Hit registration is the worst I have ever seen among any multiplayer game I have ever played. The false hit markers need to be fixed NOW!!!!! Its one thing to get a hit on someone and not get a hit marker, but it's another thing when you get a hit marker and it isn't an actual hit. It is a false impression that affects someone's aggressiveness towards a certain encounter and it could potentially lead to disaster. I have never seen a game like this where hit markers are given where there are no hits actually occurring (to my knowledge). It needs to be addressed in either the next big update (March 20) or sooner because it is making the gaming experience worse, especially since you cannot control who attacks you and who doesn't, and will lead to many people uninstalling and leaving the game until it is addressed. For example, CDNthe3rd had just announced a break from the game because of this issue being one of the main reasons. Another issue is the glitching of double gunning still happening. Some instances that I have encountered, I have been double gunned with a pistol and blunderbuss. Also the delay between when you first draw your pistol after running needs to go away, I don't see the point for it. They need to make it where there is only delay between gun switches, NOT bananas and after sprinting. It is absolutely ridiculous. Fortnite has done this as a reference to what I am saying. Finally the last thing I am going to discuss is the swords (purely based on opinion, doesn't mean this needs to happen). The swords I feel need to be reworked. The fact that you get frozen in place and get stunned to embrace 3 hits without being able to do anything and then get jumped back is pretty bazaar. I feel like once you get into the trap and you get knocked back against a wall then its all over for you, no escaping or blocking. Maybe they could get rid of the knock-back and stun and keep the sword swinging a little more than 3 times before you're stunned yourself and maybe buff the damage a little bit so it gives an actually feeling of a sword fight and not a quicksand type of feel. This is based purely off opinion and the top of my head, doesn't mean it is what they should do, just food for thought.
Hit reg + PVP Combat needs to be fixed NOW!
Guessing you have not been playing online games for very long.. This game is 20X better than anything that existed 10 years ago.
The fact that this size of a game runs as good as it does is actually impressive given its being likely run on Microsoft business class cloud type systems instead of bespoke game servers.
With that in mind, consider that your connection to the server just as important as the connection your target has to the server..
That's just how these things are done now days, and because of that there will be times when your targets garbage connection will impact your ability to hit him.
If you have a poor connection, then you're suffering because your ability to hit a target is hampered by the fact that things are not really where they appear for you on the TV screen.
I hope that helps a little.
There are ways to deal with lag, namely keeping it "Ship to ship" by playing it super safe, and that's how I deal with really laggy players.
I have even been known to keg my own boat to deal with laggy chum then quickly descend back down to the deck just to make repairs and be done with them.
Although this desperate measure has on rare occasion failed miserably, but it's handy to deal with a laggy situation.
Best of luck on the high seas.

Before I start, I will say that I like SOT, good game. However, this game is not 20X better than other games, there is bunch of games that's actually better than SOT. Then, if you think that map is HUGE, you're mistaken, it's not that big at all, there is other games with much bigger map.

Hit registration is actually a pretty big deal and lot's of people know that this exists and it needs to be fixed. Everyone is having pretty bad ping in SOT because of where servers are located, sometimes you're lagging on boat, maybe you're playing with someone who hosted from Australia and you will be lagging because of it. For me how you described it, it feels like I need to make sure that my connection is good to the server, but it's actually their job to make sure their servers are good.
@swimplatypus7 This game is not nearly as big as other games that run smoothly. This game actually shrunk its size on Xbox one by 50% roughly. It was around 50 GB which is not that big for a game, that is standard size of a game on release. They shrank it down to 25 GB. For the "lag" situation you discussed, everyone is experiencing it and is an issue, but not on our end. I have very good internet and very very rarely have connection problems because of something on my end. Before you go and make claims about me "not playing video games for long, " and trying to falsify the issues that many people have encountered, do your research cause clearly you don't even know the basics of this game and its problems and is just flat out disrespectful. The part of the post where I mentioned false hit markers is a FACT. Everyone has experienced it and if you haven't then it means you either don't PVP that often, or you just don't play the game as much as others. Now I could be wrong about that assessment, and I apologize if I offend you but that's what I got out of that comment.

Also I have been playing video games for as long as I can remember so don't go making rude comments like that to a gamer. I'm not saying I know everything, but I know enough and have played the game since release to have an opinion and to speak my mind. Could've easily made that comment without that first sentence. Unnecessary, just be civil.
I think a few of you misinterpret what was being said.
I know that latency is an issue, and there are problems, but the OP's ridiculous "Fix it NOW" attitude is bit unrealistic and cause the community to be taken less serious by development, in turn the development team will be less likely to view the forums due to toxicity and demanding attitudes by the forum community.
When I was talking abut the size of the game this was also interpreted incorrectly, but again this is not the point.
The point is, this is an online game and it like all other large online games requires upkeep and the client/ server relationship is wonky because it's not really a server like what people classically think of as a server..
If you're familiar with cloud services, that's kinda what they have going here.
It's likely this is the reason for the ship limit cap being 6 ships per server, so that the bill for server services can be kept as low as possible.
Do I agree that latency is a real pain in the rear? YES, but the OP is harming the community wit the way he attacks the development team.
They're human too; remember that!
@swimplatypus7 Not once was OP mentioned in the post. It is not showing "attitude" at all besides the only attitude shown was towards your petty comment that was rude. Obviously they're not gonna "Fix it NOW". It is just to show how it affects players experience in the game. I understand what you are saying now about the servers, but that isn't at all what was implied in the first post so sorry for the misunderstanding.
