Whirlpools! would you like to see them? whirlpools that will suck boats under, and how some of them will outright take you to a ancient underwater fort covered in sea weed and plants under the ocean! At the least this would make for a wonderful environmental hazard for Sailing and Battles! just some of my idea! what do you the community think it should be like? !
Ocean Whirlpools(Maelstrom)! would you like to see them?
@cptasseater how and where would u want them, and how would would you like them to interact with the ship? should it be in a storm, or maybe scatter randomly poping up throughout the map?

The link you posted is of a Maelstrom, far more powerful than a mere whirlpool. xD
But yes, i'd love to see Maelstroms in this game! :)
@crackerjackx13 this would be awesome! We could make 6 spawn and using rng, 1 of them could lead to your Atlantis fort and the other 5 just outright destroy you, with the respawn mechanic now you would never know if someone died or was successful (without trying all 6). They all disappear when the fort captain has been slain. Same as your volcano idea you could add themed cosmetics, a ‘submerged’ themed ship with barnacles and seaweed draping down. New skeletons. I like this idea!
I've been talking to some friends about this as well and well all would like to see this in game.
Maybe have it slowly rip your ship apart faster and faster as you get closer to center. Hit the middle and it tears apart like you sailed off the map.
Spawn points randomly inside storms when they're completely in open water.
It'd make great ship battle stories to brag about.
@scoobywrx555 i like the iea of how it would change the kraken mechanics, or even if it was hidden by a storm. what kind of damage though should it cause though?
So real life whirlpools are not that big of a threat however the fact is that these holes that go nowhere exist and develop naturally seemingly in the middle of nowhere. I feel that this fact should negate any weirdness from just randomly finding one as it is a part of nature.
Whirlpools should not be overabundant, this is to preserve the wow factor when you find one.
Now since this is a fictional fantasy video game we have a lot more options to work with. Size, strength, looks, etc.. It would stand to reason the biggest and strongest whirlpools are found in storms but smaller yet still dangerous whirlpools exist elsewhere.
Here are some maelstrom types:
MINOR:
Size: Diameter of a galleon and a half, bow to stern measurements. (I'm throwing numbers out here)
Frequency:
------Most frequent of the whirlpools.
------Able to appear most anywhere even hugging islands.
Danger:
------If you sail directly with the current your ship is sped up by double.
------If you sail directly against or straight through the current your ship is slowed down by half.
------Current is moderately difficult to fight.
------Your ship takes mild damage if you go against the current's rotation for too long.
------Your ship takes moderate damage if you are at the whirlpool's center for too long.
------The whirlpool's center cannot consume your ship whole.
MAJOR:
Size:
------Diameter of 8 galleons, bow to stern measurements. (I'm throwing numbers out here)
Frequency:
------ Infrequent.
------Not able to hug islands.
------Located often near large rock formations.
Danger:
------If you sail directly with the current your ship is sped up by double.
------If you sail directly against or straight through the current your ship is slowed down by half.
------Current is difficult to fight.
------Your ship takes moderate damage if you go against the current's rotation for too long.
------The whirlpool's center causes immense damage to your ship.
------The whirlpool's center cannot consume your ship whole.
MYTHIC:
Size:
------These whirlpools are the size that you see in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
Frequency:
------ Very Very Rare.
------Not able to be near islands or rock formations.
------Can only occur in a storm.
Danger:
------If you sail directly with the current your ship is sped up by Triple.
------If you sail directly against or straight through the current your ship is slowed down by 1/4th.
------Current is ridiculously difficult to fight.
------Your ship takes immense damage if you go against the current's rotation for too long.
------The whirlpool's center will absolutely consume your ship whole.
The Red Waters: If you travel outside the map you will find that it is littered with whirlpools of all sizes. (This is assuming that they do not strain the servers too much)

@maximillianzeus Wow! i really appreciate you taking the time to write this all up, its very insightful and well put together! But seeing that this is game and not that sad looking maelstroms that really dont do much....where they go is a great mystery! what would you like to see in regards to how this would interact with the player, and where does it going when you finnaly get sucked in, does it destroy your boat? or does it go somewhere? thank you again for your very insightful well put together information!
@crackerjackx13 Thanks
I would say that both the Minor and Major whirlpools would simply damage your ship until it breaks and sinks. Players would get dragged under water and not able to escape.
Mythic whirlpools on the other hand would be big enough where a ship of any size would fall completely into the center. If a ship falls into the center the ship falls to its doom. All players die, the ship despawns, all treasure lost.
Now that is the practical answer, if I had a choice I would have your ship fall into the Sea of the Damned instead of despawing.
