Getting killed all the time.

  • I started playing this game yesterday with a friend, we chose the sloop since we were only playing it together. We were constantly getting killed by high level players on big ships, this is not fun. Besides getting a refund, what can we do about that?

  • @illuminati-69 just the usual tips.

Keep a lookout and don't allow crews you don't think you can beat to catch you.

Learn how the weapons and combat work and practice them. (That goes for sailing as well).

The game is pretty simple, it's just a matter of practice.

  • Look on YT or read up on how to use your sloop. Once u get the hang of it, you will be sinkin those guys easy.

Its an open world pvpve game. U have infinite ships and infinite lives. Dont give up. Theres a great game here once you learn to defend yourself.

  • Hello, first let me welcome you to the Sea of Theives, please don't leave just yet.

You might not have been aware, it took me to come to the forums to ask when I first started out, but the Sloop will out run any and all ships if you head into the wind.

Couple that with a few well placed Gun powder barrels as they are chasing you tends to put off most people.

Another tactic is to jump off your sloop (where they cant see) and try to grab their ladder, if you get onboard try to drop their anchor, worst case senario you die and spend 60 seconds on the Ferry while your ship sails itself (if solo)

I know it is SO frustrating to lose, but please do not get attached to the loot, it is everywhere.

Cash in often so that you don't loss a HUGE haul of loot. But 1 don't be scared to fight back, yes they have the numbers on you but if you can try to dictate the fight, make them fight when and how you want.

This is usually enough to put off most attacks as they rely on the element of suprise.

  • Ahoy there and welcome to the game!

I'm sorry to hear that, but, don't give up! This is part of the game, and, see the good side. Try to think what you did wrong, and what they did in order to kill and sink you.

Also, I recommend that often you watch out the horizon in order to see approaching ships. Also, I recommend that you sell regularly, so if you sink, you don't lose a lot of loot.

And with these tips, and a bit of practising you will get better and you won't sink that much. But, keep in mind that siking and stealing is part of the game, so you're going to deal with it.

Good luck on the seas matey!

  • @illuminati-69 What can we do about that? Nothing.

What can YOU do about it though? Learn from your mistakes.

You're new, so yes, it's going to be hard. However, there are ways you can keep from getting killed, or even attacked, and most of this simply has to do with knowledge, which you can't get unless someone helps you out, or unless you, well, play the game. This is SoT, after all, and isn't meant to hold your hand. You learn by doing. Don't be so quick to give up.

Ask yourself these questions (and more) and see what you can do about it:

    1. What went wrong?
    2. What could you have done better?
    3. How could you have done it better?
    4. What did the other crews do that worked?
    5. What are your other options?

The ships are balanced fairly well overall - generically speaking, the sloop is the most maneuverable, the brigantine is the fastest, and the galleon has a lot of firepower. What separates each crew is their experience. Get the experience by answering the questions I have provided above each time you fail, and things WILL get better. I promise you.

Keep your head on a swivel and always be prepared for an encounter - because it's not a matter of if, but when...

  • First off all welcome on the forums and seas.

You prob will get some "hard" advice in the next few replies but they hold truth.

Sea of Thieves is a open sandbox PvPvE online game, where besides the "quests" your trying to do there are other players who will be playing.

There is no advantage in being "higher" level exept the expierence said person might have in the game and with the mechanics of the game.

If your with 2 then the sloop is an excellent choice of ship, it's fast but also agile. This is also it's biggest advantage as you will learn with more hours in the game.

If your getting camped by "high" level players (or any player for that matter) you have 2 options. 1 is scuttle your ship (you will respawn on a new location with a new ship) or you can leave the game to the main lobby and start a new voyage. Chance is that you enter an other server where the crews might be abit less hostile.

Keep in mind, Sea of Thieves is a pirate game after all, so you never know what you might encounter on the seas.

That said make sure you turn in the loot early, don't safe up to much but activly bring it to an outpost while your learnign the game. The loot aint your till your delivered on an outpost.

Keep your eyes on the horizon, scannen for other ships and see what they are going to do.

  • @illuminati-69

Just scuttle the ship. Essentially it’s manually destroying your ship. You will loose resources and any treasure but, if you have nothing then you have nothing to loose.

Some servers are more hostile than others. Also, don’t fly the reaper flag. There is a flag that will show your exact location on the map. It’s essentially a PvP flag. If you see a shadow ship on the map, it’s another crew flying that flag.

