Did the spawn rates of megs and kraken go down?

  • I've been solo slooping for the past two hours or so between the Devils Roar and The Wilds and I haven't seen a single megalodon or Kraken. Did the spawn rates for them get reduced, or is this something that only affects solo sloop players? It really stinks because I'm trying to get the commendations with zero luck. Rare, can you please up the spawn rate?

Not that we know of and there's been no patch since the release of Shrouded Spoils, so I would keep hunting, they're out there!

  • Ran into 3 megs yesterday but haven't seen a kraken since day 1.

  • My brig sailed completely around the map last night looking for megs, and not finding ONE! By the end of the night we were firing cursed cannonballs into the heavens and sacrificing live pigs off the boat to entice her from the depths. Still nothing. We ended the night by scuttling a fully stocked ship and getting drunk in the tavern.

    B.O.R.I.N.G.

  • I've been having problems finding either of them since the update dropped, might just be bad luck or maybe they are attacking some other ship elsewhere? I assume there can only be one instance of either one at a time.

  • Aye, I'm approaching hour 3 of no megs, kraken, or even skeleton ships. Not a single one. Rare, up the spawn rates please!

  • In my experience, megs are more likely to appear during a fight, and the kraken when you have a lot of loot on board. So, get into a fight or go treasure hunting and see if they appear.

  • @killthulhu19k No Karen sounds normal but no Megan at all? I feel like I get 1-2 Megans each play session and 1 Karen every 2-3 sessions lately. It would be interesting to know the spawn rate numbers.

  • @killthulhu19k I was wondering that myself yesterday. Haven't ran into the Kraken a lot and let me tell you I've played a lot since SS came out.

Meg though I've noticed might be lowered? I played for about 6 hours or more yesterday and only seen 1 meg. Used to see 1 going to a fort, going to an outpost, just basically me going in any direction to any destination would net me that infamous rumble. Now when I hear the rumble its just my stomach because I'm lactose intolerant.....why is cheese so good.....

  • I've also had a tremendously awful time finding Megs and Skelly ships, and Kraken spawns are extremely rare as well. I didn't assume it was just me. They need to fix this. I'm looking like a fool when I convince someone to come play because everything's different now and I can't find a single thing on the entire map. I feel like some servers get bugged and things stop spawning.

  • The other day, I spent an hour solo-slooping in the Devil's Roar. I did not get attacked by anything (which suited me that day), although I saw roaming skeletons ships in the distance. On other days, I have been on ships that have encountered Megs and the Kraken regularly.

I am not sure how an emergent threat RNG works. They could spawn Megs, Kraken and Skeleton ships at random locations and hope a player ship is nearby; but more likely it is triggered by the ship itself. Maybe when we sail past a "spawn point", the dice is rolled. If you "roll a 6" (or an N on an N-sided dice), the threat emerges. Another possibility is that there are not fixed spawn points, and the dice is thrown for your ship, every few minutes, when you are at sea and not close to an island.

I do suspect the different kinds of threats are on different RNGs which is why you may sometimes get a Meg and a Skeleton ship together, say. My guess is that if the game decides to spawn a Meg, another RNG is used to determine which kind you get.

However it works, all that can be guaranteed is that – on average, in the long run – you will encounter a given Meg (or whatever) X times every 24 minutes (24 hours of game time). However, sometimes you will "roll a 6" several times in a row, meaning you will meet threat after threat in a single play session. On another day, you might never "roll a 6" and never see a thing.

My point: Your mileage may differ!

There is little point in complaining that you see the Meg too much, or that you never see a Kraken. That is what Rare have their telemetry for.

  • I've run into lots of Megs in the last couple of days, as well as a couple Krakens (killed my first Meg solo this evening as a matter of fact).
I think it's the luck of the draw; sometimes I only see one, other times, I can't go a few miles without an attack from one or the other.

They're probably attacking me, lol. I get them at least once on every trip.

  • @surveyorpete I think your suspicions are probably close to dead-on.

  • I wonder if the platform a player is using plays any role (not that it should, mind you).

  • I hope its the dice system.. last times i played it was like 666 the number of the beast and in a couple of hours im gonna start a new voyage so i should have a good chance of the boring turn without a single 6 ^^ im going for a chicken record cuz im 4 days free :D

  • If its triggerd by sea miles or spawn points then my game is a nightmare. after filling cargo i continue do merchant deliveries to all outpost only pitstops delivering a couple of chickens, snakes and contrabande so i make a lot of miles and hit all the sweetspots -.-

  • I don’t think they did, I was attacked by the kraken 3 times on a solo sloop within 2hours. One time with nothing on my boat, the other two with chests. It may have something to do with how much loot you have on you = higher chance. Atleast it allears that way...

  • Yup i just sink again -.-
2 hour struggle to get like 15 snakes en 15 chickens.. got attacked by 3 megs in a row pushed into a storm crashing on a skullfort blown overboard died respawn screen kept loading so i was too late to bail water and its to far to save them they will now drown :( gave my ccb's away on ghostship to pirates and quit.. i dunno whats up with sea of monsters lately -.- its the pink ones they friggin hate chickens somehow

  • My experience changes from session to session.
The first week was really busy, lots of spawns etc. However I have noticed a huge drop in these last few days. I have played 3-4hrs per day and not seen a Kraken and only a couple of megs.

I guess it's just the luck of the dice to be honest.

  • Well im playing again now and this voyage sofar 2 yellow megs they dont attack, 2 krakens! The first i shot one tentacle and quikly turned out of the area and escaped, the second kraken got a sloop so i wend in and shot two tentacles from a distance and the sloop escaped then we killed my first kraken and i got spices, thea and a chest out of the water and offered it to the sloop but then a red meg came when the pirate was checking my cargo and we pistol whipped the meg together :D i accidently shot my new pirate friend and turned in the loot and even just escaped s silver meg.. now i finally reached plunder outpost and turned in a little loot yay :D

  • Kraken's are considered a server-wide event just like cloud events (skeleton forts or skeleton alliances) meaning only one can happen at a time (the fort of the damned is a server-wide event but it is a player triggered event so does not count prevent other server-wide events from occurring) as for the megalodons they are more likely to spawn when you have loot on you and can't spawn or go near islands, seaposts or outposts so if go between two regions the likelihood is that you spent too much time near an island, seapost or outpost or someone else on the server was spending more time then you away from islands, seaposts or outposts.

    Hope this helped.
