PC Users Config File Changes; Share Your Findings.

  • So this guy Battlescones, I was a bit tipsy the other night and may have poked some fun at the fella but, he did make a legit post that got me messing about.
    His post can be found here...
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/50829/game-always-running-in-borderless-windowed-how-do-i-force-true-fullscreen/37

    So I've had a mess about this evening and changed a few things in the config.
    As is the norm with this sort of thing it's entirely open to debate and may even be placebo but if anyone else wants to give it a bash then please do share your findings.

    The directory/path to find the config file is as follows...

    C:\Users\Username\Appdata\Local\Packages\Microsoft.SeaofThieves_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Athena\Saved\Config\UWP64\

    *the Microsoft.SeaofThieves_8wekyb3d8bbw of your directory may have a different string of numbers and letters following the Microsoft.SeaofThieves but you will still find it within C:\Users\Username\Appdata\Local\Packages

    When in the correct directory/folder open the GameUserSettings config file with your favourite text editor, it should open with Notepad by default with Windows 10.
    Here's what I personally changed...

    MaxFPS=141 (three under my desired refresh rate to eliminate tear and vsync use)
    SmoothFPS=False (from True)
    FullscreenMode=0 (this was set at 2 which is Unreal Engine full borderless, 0 should be true fullscreen but, I'm no expert and may be wrong)

    Here's a full list of my config file after changes...

    [ScalabilityGroups]
    sg.ResolutionQuality=100
    sg.ViewDistanceQuality=3
    sg.AntiAliasingQuality=3
    sg.ShadowQuality=3
    sg.PostProcessQuality=3
    sg.TextureQuality=3
    sg.EffectsQuality=3

    [/Script/Athena.AthenaGameUserSettings]
    MaxVerticalResolution=0
    MaxFPS=141
    VSync=0
    LightingDetail=4
    ModelDetail=4
    ShadowDetail=4
    TextureDetail=4
    WaterDetail=4
    SmoothFPS=False
    ShowPerformanceCounters=3
    bUseVSync=False
    ResolutionSizeX=0
    ResolutionSizeY=0
    LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeX=0
    LastUserConfirmedResolutionSizeY=0
    WindowPosX=-1
    WindowPosY=-1
    bUseDesktopResolutionForFullscreen=False
    FullscreenMode=0
    LastConfirmedFullscreenMode=2
    Version=5
    AudioQualityLevel=0

    When done, as is the norm, save your config, exit the text editor and then right click on the same config file and select: properties, general tab and tick Read Only and apply it.

    Share your findings here.

  • @keasy3 I also have been fiddling with these settings.

    I was having some stuttering issues with the game. After I turned SmoothFPS to False the stuttering went away.

    I also attempted to force native fullscreen using FullscreenMode=0 but that didn't seem to do anything. From what I understand, 0 is for native fullscreen, 1 for windowed fullscreen, and 2 for windowed. I'm pretty sure at this point that native fullscreen is disabled in order to allow other Windows 10 features to work overtop of the game such as the "Game bar" and notifications.

  • Well start the down voting now cause im gonna go ahead and say it. Pc players can alter multiple graphics configurations to suit there needs and wants. And with a little thought possibly there advantage. Can we get optional cross play yet

  • @keasy3 Damn, no dice I tried turning smoothfps off but still the same issues at thieves haven. FPS divebombs. It did help on the fireplaces in the taverns though. It must be a vsync issue like others have stated.

    @FRANK3NST31N-69 Nope, cross-play foreva!

  • Although in an ideal scenario, FullscreenMode=0 would indeed enable exclusive fullscreen on UE games, in this case it does nothing at all cause UWP apps have no access to exclusive fullscreen (by design, thank microsoft for that).

    The goodish thing is that UWP 'fullscreen' is not just a mere borderless window mode either, in a way we're even lucky they eventually patched it to allow vsync off, since it was originally locked to on.

    I've been fiddling with the .ini file since alphas and unfortunately many common UE variables are just locked or revert to the default values if one tries to change them, which is pretty standard with UE games where the actual game engine .ini files are stored in a encrypted .pak file and an external .ini file only accepts a limited set of variables/values.

    @FRANK3NST31N-69 you're lucky one can't downvote anything on this forum ;)

    @AdeezlFoSheezl SoT has a recurring problem with vsync: even if you disable it in game, it will randomly revert back to on. The best thing you can do is to force vsync off from your nvidia/amd control panel and it'll stay off the entire time.

  • I don’t have the ability right now to play around with this but do you think changing the view distance figure would help with the ongoing issue of items not rendering in until you’re basically on top of them?

    I’m talking about animals, chests, crates - PEOPLE. Not islands, trees or rocks.

  • @Tyburn-Ketch Unfortunately there's no access to those settings from that .ini file :(

  • @super-poopsy

    Damn it!

  • @Tyburn-Ketch i used way more colorful expressions at the time, but that's the gist :)

  • @adeezlfosheezl Same here!

  • Console gamers 5 years ago: "PC isn't really any better than console, bring on the crossplay, I'll show them what a controller can do"

    Console gamers now:

  • I be reporting ye all as hackers!!!

    Yarrrr... not really, I just be bitter because me Box o' X have no such functionality. It may be a little dishonest to mod yer file for an advantage but as they say...

  • @awesomecoreusa it's really just a manual way of changing things in the in-game settings menu.

  • @tommyhangout Ye can colour me ignorant. I've no been a PC gamer for coming on 10 or 12 years.

    I didn't mean to question the honour of those that be in the config files. I'm sure ye all be just tinkering, such is the way o' the PC Pirates.

    All that's being changed is graphics. There is no advantage there (doesn't change draw distance or anything like that). Plus we are trying to get true fullscreen this way instead of windowed boarderless. Its no fun to have your mouse randomly start clicking the taskbar which in turn stops you from doing anything ingame for a few seconds.

  • @alarthon aye aye, I already admitted me ignorance on the subject. I was going for glib and light-hearted, I didn't mean to impugn anyones honour.

    I no be looking to invoke the wrath of the m*********e.