Honestly, I just run away and don’t engage other people’s PvP behavior. I will sail off the edge of the map so no one can have my treasure. If you sail far enough into the Red Sea (edges of the map) you will be teleported off your ship. When that happens, no one can get the treasure

  • Thanks for all the friendly advise, I appreciate that a lot.

I guess we will be sailing an empty ship for a while to get the hang of sailing and evading before going to do any treasure hunting. :p

  • @coffeelight5545 So if you have the Jolly Roger flag up people can see you on the map?

  • @illuminati-69 said in Getting killed all the time.:

@coffeelight5545 So if you have the Jolly Roger flag up people can see you on the map?

Not the Jolly Roger; the Reaper's Mark - it's the red flag with the SoT logo.

Most flags don't actually do anything, and are thus open to interpretation (and lying), but that one does make you visible on the map - they won't know what size ship or crew you have, but they will know where you are and can track your movements. Savvy pirates can even guess what you're doing in some cases, like with the Mercenary Bilge Rat voyages based upon where you go - and can plan their attack accordingly. It's risky, but you can even use it to lure people into traps or to make friends.

Another flag that has an actual use is the Alliance flag. Simply tab over in the flag menu to the penant flags - you'll see a flag with a heart on it. If you use this, you can join into an alliance with any nearby ship that accepts your offer by putting up their join alliance flag. Alliances are great, but fickle things, because you can earn more loot for less work, but always have the risk of being betrayed at any time. It's kind of a high-risk, high reward system:

    1. no alliance = regular loot.
    2. prosperous alliance = 1.5x the loot.
    3. betrayed alliance = 2x the loot, or nothing (depending on outcome).
  • @galactic-geek Roger that!

Nah just do some treasurehunting, it's just having luck or bad luck on the hostilities on the server.

The majority of the "high level" players (Pirate legend or above) often find the server to quiet (they mean they aren't getting attacked enough) so it's just a roll with the dice.

Just start a quest try to complete it while practicing the other aspects of the game, eventuelly you need to do both anyway so might aswell start.

Just the most important thing is your mindset:

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE LOOT IT'S ABOUT THE JOURNEY

aka the loot is not important, it's about the fun you have while ingame.

It might not mean much atm, but you will remember that line when you keep sailing for abit.

PS while the Tall Tales a really nice to do atleast onces, don't touch those yet till you understand the game abit. Losing those items will really hurt.

  • @illuminati-69 said in Getting killed all the time.:

    @galactic-geek Roger that!

Edited my last post to provide more info for you.

I also forgot to mention: The alliance flag ALSO shows you on the map to your allies, AND they can see what ship size you have. When in an alliance, they still appear the same as other pirates and FF is still active, so always be wary of them. Take measures to prevent betrayal or even 3rd-party infiltration (yes, it does happen) by having alliance rules in place (like not being allowed on each other's ships) or even a password to identify each other (or you could simply learn their actual gamertags).

  • @illuminati-69

Welcome to the seas you landlover. Being a pirate is not something that you can become by just setting sail, so expect a decent learning curve.

    Couple of quick pointers:

    1. Do not sail with more treasure than you are willing to lose, as you will lose it at times. (Sell at outposts)
    2. Pay attention to the situation (mermaids indicate players near for instance, watch your ladders etc.) and horizon, enemy pirates do not show up out of thin air. If you see them you can decide how to respond: Flee, Fight, Try to negotiate (be willing to fight).
    3. When you park, raise those sails and that anchor to provide yourself the option to start moving by just dropping sails. Preparation is half the battle.
    4. Never fully trust other crews.
    5. Be flexible, sometimes plans need to change.
    6. Practice, learn and enjoy!
  • @cotu42 Thanks for the tips, much appreciated!

Just remember that higher levels only mean they have played the game longer. There are no power upgrades just more experience. Always keep a lookout 360 degrees around your ship to spot distant threats. If a galleon does come for you then sail your sloop directly into the wind(slowest mode). This will force the bigger ship to do the same which means they will be going even slower. Jump off your ship and drop their anchor. Or use this time to practice combat. Another option Is to jump into the arena and practice your combat until you get confident. Have fun and hope you decide to stick it out.

@cotu42 Thanks for the tips, much appreciated!

