A question about Tall Tales and toxic players.

    Guys, the expansion is looking so good, and I can't wait to play it but I'm going to be honest here and ask this question:

    It is going to be possible to play and, actually, enjoy it?

    Almost everyone that wanted to enjoy recently launch content for any kind of online game had the same problem: Campers, trolls, toxic players, etc.

    A lot of players were waiting for content like Tall Tales, narrative content for SoT, finally. This is going to be an adventure so good, so epic, at last! story! And I hope, I really hope that it is not going to be impossible to play or to enjoy due to those reasons. And this is related to the new gameplay feature that Rare is adding too: Fishing.

    I've played WoW for almost 13 years, and a word came to my mind: Fishing at Stranglethorn Valley, if someone that plays WoW knows what I'm talking about, that is the thing that I'm worried about Fishing in SoT. Some people would like to spend hours catching some fishes, it is so relaxing, but then you get raided by 12 Horde/Alliance players and they start to camp you. And the thing is that the classic toxic player will do the same thing in SoT while you are fishing.

    I know that The Arena is comming too, and it is going to be so cool, but The Arena is PvP content and Tall Tales is narrative PvE content completely and I'm certain that there is going to be people that would like to destroy the adventure experience for the ones that just wanted to enjoy it.

    It's going to happen. It happens every time Rare introduces a voyage/campaign into the world that sends players to predictable locations. There is always going to be someone out there trying to spoil someone else's fun. It is the crutch of MMO type games. Just avoid said players, block them, and move on. Or just sink them and move on.

    @axiomwizard I always enjoy this game, even when I'm unlucky and got sunk and lose some treasure...that's part of the game

    It will happen, though it will be difficult for a camping crew to anticipate the locations the small handful of crews on your server will want to visit. Some locations may be more likely, but a crew would have to hide in a cave (or wherever) for hours before someone else showed up. From what I have read, most of the locations for the same tales are not the same for every crew. It is far more likely, like with people accused of outpost camping, that a crew is already at the location for their own reasons when another ship arrives. I am not saying it is not possible, but it would take a very patient crew to pull it off. The upside is, many of the past story locations were not randomized and most everyone who wanted to complete them found ways to get them done. Location camping will probably happen but it just won’t be effective at completely stopping players from completing it.

    @axiomwizard Calling someone toxic for playing the game the way its is meant to play I would say is being toxic...

    Even today during the live stream, Rare stated that you could meet up with other players and see how the story unfolds. Yeah it will suck when you are on the last part of the quest and you sink and have to start over. But thats part of the game. It will happen to me and I will learn from my mistakes.

    Now you say well they should stop attacking me when I tell them I am doing a tall tales quest. Well no, they don't know what you have on board, you can tell them anything and have 3 athenas chest on board... This game is expose to make you feel nervous.

    Now, if they are actually being toxic/trolls, spawn camping without sinking you, calling you names more then just fair trash talking then yes call them toxic, but dang this community is getting to the point where any type of PVP is considered TOXIC.

    PvP =/= Toxic

    Well in World of Warcraft (make note of the literal name of the game here) you could always just have fished elsewhere like in the stormwind canals or whatever instead of catching stranglethorn snappers and yes i know you have to go different places to lvl up but thats the point, that zone is contested and on a pvp server its going to be more risky, thats how its supposed to be and if people want to just relax they should go take a nap or something, not play a pirate game called Sea of Thieves or an MMO called World of Warcraft, design decisions shouldnt be made to favor the person who dosnt embrace the full pvpve nature of the game.

    I am totally open to some sort of mermaid parking mechanic, where you pay the mermaids to hide yor ship with an animation like skeletons ship respawns and despawns, and you get a conch shell that is your voucher that can be stolen from other crews, and either used to bring the ship back and check for loot or sink it, or possibly just hand it to a mermaid to claim any loot that was onboard and a small amount of gold that the other crew would then have to pay to retrieve their ship for losing the shell.

    @el-dth-taco Am I the toxic one for writing a post detailing on itself the ways people tend to be toxic? Please, show me where I wrote that playing the game the way it is supposed to be played is toxic or that PvP is toxic. If you didn't understand the point of this subject, please read again and comprehend it.

    Guess you can't comprehend your own writing.... so here you go what you said...

    You are worried that you can't enjoy the tall tales because of "toxic" players ruining it for you. So sinking you and "raiding" your fish is considered "toxic" in your opinion, from what you said. I am stating that these people are not toxic because they want to take your fish, or sink you during your tall tales....

    Did you comprehend that?

    I will be joining the crew of friends I have met over the years and delve into this together.
    So to me, there won't be much risk of being camped or whatnot, as I won't be going alone.

    The old guy in Zelda was right, it's dangerous to go alone!

    Well... I'm one of those wrong so-called griefers (since I'm a hard PVP player).

    I can't wait to stop PVP and get into this tall tales. And yes... griefers are gonna be all around. To me it's ok. That feeling of being threatened is part of the spirit of the Sea of Thieves.

    The solution is not to allow any suspect ship (or guys) being around. Tall tales mixed with some PVP is gonna be anything but boring.

    On second thoughts, using the rowboat is another great way not to be seen.

    You can stock the rowboat with food and you can cook in the islands to heal yourself. It isn't the most truly adventure mode, is it?

