Sprinting and Walking is not intuitive on PC

  • One issue I'd like to see addressed for PC is the clunky Run & Walk functionality.

You may or may not have noticed, but in order to Run or Walk, you have to first be moving. (Well duh, but it's really not like that in most games.)

I can't imagine this is intentional, or it wasn't picked up by their technical testers. but it's not very intuitive to most PC players. We're used to being able to hold down Ctrl or Shift before we move, and you can't do this in Sea of Thieves. I feel like this was a small oversight due to the fact the development team probably tested this to see if it works, more so than if it's intuitive. Even knowing this fact however, I still have difficulty using them. It's like having to change gears from neutral just to sprint.

It makes movement feel clunky, especially in combat when you either stop moving or get knocked back. Or you're trying to sneak around in a bush without running out of it. I believe the solution is to just to remove the velocity requirement from sprinting and walking, and add a 'Toggle Run/Walk' setting. This way, I sprint so long as I hold Shift, and I walk so long as I hold Ctrl.

(Here's a quick 1 minute demonstration if you're not sure what I mean)

  • Yes especially when you want to walk it's very annoying!

  • I only found out about the walk key when I miss clicked xD I find it useless and I have never used it

  • @rogue-sea-dog All the inputs feel like that on the pc unfortunately, a lot of button presses go ignored if done slightly too early. I did a big post on it ages ago but doubt anything will get changed. It just feels the most basic of amateur programming. Ill link it anyway https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/35677/buttons-and-general-control-scheme-tlc

  • @uvg-reign I absolutely couldn't agree with your post more! Please, keep bringing this up because you're not the only person who has noticed these issues.

  • also resets when changing terrain, like when you step on stairs. It really is bothersome just like that I cant crouch but can do the sleep emote to hide my gameTag.

  • @lars-von-laser Absolutely. I don't really see the purpose of slow-walk aside from Roleplay value, since a crouch and sneak would be 10x more functional, intuitive, and useful.

  • @rogue-sea-dog Although I do agree with everything being said in the thread up until this point, there is one need to walk and that is counting steps whilst holding the compass. Other than that a crouch or sneak walk would be awesome.

Takes a tiny bit of practice to figure out how much movement = one pace. I always get the paces and treasure on the first try with keyboard, its not hard

  • @nanach I suppose but why not have it all? Games dating back to 2002 "Metal Of Honor Allied Assult" had all but sneak. Walk, sprint, walk/sprint toggle and crouch.

  • @admiral-rrrsole @NaNach when you got the compass out, press the button that holds it up close to your face and it counts paces for you if you didnt know

Yes, thank you , I did already know that but does it also work when running?

I dont think you know what i mean, when you hold the compass up to your face, it forces you into a walk and bobs your screen up and down like an exaggerated walk so you can easily count your steps

edit: its either holding down left or right mouse button cant remember off hand while the compass is in your hand

  • @uvg-reign cool, thanks for the tip

  • @uvg-reign Yes I use that technique all of the time.
I just thought you may have overlooked this, the one time walking is essential.

No, youre thinking having the compass out then pressing ctrl to walk to count paces. You really dont need to, you get the compass out, press the mouse button that holds it close to your face, then press 'w' to go forward and it does all the walking for you making ctrl completely redundant.

Please for the love of god go into a game and follow my instructions lol :)

  • @uvg-reign No ("for the love of god"), please don't tell me what I'm thinking or doing.
I hold the compass to my face (right mouse button) and it virtually counts my steps for me. You can hear the footsteps in the sand plus see the movement.

We are both talking about the exact same thing, just not getting our point across. lol

Fair winds and happy sailing to you.

  • @admiral-rrrsole hmm ... you saying that walking is needed as if having ctrl binded was a necessity for that reason, then asking if the compass worked while running threw me off even more xD so confused but least all cleared up now
