may want to explain to me the different ocean regions? What makes each unique? Aside from Devil's Roar, all the oceans look the same to me

  • @uribedh

This was the original world, with the 3 regions on it.
    original

When Rare released the Forsaken Shores they added a new region to the right side (east) map called the Devils Roar (in short the Roar).

And the map is how you see it ingame (couldn't find an image that quick) or check https://maps.seaofthieves.rarethief.com/

    More info about locations: https://seaofthieves.gamepedia.com/Locations

  • There is a (slight) diversity in the Biosphere's of the game's 4 regions. The DR is by far the most extreme example of this. Personally I would like to see more diversity between the other 3.

But I don't know exactly what you mean when you say "poorly designed"? The DR is (intentionally) the most dangerous and difficult region. If that is what you mean to say? Maybe a bit more clarity from your part would help push this discusion in a positive direction?

  • @mr-dragon-raaar I think you mean "scorched"

  • So, don't go...

The Wilds is very different, but I do agree that the Shores of Plenty and Ancient Isles are very similar to each other.

The Ancient Isles has a bit more of a jungle vibe to it, but that's not really obvious on most islands. I could have sworn that during the beta and just after launch the Shores of Plenty had a "clearer" ocean though and was a bit more distinct, but I might be remembering incorrectly.

  • The Devil's Roar was made to be a challange and a dangerous place, I got mad with that place so many times!! But is the way it was made to be... It had to be a challange, not an easy walk... its sad how anyone remembers that place like how should be. Instead of that is just a place that its not even challenging anymore, nobody wants to go there nowadays, People who complain about the place never went and never will go, and those who wanted a challange won't find it there anymore.

I love the atmosphere of that area and it still is amazing! But it needs to get back that challenging dificulty for thoose who want. It's FIRE'S LAND, THE DEVIL'S HOME! THE HELL ITSELF! NEEDS TO BE HARD!! For Kraken's FURY!!!

    Yeehaaa!!!
Spreaaad the curse in the seaaas!!

  • @realstyli Agreed. You definitely "know" when you are in "The Wilds" but the Shores of Plenty and Ancient Isles are too similar. I'd like to see a bit more diversity there. Even if was just the lighting.

Still not sure what @CatchesThunder means with the DR being poorly designed? But it's certainly the most different of the 4.

Funny, it's usually the only place I spend time unless it's for event-specific voyages :)

  • If it was up to me, I’d make it massively harsh again, but improve the likeliness of finding valuable loot on islands that house volcanos. The area is suppose to be risk vs reward. I can’t remember the last time my ship got hit by lava.

  • I don't enjoy it. The geysers are the only thing I hate. The game is borderline unplayable when they are going off, which is most of the time. Volcanoes, hot water are fine and add an element of hast and awareness. But the geysers add nothing they just bring gameplay to a halt.

  • @viperishemu2992 But the lighting is different! The Ancient Isles is a bit more subdued with its lighting whereas the Shores of Plenty is bright, bright bright! It's especially noticeable with the sunrise and sunset in each region if you have 4K HDR enabled. Also, the water too - it's bright blue in the Shores, but in the Isles, it's more of a greenish-blue hue.

  • Welp, OP did catch thunder with his post.

  • I actually agree with @catchesthunder.

The auto lock-on targeting rocks was a bad way to design the roar in my opinion. It introduces a sort of "fake" difficulty. There is no way more skilled players can avoid the rocks through skill. There's no way to "get better." So, this turns the area into a boring waiting game. You just sit outside the volcanoes range until it is done (or move onto another island if there is something to do there).

You can't rowboat in (which was the ENTIRE point of the rowboat) because the rowboat is an entity that can be targeted by the rocks. Your chances of making it to the island are slim. This eliminates interaction with two other gameplay features of the roar: hot water (which again, the rowboat was supposed to combat), and "lava" on the islands.

The geysers also make skeletons way too easy, and don't spawn randomly themselves either. They will always spawn where you need to dig.

The earthquakes impacting your movement sounds like a cool and interesting feature until you actually are in it. Turns out that gameplay mechanics that limit your ability to control your character are just frustrating and annoying.

The area is also a joke on a Galleon because it's so easy (even before the nerfs). The sloop can be extremely difficult before the nerf (but again, that's pretty much because of auto-lock on which feels cheap) and I want to see that difficulty on all ships. Not sure if that is possible to do though because being alone is harder by nature.

The area is a really cool concept and I love the idea of having a harder region of the game geared towards more skilled players (or "end game") but I feel like the implementation is just off.

  • @catchesthunder
No Sir , i will disagree ...Maybe you gave this region a quick look after you got scared away by the volcanoes...i agree on one point and that's the fact that the Devil's Roar is too easy.In the first weeks the complaints were numerous , people only focussed on the fact that they sunk quickly. It took our crew a week to figure out how to survive there and so we did...After that we could soak in all it's Beauty ...Agreed , the region looks desolate , despair but that's the same thing with every Fallout game as well...How could you get a happy feeling or meet merry characters if the world around you has been burned?...

But the Devil's Roar has so much more details , all it's beauty lies in it's subtle details. Have you dived under the Sea , even the ashes there hace reshaped the vision of what lies beneath . Sea weed has a different tint of colour ...Look at the Great skies in which the sun has trouble to burn through the Lava dust...A lot of details we take for granted here while we haven't seen these things in other games.
Even the Music has this threat od danger in it's musicnotes...No, this region may not look as flourishing as Shores of Plenty , still i place them on the same height , because Mrs Preston and her team have succeeded in creating a desolate region in a way that the player doesn't get depressed...To compare again with Fallout...If i play out Fallout , then i'm drained , and it will take many months before i pick it up again...i always get a feel of depression when i play them and i love to play them , but it always leaves a bit of " playdamage " to me...

But when playing Devil's Roar , i leave that place without depressed feelings , and that's the Great Work of the Graphical and Musical Team.

i think that the Devil's Roar team has done an absolutely Great Effort in creating this region...The only sad thing is that they bowed towards the naggings because the Real Pirate loves the original Difficulty...We did adapt , formed a routine in our crew to withstand the harsh conditions but many panicked and Rare is too good...Therefore the Devil's Roar lost a bit of it's challenge it once was and that is really the only letdown of this Splendidly designed Region...

  • Wrong, I love the DR

  • @xcalypt0x Which is exactly why it is a great place to quest for players who don't want to get Involved in PvP. No one goes to the DR!

  • @nessiroj I wished the wilds actually had a maelstrom. Hopefully we get an update that deals with storms and whirlpools

  • @xcalypt0x Whether the rocks auto-lock-on or not is a moot point, since they can't change direction once airborne. Simply slow the boat just enough to turn and avoid the incoming debris. Easy!

  • Speak your mind and explain.

Except you can't tell where they are going to land. There is no indicator.

  • @xcalypt0x Geometry, yo! Look at the height and arc, and do the math. I'm terribad at math, and even I can figure it out.

  • @galactic-geek Lol true. Even still though, the thing that makes the auto-lock on feel cheap is when you get hit by 3-4 rocks back to back. It just feels unrealistic and... IDk, lame.

But IDk... I still would like a shadow indicator, I feel like that would make it feel better for people. That way if you get hit it feels like it's your fault.

  • The roar in its prime, or 30 seconds of it lol -

It was love/hate, but in all the right ways!
