Teleportation while spawn camping

  • I just ran into a player that repeatedly teleported while I was fighting him. It was only one member of a crew. They spawn camped me 3 on 1 and i managed to kill two right away. The third suddenly disappeared and reappeared directly behind me. Nothing I did changed his position, he was always behind me. I respawned three times and was killed each time by someone who again suddenly disappeared and reappeared behind me. Has anyone else ever seem this? Its the first time for me.

I don't have a problem with losing fair and square but this PC hacker stuff ruins the game.

I came back for revenge after my ship sunk and the same player suddenly appeared on my ship when his ship was still too far away to cannon shoot over. Once again he suddenly vanished and reappeared behind me. I quit the game after that. There was no fighting back against him. He remained behind me after vanishing no matter what I did.

Xbox only servers please. PC is a promising platform but the cheaters will forever be a problem.

  • The opt-out-of-crossplay option is coming, so with a bit of patience you'll have that option soon. It sucks when people cheat... Definitely report the player, record a clip of it if you can.

Not all PC players are cheaters obviously. But yeah, cheating is horrible..

It can't come soon enough. It's too bad that cheaters are too common in PC gaming. I imagine that most PC players aren't cheating but that doesn't make up for the few who do. I never saw anything like this before. My only previous bad experience was with a player who could seemingly see me from behind hills and large rocks. That player just seemed to be a little too psychic. I did see a hack on YouTube that explained everything i witnessed from the first suspected cheater but this teleportation thing has to be new. I can't find any videos of people doing anything similar.

The sad thing is that I have a nice 2,000.00 gaming PC I never use for multi player games because of the cheater problem. The greatly inferior Xbox at least doesn't usually have a hacker problem. The lower performance of the Xbox is more than made up for with a general guarantee of fair play.

  • Two of us had this happen. Player appeared from nowhere. No ship, row boat or whatever. We managed to kill him then moments later he’s back. So yes, teleportation does appear to be a thing sadly.

It’s been years since I’ve gamed on a PC but isn’t cheating in just about every online game? XBL is a good place.

  • @winter-fritz44

    1. Opt out is coming
    2. There is also quite some videos of xbox players cheating in SOT so getting rid of pc players will not fix the hacking issue
  • Its possible this was bad lag. You can see players "teleporting" during the Battle for LA event stream, but really its probably just really bad packet loss.

No. Even with severe networking performance issues players still have to get from A to B. The hack is quite well documented and widely available for PC.

I realize there are hacks that can or could do this at one point, however it is still possible to have players appear to be teleporting due to packet loss or bad lag. Interpolation can be incorrect if it loses a lot of data, and players will snap to current position once they receive updated info.

EDIT: There's an example in the official event stream highlights, which was on hardware provided by the event, at around 9m50s. Watch as Supa954 teleports slightly from the back right part of the ship to the left side.

  • @winter-fritz44

This can and definitely does definitely happen due to server lag. I'm not sure why people are jumping at the cheating conclusion.

  • @chronodusk Its important to report cheats, and I believe there are still working cheats, but the cheat accusations are getting a little out of hand. Some guy a few hours ago nearly lost his mind trying to claim cheats on players appearing inside his ship when his own stream clip showed the enemy boarding via the ladder.

Not everything is cheating even though you may not know exactly how it happened at the time.

  • @d3adst1ck

Exactly. I've never encountered a player I suspected of cheating, point blank period. Exploiting with Macros sure, but never cheating.

And if they were, they weren't doing a very good job of it.

  • @chronodusk

Easy way to scapegoat Pc Players and justify opt out. People like to say cheating is common on Pc, but it really isn't. My entire Pc gaming career I've maybe run into 2-3 a year. Nearly every game on Pc that is multiplayer has some form of anti-hack security, or at the very least something to detect it. Most get banned right away if they do.

It's honestly probably bad lag. If that's cheating then everyone is cheating.

If the player has walked to a different location, but the server is delayed on visually communicating that movement to your client, it is going to make the player appear to be teleporting once the communication from server to client catches up... This is nothing new or out of the ordinary.

Let's take the tin foil hats off, Sea of Thieves is not running rampant with teleportation hacks or invincibility or whatever... Cheaters make up probably less than half a percent of this playerbase and are banned swiftly.

  • @princes-lettuce sadly it won't be the cross play we want it's going to be input cross play so cheaters will still be alive and well using a controller on pc

  • @nabberwar Yeah I know, it's a shame. I'm staying away from the crossplay debate, but yeah I hate that saying "cheater" is the default way for players' to scapegoat their losses on anything other than their own lack of skill.

