Powder Keg Skeletons

  • The spawn rate and sheer volume of powder keg skeletons really needs to be reduced. Pretty drastically.

Ive just returned to Sea of Thieves after leaving shortly after the Megalodon release and those skeletons are the most unfun, frustrating, disappointing thing in this entire game.

You turn around and three have spawned and are chasing you. You shoot and kill them then dig into the ground and two more spawn, you sprint away then fire killing them then return to your chest to finish digging it up. But wait, here comes another.

With how big the blast radius is and how quickly they move, they should be a skeleton type you see on the odd occasion. Not constantly. I've only been back for a few days but I get people leavibg my groups because theyre frustrated with those things. Or people refusing to do voyages in the volcano areas because powder keg skeletons just turn everything into a mine field.

I'd really like it if this was looked at. It's obnoxiously frustrating to play against and I just cant see any real benefit to it being tge way it is.

The game would straight up be better with less.

  • @steveboddy I don't think they're THAT bad, I just shoot the knees and now I have 100 gold more worth in loot, but I dislike them because they make the only viable weapon in PvE play the flintlock, they restrict player choice. My favorite weapon is the blunderbuss and thats just an impossible weapon to use against them, ya never know when they'll show.

  • @nefnoj thats a good point too. I just think when adding in mechanics it should improve the player experience and with how these have been implemented, it's kinda done the opposite.

  • They should make it so that the gunpowder skeletons take considerably longer to rise up out of the ground, giving you a chance to attack or run away. In this way, they wouldn't be so annoying, but could still surprise you from a nearby bush, for example, where you didn't see them claw their way out of the ground.

  • @steveboddy As they usually stand in the midst of the skelly crowd, they are a welcome aid killing wave for wave of them.

  • @goedecke-michel i never said to remove them. Just to lower how often they pop up. It's a bit overboard

  • @SteveBoddy I believe the frequency is changed depending on what voyage you are on. Have you been running athena or high level voyages?

  • It's not so much the frequency of them that bothers me as the speed at which they move. It wouldn't be so bad if they moved at the same speed players do when they are carrying something, but these dudes have zero chill when it comes to sprinting with those barrels. Slowing them down would make them a lot easier to handle. Them and sniper skeletons.

  • @Galactic-Geek has a very good idea.

There's a lot of unknown's about the spawn rates, and a bit of uniformity and a check-up would go a long way.
It's incredibly unpredictable going on voyages these days. I like to be prepared, but sometimes the game just throws strange, eldritch curve balls at you.

On a voyage last night with another sloop, I helped the guys clear skeletons on a very small island. Not sure how many were from a voyage, and how many were random, but by the end we had maybe 20 kegs leftover from the skeletons alone. It was pretty nuts, and they all spawned in no more than 10 minutes, one and two after the other.

  • Agreed. They make the game too easy and/or annoying.

I like this solution. Gunpowder barrels are big, so logically would take a while to get out of the ground. Additionally, it could give sword/blunderbuss users a chance to kill them without dying. Maybe make it so that if you kill them while they're partially under the sand, you have to use your shovel to dig the barrels up, without them being volatile until they're completely exposed.

  • @steveboddy

I know that they exist and spawn like crazy so I am always on the move trying to kite the enemies while using the sword.

I either pack the pistol or the EoR so that if they do spawn I will run; and kite them all into a nice tight pack World of WarCraft experience applies here, then once I have them all grouped up ill fire a single shot clearing the entire pack.

I consider them a useful mob to have because they help me clear forts, and island waves. They factually speed my PVE progress by a high margin.

When dealing with a combination of Rifle toting skeletons and keg skeletons its highly important to also utilize line of sight; meaning you can still pack them together but you need to run your rear around some corners so that they all group up, then make that quick shot with the pistol VS one of the keg skellies and you're clear on that wave.

Hope that helps speed your PVE way.

  • @galactic-geek They currently make a different sound when they come up. That's what I listen for. If I hear that, I start running to put distance between me and them.

    Me, I love them.

  • I would say that I have to agree that the spawn rates seem to be a bit high right now. It is funny, they don't spawn enough when you are working on OoS islands, but chest islands they are constantly popping up. Just the other day I was doing a map and I had to run to water after each dig, in some cases before I even got back to dig. And as the OP said, it is usually 2-3 at a time, so trying to shoot out the knees while back peddling doesn't work.