Your mentality being displayed here is a breath of fresh air. Way too many people just come here making demands, when confronted with opposing feedback, they double down and get defensive as well as argumentative. Hearing stuff like this, is greatly appreciated.

  • @illuminati-69
You could sail with me some time and I can show you the ropes and help you learn some of the more obscure"features" that won't be obvious to newer players. Feel free to add me and invite me if you see me on.

  • @illuminati-69 Hey there, welcome to the seas! What a wholesome thread, I see there are already a number of good responses to your original question and you seem to be taking all of the advice in stride!

Since there are already a number of good suggestions I will just add one minor detail. Head over to

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/category/62/gameplay-guides-tips

when you get a chance. There is a plethora of threads for players to learn new things and improve.

  • Ha, that's the kind of welcoming and friendly answers coming from experimented pirates and frequent users of this forum that I like, thank you all who participated, I was losing a bit of faith on this forum.

My advice would be to not do quests for the moment (as they are usually designed to make you go where other ships are), and only sails wherever there's no ships, always have a look on the horizon and be ready to flee, not be too far from an unoccupied outpost (sell frequently) and search directly for treasures on islands (you can find a lot actually : chests, skulls, gems, etc) AND in the sea around islands, shipwrecks, etc.

Go for fights only when you're loot free or confortable enough to lose it. Die, sink a lot, and you'll be a proper pirate in no time.

  • @illuminati-69 welcome to the Sea of Thieves and the forms mate!

I am very proud of all my fellow brothers and sisters of the sea here. This is truly the welcome and response to someone new to the sea and around these parts. Makes me truly proud to be pirate!

With time and practice you can become a competent, experienced, and proud pirate too. Do not lose heart and dock your ship just yet. Give it time mate. I will not sugar coat it that there will not be times like this still ahead and to be honest the game does have its problems that need love and a proper fixing. There can and will be way more fun and better experiences to be had if you keep sailing mate.

Sea of Thieves has it ups and downs like the waves on the sea. Some times it can feel like you sailed into a storm and cannot find your way out with your compass spinning wildly and lightening striking all around you. If you grip the helm tight, take all this excellent, expert advice to heart, you will find calmer waters.

In those calmer waters you will find adventure, treasure, alliances, villains, and new friends. You will have all kinds of stories to tell. You will become an old salt giving the next land lover who gets that itch to sail the Sea of Thieves the same advice.

Keep sailing. Start making and telling your own stories and those you will make with others. All of us are looking forward to hearing them. If you have questions, want more tips, just let us know. If you want to sail with us, I and I am sure others here, will be very happy to have you and your mate join us on a brig or galleon. My spouse and I would be honored to help you find a home here.

I wish you fair winds and may you find all you are truly looking for sailing the Sea of Thieves!

  • First off Level means nothing I’m Pirate Legend and Iv been killed be none PLs and as of getting killed by other all the time best thing to do is try and run or fight till you get good enough to hold your own yea it sucks to get beat on every fight but you’ll get the hang of it sooner or later this is a skill based game lvls are meaning less out side cool looking cosmetics if you wanna learn to fight better do the Order Of Souls Quest it will get you a feel for the base mechanics other than that fight against those who look around your skill lvl Good luck and welcome to the Sea Of Thieves

  • Throw half your loot overboard. 😂

  • Thanks so much for the warm welcome everyone, and all the helpful tips I got.
I will put them to the test the next time i'm on.

  • @illuminati-69
Hello Mr Illuminati-69, first of all and this made me smile , it's mostly us , the common man that needs help against the Illuminati ...Yes , i know , bad joke , i won't do it again, i promise( * really ,Moron, ...are you promising this and sign it on a contract with yer own blood?...fool).

First of all, those High Level Pirates are really just as powerful as you , they carry the same guns ,wield the same swords and shoot the same cannons in power, only the cosmetic may change but that's it...What they do have more than you is experience but that didn't came without hardship.

If there is one Pirate , just one that dare to say he never got sunk then i call him/her a liar...Sea of Thieves is a game that you learn to master by falling down , wipe yer mouth and get back in...

i do not envy you because you also came into a game that is much and much richer than a year ago , also a lot of Pirates progressed and learnt to defend and attack ...