I get what you’re saying exactly. If we were talking about players moving several in-game meters then your immediate assumption would be lag. We all experience it, know what causes it and how it manifests itself. That isn’t what’s being discussed here. We’re talking about a player that had NO possible chance to appear where he did legitimately. Someone that covered several in-game miles (assuming he spawned on the next island over) in perhaps a minute. Sadly these darn hacks exist and there’s always some people will use them.

  • You only need to see any of the multitude of videos on YouTube of how to run hacks/cheats on SOT from a PC.
Watch any of them and it might explain some of your encounters..
It's happening to players more and more.

And that is why i no longer bother to play in adventure mode.. I'm not spending hours of gameplay for some cheat to log into to my server and be able to spot my ship from any distance, then be able to tell what i have onboard, not to mention be able to shoot me through decks as my players box is always visable to them, even where i will respawn.. The list of woes goes on.. What's the point?

Sadly, this is the reality of this game now. Players use cheats and as a normal gamer looking to enjoy the game, you are at their mercy.. Happy Play Indeed!

  • @needsmokes

Er! I didn’t know they could do all that.

That’s it then. We should all lobby Rare to make this an XBox exclusive 🤨.

Presumably these hacks can be traced to the client IP and a big fat ban imposed.

OP was not talking about that. OP was talking about a player teleporting from in front of him to behind him - roughly the same distance that you can see the player in the Battle for LA stream "teleport". This will happen on servers under load or with players with spotty connections (either you or the enemy). That is definitely not hacks.

If there is video evidence of players teleporting from miles away, it would be interesting to see and it should be sent to Rare. Most of the time you can attribute things like this to just not being completely aware of what is happening. Just because a ship isn't nearby doesn't mean there are no players; You can drop off at islands, or the back of a boat, and swim pretty far.

I don't think I've encountered more than one cheater in the entire year I've been playing, and even then I was questioning whether it was actual cheats or not but I reported anyways. I've seen video of cheats, so I know they are out there, but they aren't as common as people think they are.

  • I can easily go in to my router and hit the lag switch for my xbox. No PC required.

Edit: xbox is basically a PC with a different OS

Good luck there.. Microsoft sees this as a play anywhere title.. It's a curse that will make this game suffer the longer it goes on.
And i really hope they can track the players using foul play methods, but you know how it goes.. Shut one down, 10 more spring up..
We all know the answer.. But dare not speak it as thread will be closed and directed to mega thread>>>

  • @winter-fritz44 so, not sure if you're looking at your post but I noticed nobody asked you this yet.

Did you record what was happening and send in a support ticket to Rare to help them track these said "hackers/cheaters?"

If not, I suggest you do this from now on when you see something happening in game and you're not sure if it's just lag or not when it comes to pvping.

  • @needsmokes

To be fair, they're getting barraged with questions about the cross-play opt-out. I can understand the frustration of those who want the option as they were told it would have been available by now, but the cross-play opt-out advocates have done everything short of demanding Rare drop everything to implement this.

It's no wonder you get directed to a mega-thread, as this question gets asked in dev-streams and on Twitter all the time. They know you want it, and they're working on sorting out the matchmaking flow for it... What more do you want them to do?

Also, this topic should be closed. Here's why... This user posted about another player cheating. These always get derailed into a crossplay debate with people senselessly saying that all PC players are cheaters, the nonsensical suggestion that SoT should be Xbox only... It just devolves into this every time.

People accusing others of cheating should be advised to make a support ticket and have their topic closed down. Because nothing else can be done about it other than a report by the user, and investigation by the developer.

Crossplay opt-out is not a solution to cheating, don't fool yourself into thinking it is.

  • A simple sword-dodge (block+move+jump) will quickly get you behind an opponent. Not many players realize this, but it can also be used to pass through your opponent. If done correctly, it might seem like teleportation when it really isn't.

Last paragraph. He described what we witnessed.

Anyway, I’ve seen this first hand and wasn’t alone. We had two Xbox in the same room so two pairs of eyes and ears.

So he came back towards the other ship after being sunk. There's no possible way that the other ship would have seen him approaching from a long way off and swam out ahead to intercept and then boarded? Again, there's no proof here and its entirely possible that nothing out of the ordinary is occurring but sure go straight to hacks as an explanation.

All future first party titles will be play anywhere and on PC game pass. I think most if not all will have crossplay, too.