  • @bran-the-ent I know that sound all too well...

  • I personally love them, they're so much fun! They can also be really helpful in various ways. Speeds up killing captains and waves, if you get stuck on an island and can't move, or if you get like 5 of them in a train you can run around the island with Yakity Sax playing in your head and as you run by a teammate digging up a chest or fighting skellys and just yell out 'Hey, I found your friends!" and cut past them so that the pain train aggros on them and listen to the sweet sounds of explosions and getting called every name in the book.

But if you're taking it seriously and trying to accomplish something, they can be a pain. I'm looking at you, Crooked Masts. Still, I hope they don't change them though.

  • I honestly like having a bunch of gunpowder skeletons, makes skeleton forts easy, but I do agree. I think Rare should decrease the number of normal island skeletons that spawn with them.

  • What voyage are you using? I get almost none on 50gh but get 5-6 on athena

  • I really just think the spawn rates need to go down. The barrel skeletons are great. Seeing 5 every 10 minutes is beyond ridiculous.

Trying to do anything in the devil’s roar is atrocious right now. If a barrel skeleton spawns while the island is trembling - you ARE going to die. This wouldn’t be a big deal, but they spawn way way way way way too often.

The shear amount of barrel skeleton spawns make quests unfun. It’s seriously the only thing in the game right now that I absolutely hate and I think it is in dire need of a nerf.

  • I do agree that the gunpowder skeletons spawn way too often. Being sent to the ferry, or taking massive damage every few minutes is, without question, definitely not fun. Not to mention how it prolongs the voyages to ridiculous lengths - what should only take about 5 minutes ends up taking 20...

  • @cstrap actually I find them quite useful. All I do is run away turn and fire.. and they are eliminated quite easily. In order of soul missions especially in devils roar.. you don't even have to fire most of the time.. you just run around and place yourself between them and a geyser and they blow themselves up. Or run to the water let them gather and kill a bunch with one shot. Maybe set your spring button to something other than the thumb stick to make it easier to run away.

  • @ram2k14 that should have said sprint. not spring.. he he..

  • Another issue is that you need a ranged gun to defeat them, and your ammo is limited.
IMHO, the keg skellies should be glass cannons. 1 or 2 shots should defeat them. Its ridiculous that they sometimes need 3 or even 4 (body) shots to defeat.

  • I like the bombers, they are fun.

But seriously, they spawn at a ridiculous rate! Had to fight at the top of a peak last night and if ran them down the peak they respawned on the climb back up. If suicided they respawned on way back up

Suicided one time and found two bombers waiting st the ship..

Took forever and atleast 20 deaths to kill the four skele bosses purely because of the bombers. It just got boring and repetitive.

They are fun and great addition to the game but seriously that spawn rate couldn’t have been intended?

  • Spawnrate of barrel skeletons needs to be tuned down.

    People saying, free barrels yea.
I been doing athena voyages last week, its common to spawn 3-4 barrel skeletons at once and they spawnrate is like EVERY MINUTE !

NO! Don't tune them down. They are the fun part of these voyages.

  • @ram2k14 they are for sure useful during order of soul quests, but for literally anything else in the game it’s just annoying. Yeah, I agree they are easy to deal with and avoid, but I don’t want to deal with them as frequently as I do. That’s just my opinion though.

Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE the addition of barrel skeletons. I think they are great! I just think they spawn way too often.

  • @cstrap exactly. I have no issues with them existing. Theyre useful and give the game a bit more depth.

There's just way too many of them.

  • @steveboddy yeah this is a bit of a problem the spawn rate especially on Athena has been reported complained about since launch

the only way for rare to address this is if a streamer makes it known then maybe rare will listen as it's been near a year and nothing got done done

  • @crimsonraziel Sure they are fun, but its not fun when you blow up 5 barrels and 3 more immediately spawn.

  • @the-tonkinese Since launch? Of the game?

    Great ideas mates, I approve!

  • @bran-the-ent for the high spawn rates yes for the gun powder skellies since their launch yes

  • I'm not a fan of skellies coming out of the ground with a powder keg. Imo, it would be better if there were random kegs laying around in certain places, and skellies came out of the ground empty handed, and then had to pick them up, and then run toward you.

  • @grindtony45 I disagree.