The first thing you need to do is to get acqauint with yer ship. A Sloop is slow but is the most nimblest turner of the Sea , you can really outturn Brigantina's and Galleons untill they give up the chase.
Second , always keep an eye to the Horizon, and if you see something , track it ,best without spyglass , spyglasses betray through shining yer position sometimes...If you have a crew with more than one , it's best to keep one aboard...Never drop anchor because picking that one up may take time , time you may not have when Pirates come from around the island you are exploring...

Keep yer haord small , cash in often , this way a loss won't hurt towards the Heart.i can't give you tips for Pvp sincei'm the worst Pirate ever on that front but i can say that you need to switch yer shots with the cannon a bit....First aim for their cannons , a few shots may kill a Pirate sometimes from one shot , then aim in the hull, preferably under water , if you are on a Sloop and in danger try to aim for their mast ...If that falls they must repair it and that takes time , time for you to sail away or turn around to go at them...

If you board ,try to drop anchor or find their Boom boom barrel, lit or shoot one and enjoy the Fireworks, Gandalf...

You are a New Pirate , yes , but you are a Pirate so don't give up...Maybe join more experienced crews to steal with yer eyes and ears for a few evenings , you will be amazed what you will learn...If you still struggle , you can ask or setup for a Looking for Group option on Xbox Live, really great Pirates are there to help you out...If that not helps then come back towards this Forum and ask to sail with an Experienced Pirate ...

But throwing yer game away or ask a refund...Man, really have some respect for the older Pirate , this kind of Blasphemy is bad for my old Heart, Sir...No ,Serious , it is a Free World , but giving up this game will make that you never had similar , Really Great , Epic and Fun Adventures that many Pirates ,including me , had and made us better as Pirates and human as well...

If you meet the right Pirates , then some Evenings can bring so much Joy that it feels like you are six years old again...The Age is which a Child can isolate him/herself in their own world and be the Hero you have always wanted to be...

So , what say ye , Sir? Walk away and buy a 13th in a dozen game with yer refunded money or be like a Future Champ who rises up from the gutter to become later one of the most celebrated Champs Ever...Hmm, the Choice is yours but if i was standing in yer boots , i knew what to choose from...Sir.

  • @clumsy-george Thanks for your reply. I wont get a refund, prolly said that out of frustration I guess.

I'm taking all the tips I got here and will try again.

Again thanks for all the kind words they are very much appreciated.

  • @illuminati-69 If you're looking for a crewmate to show you a few pointers, or just sail and help out, like @Little-Squash said, I'm available to join as either a crewmate or captain!

  • @badrobott Thanks, I'll keep that in mind :)

  • [Raises hand]🤚

  • @illuminati-69 One way to discourage pursuing ships in my sloop I've found is, if there's a storm, sail headlong into it. It's dangerous, but most crews don't want the hassle.

  • Welcome! Tons of great replies and tips already in this thread, so I'd just like to reitterate a bit:

Death means nothing in this game (you don'y lose money, and there isn't an exp system).
Having your ship sunk means nearly nothing (you lose the supplies that were on board, but they are easily amassed again).
The only thing that really matters is turning in that loot. Keep this fact close, and remember it. As long as you turn in the loot, you win.

If you want to practice aiming, I suggest trying to hit the ship's bell (one at the crow's nest, and one on topdeck). It will ring softly every time you get a direct hit, making it easy to tell if your aim is on, even from great distances.

Learn all the tricks with the sword. This is the best weapon in SoT imo, because it improves your mobility (look up the 'sword lunge' or 'sword dash' for vids).

Work toward a point where you can identify some major islands and outposts at a glance from a distance. This will keep you from checking the map every 5 sec, and it'll also help with tactics.

One of the best aspects of this game is the absence of skill trees and abilities. Everyone is on equal footing, as far gameplay. This does mean it's somewhat 'sink or swim' for the new players. Hang in there and heed the stellar advice that was already in this thread, and I hope to see ya on the high seas, mate!

  • @illuminati-69 Lots of good advice here, all the things you need to know to help you find your sea legs and gather experience. I just wanted to stress one point that has been mentioned.
Don't fret losing your treasure. It's hard work to gather, yes. It's frustrating when you lose it, yes. But the good news is, there is an endless supply. Learn to enjoy the process of finding and winning loot more than the loot selling. Your gold and doubloons stash will grow over time regardless of how much is stolen by pirates, meg's or the dreaded Kraken! With some time invested following all that has been said here, soon you will be fully addicted to SoT like the rest of us and remember these early experiences with a smile! Good Luck and Favorable Winds Matey!