  • @marsmayflower

Play anywhere isn’t play together. It looks like crossplay won’t be enforced.

Commercially it couldn’t be. We have millions of XBox users paying for safe, secure and stable online access. Force them to play with people that don’t pay - it’d be a braver man than I. Also this cheating thing could really mess things up. I don’t really care about hardware differences but some do. Unless MS scrap the XBL subscription then forced crossplay just wouldn’t fly for all sorts of reasons.

  • @winter-fritz44

I seriously doubt you run into hackers as much as you say you do. I seriously doubt anyone runs into hackers as much as they say they do.

Your situation could have been completely due to lag and your story is full of holes.

Hackers are less than 1% of the player base. LESS than.

I've seen packet loss and lag in this game and it causes people to seem as if they are teleporting. Even in the Arena but it wasn't hacks. It was just lag. I've seen players go from ladder to captains wheel instantly. Its not hacks, its lag.

You went to go take your revenge and you argue that the ship was too far for a cannon shot? They could have swam towards you before you even got there. Maybe they did shoot over and you just didn't hear it and then he swam the rest of the way?

I've ran into maybe 2 or 3 hackers since the game came out? Thats 2 or 3 in over a year. Dude, trying to say that PC hackers are ruining the game is just a bunch of hot air, especially when xbox can hack as well. Less than 1% are hackers yet how is it that only xbox players run into these hackers, and how do you guys run into them ALL the time?

    Shenanigans.

  • @xultanis-dragon Get out of here with your logic, this is a thread to scapegoat the PC boogeymen to further an agenda. Shoo!

P.S.: The day people will come to genuinely and objectively report a real cheat and not a "it kinda looked like it could have maybe been a cheat if you squint your eyes" sort of situation just for the sake of blaming a whole console playerbase, maybe those threads will be taken seriously. In the meantime, lag and inattention is most likely OP's culprit, and this thread a poor attempt at trying to hurry up crossplay opt-out I guess?

  • I myself still haven't witnessed any hackers or cheaters since launch, just really skilled pirates and sometimes lag. I'm an xbox player aswell, (would LOVE to play PC 😋) and I still have so much fun on the game despite all BS there has been, I'm still sailing along doing anything I feel like in the game bcuz it allows me to decide whether or not to be the bad guy or good guy.

You see. It's all a choice. Every bit of the game has free choices on whether or not to do things, it's just our job to record and report anybody doing things that the game does NOT allow.

Again, like I said before, if you think something is out of place, record and report to Rare. Coming onto the forums about cheaters and hackers is pretty much a waste of time and more or less a cry for help that nobody here CAN help upon, besides give feedback and suggestions to the problem.

No I didn't record the incident. It's not like I expected to see this. So far this is the only time it has happened. I've seen lag before and this wasnt the same. Lag makes a player appear and disappear yes but only over very short distances and not exclusively behind you. This player hacked at me from behind and remained there no matter what I did to turn and face him. In each case he started out in front of me. I got three good cuts on him before he teleported behind me the first time. I even tried jumping back to the map table thinking it might dislodge him but that didn't work either.

They weren't particularly good at the game. They missed with every cannon ball they fired and I managed to punch enough holes to put their ship dangerously low in the water. Their attempt to gang up and spawn camp lost them two crew members. The third player didn't start teleporting until after I got those first three cuts on him.

I posted because I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this. Whatever hack this was placed his character behind mine and couldn't be dislodged.

Lag doesn't conveniently place you behind another player and make it impossible for him to turn and face you. Everyone has seen lag before, there isnt anything unusual about it. As far as skill goes none of them seemed to have very much. A solo player generally can't cut his way out of a 3 on 1 spawn camp but it can happen to the crew I ran into.

They were terrible at maneuvering and couldn't seem to aim a cannon ball even at close ranges.

When the same other player suddenly appeared on my deck and did the same thing it became fairly obvious that something was wrong. I kept my distance and watched for swimmers like anyone else would. I wasn't even within cannon ball range when he appeared on deck.

As much as I say I do? Do you think you know me or something? This would be two for me.

I know what lag looks like. Virtually everyone who plays video games has experienced lag. This player vanished and appeared behind me. After that he became impossible to turn and face. Unless Luke Skywalker taught him to use the ways of the force well enough to mirror every move I made perfectly its fair to say he was using a cheat.

The first suspected hacker I ran into months ago always knew exactly where I was from behind rocks, hills, cave walls, etc... Yeah it's fair to lag probably wasnt the issue there.
