The Burning Blade vs The Risen Magpie's Wing

  • @realstyli Hey RealStyli, how do you think the Roar of Curses (or whatever it's called) cold look like? The Ashen Roar comes from a mouth of steel and fire on the Burning Blade, so we need something that could fire the curse front cannons too that matches the theme of Athena's Fortune.

I don't imagine the ship design would be as twisted as the Burning Blade. The curse shot wouldn't need to come out of a mouth or anything. Given Athena's Fortune like to use defensive words like Guardian, I am thinking maybe a shield figurehead of some kind that shoots a beam of energy.

I was thinking something a bit like the front cannons from the Flying Dutchman actually since it's still front cannons. But shields covering them until the lever is pulled and they lower to let the front cannons fire could work. Maybe said cannons can appear under the wings of a gryphon figurehead to reference Ramsey's gryphon peg leg.

Come to think of it, it could kinda look like the gryphon figurehead is sending a tempest of curses at the Burning Blade and other ships that try to attack the Athena's Fortune/Blackwyche.

  • @realstyli Hey RealStyli, could what I have in mind work? With having the front cannons having shields that lower so that the cannons can fire while positioned under the wings of a gryphon figurehead? Or they could just be there under the wings of the gryphon figurehead holding a shield with the logo of Athena's Fortune and the green Reaper's Mark on Ramsey's necklace on it.

Yeah, could be something like that. I'm honestly open to whatever works aesthetically and in-keeping with the lore. I'm more interested in the concept of the battle between Ramsey/Athena's Fortune and Flameheart/Reaper's Bones. I think the main thing is that they are balanced as well as possible. They don't have to be identical, but evenly matched... kind of like Ryu vs Ken in Street Fighter.

Happy to hear. I agree the ships need to be equally matched too. I picture the ship having ghostly effects, but isn't outright glowing green and transparent the same way the ghost ships do. Need to allow living players to be able to stand on the ship after all. So this might be a bit more like the Ghost sets and a non-broken version of the Ferry of the Damned. But decorated with Athena and Legendary decorations and effects after all.

  • @arthur79474 Oh right, the Headless Monkey. But we can't visit below deck of that ship, and doesn't seem to take damage no matter how much we get hit while using it in the Monkey Island Tall Tale.

  • @realstyli Still wondering if Grog can work with Poison, Rigging, and Anchor for the Roar of Curses. But now I'm wondering if the ship should have blue, green, gold, purple, and black as the colors. But now I'm wondering more about how we can replenish the ghost crew. If we gotta get Skeleton Camps as well, would we need ghosts to try and stop Burning Blade players inside the Skeleton camps? Not entirely sure how this would go honestly.

The hadouken fire from the Burning Blade doesn't affect the defending players' abilities to move, so I don't think it should be the case here. The poison would match the health loss from far, roughly, so I feel that's enough on its own with other ship effects.

But now I'm wondering if the ship should have blue, green, gold, purple, and black as the colors.

I was thinking more of a ghost galleon.

I imagine they'd come up with another way to do it that doesn't involve the skeleton camps. After all, Flameheart is only after the Ancient memories from the orbs for nefarious reasons.

I wanted to give the ship a solid form, like it's made for both ghosts and living players alike. And I didn't want the ship to be completely glowing. But yeah, there might be another way to get the ghost crew replenished. My original idea was completing Skeleton Camps have ghosts summoned to the Athena's Fortune/Blackwyche in return for protecting the Ancient memories. But if we need a new way, hope we can find a good one.

As for the Roar of Curses, I thought players didn't have trouble moving when hit with a grog ball. So how bout a nerfed version that just blurs the vision and causes vomiting in addition to the poison effects? Kinda like when eating raw meat or bait.

Also, since the roar of curses cannot set an enemy ship on fire, but curse them instead, what effect do you suggest to use against the Burning Blade in addition to the poison curse?

  • @RealStyli Got another idea that I think is a perfect fit: have the sails with a glowing green Reaper's Mark inside the Athena's Fortune shield for the main sail. With the other sails having the usual Athena's Fortune mark. Would be a great way to reference Ramsey's necklace and the logo of the Sea of Thieves series.

And another bonus to the Athena's Fortune man-o-war would be that it could help count to killing skeletons with cursed cannonballs thanks to the curses it throws that can kill the Obsidian Skeletons onboard with the venom ball effects.

  • @arthur79474

I haven't really given it that much thought, to be honest. I find when making suggestions that it's best to just give broad strokes and let Rare's team figure out the details if they like it. By getting too granularly detailed, it's less likely they'll use the idea... even though we give away the rights to an idea by posting here.

  • @realstyli Good point. I just hope Rare can consider adding an Athena's Fortune man-o-war in the future with curse front cannons and immunity to curses in the future. Would love it if the two ships can hourglass against each other as well as I said before. Not sure how it would be formed though, but I would love a new Sword of Souls or a purified original to help with that.

  • Remembering this again, and now I'm wondering if we can use the Orbs of Secrets from the Skeleton Camps to summon Ghosts in return for stopping the rituals. We need to be able to sell those orbs to Athena's Fortune regardless though with how it plays the Athena theme when we stop the ritual.