    I believe Rare already said that the locations in these tales will change depending one where other players are located on the map. It will send you to the furthest location from them so you enjoy the story in relative peace. It won’t be the same islands for everyone doing them.

    @el-dth-taco Please, reading comprehension dude. I love PvP, I've been palying WoW for years... am I saying that PvP is toxic? No. Is the PvP toxic in SoT just because someone stole my chests or sank my ship? No, it is the gameplay, the feature of the game, I've even had stole treasures from other players but also helped anothers with skele-forts, what I'm talking about, and explicitly talking about is toxic behaviour.

    If you can't read properly and comprehend the general subject that I'm writing about... I'm sorry for you, because this is not me "whinning about something" because I couldn't play, it is a community as a whole that plays and wants to enjoy the game. I believe that you, being a Founder/Insider have read posts of people that talk about toxic behaviour, abused game mechanics, etc and had given a possitive or negative opinion about certain related subjects. So please, if you are going to comment on a thread, aport something useful to it, not just point with the finger your dissregarment to someone directly.

    @guilleont I lost my ship once in a skele-fort, and traveled by row boat for almost one hour getting all the treasure that I could, it was hard, but that was awesome. Quite an experience.

    I've done a gilded athena voyage in a rowboat, hahaha. Hard mode with just one life to spend. Also a crewmate and I have taken a fort haul from an alliance of three ships... just with a rowboat and plenty of bananas LOL (no GP barrels).

    @axiomwizard it might happen as you state but a couple of things:

    Getting sunk (by player or ai encounter) is part of the games win lose meta, you win some battles you lose some.

    What i think the crux of the situation is, in my mind, that crews/players that want to just do PvE should be aware that there are crews on the seas that will shoot first and ask questions later.

    My crew started out as a PvE only crew @Nessiroj and me actually despised pvp, until we realised one simple thing: pvp is one of the dangers on the seas you will have to deal with, so lets get better at it. Even though its just for defensive purposes

    They said on the stream last night that if there are multiple crews all doing the same Tale, the game will send you to different islands so you don't have to contest the same vault.

    @phantaxus yeah, that's good news.

    At the end of the day, how this will go down when it goes live will depend on things that are beyond Rare's control. It'll depend on who is on a server with you and what their intentions are.

    It might be fine for some people, a nightmare for others. Eventually, I predict that everyone who wants to do these voyages will be successful and complete them. It might take more than one attempt on more than one server, but eventually you'll find a quiet server and be able to complete all the steps.

    The more hassle it is, the more rewarding it'll feel in the end. Just try to stay mentally strong and get back on the horse when you get knocked off.

    I think it's going to be pretty peaceful in adventure mode when arenas comes out. Its going to be pretty Boring imo.

    It could be good if you go in a separate server, where you cant counter other players and disturb you... Only when you do the main story... When you finish the quest you return in the main world

    @sunbro95 I have not read anything to indicate we go to instanced servers when we start the adventures. From what I have read we are always at risk of threats (environmental ones and other players) to our progress.

    Two things to point out.

    The arena is going to be way closer to PvEvP then true PvP. It's not some sort of battle royale mode or deathmatch. It is very much about the treasure as it will be fighting. So don't count on all the PvP crowd only playing arena.

    As far as the tall tales and fishing...if I were you...I would grab kegs and stock your boat before engaging in anything that is considered strict PvE. Never count on people to be nice. If some people sail your way and don't make their intentions clear from far away then take them out.

    Killing someone who is fishing is pretty low though. I have done some vicious things out there but I don't have it in me to kill a fisherman : )

    @sneakler I will be killing any fisherman I see. Those poor fish don't deserve the be yanked from their nature habitat for just a few gold pieces. These beautiful creatures deserve to be left alone and live their life! (Well that will be my excuse anyways :P)

    In their videos, Rare has shown that they will split up parts of the same part of story missions to be in different locations to both stop that from happening and for replayability. They are a smart team, they are on it :)

    Without giving too much away...The final voyage for Tall Tales is NOT split up among different islands. It takes place on the same island for everyone. You will also need to spend a significant amount of time there doing things. More than likely there will be other crews there at the same time. It's going to be an absolute bloodbath.

    Maybe... for a short time. Again, with only a handful of crews on the server, another crew would have to either be at the same island to finish the voyage or be patient enough to wait around in hopes that another crew eventually shows up.

    Some players and crews will storm their way through all of the voyages within the next 24 hours. Those are the crews that are the most likely to encounter one another IF they happen to be on the same server. Others players and crews may never get around to doing the voyages. Most players will not rush through all the tales as they fish, continue working on leveling up to PL or completing Athena voyages, play a few Arena matches, take out forts, work on commendation completion, and hunting other ships when the opportunity seems right.

    I am sure there will be players who happen to run into another crew and come here to post about crews camping their spots. The truth is, the other crew was probably there doing their own thing when their victim showed up. There may even be a crew actually patient enough to wait for some crew to show up, but if someone ever tried camping an outpost they would know it is incredibly boring and takes FOREVER to work out. Crews willing to do that will be very rare. Like outposts, there are too many tales to do (and variations within the tales) to guess with any certainty where another crew is going next.
