Pirate Legend with around 200+ hours - My Thoughts and Suggestions

  • A Little About Me
I am LukianDarkblade, most people call me Luke or Lukian. I played this game right off the launch time for the US and have streamed every minute I have played in the game up to hitting Pirate Legend. If you're interested you can check out my Twitch Channel here. I have been looking forward to playing Sea of Thieves since seeing it at E3 in 2015 and was able to play a little bit of the alpha and betas before launch so I can say I have a true love for this game even in its current state so hopefully not much of my post will be biased at all.

    Ship & Player Respawn
I know we have just seen an update on the ship respawns but I think it could be put even further than it's current state. Instead of just outside of View Distance it could be a random location outside of view distance. That either being further or closer to the view distance of where they last sank. I don't think that's a huge deal though since I haven't had any problems since the change was put in place.

A problem with player spawns right now is that even after their ship has been sunk they still respawn at times right where their ship was or is still sinking. I feel that after the audio queue plays to signify it has been sunk they should not respawn there anymore. I'm sure this may be playing more off of the fact that their new ship has not respawned yet but it is tiring to have people spawn back after sinking them at a fort.

    Weapons
One thing that I feel could be changed on all weapons is the knockback being on every weapon to being only on the Blunderbuss and Cutlass unless you're on a ladder.

    • Cutlass - Currently the only issue I see with the Cutlass is being able to block infinitely against multiple opponents while they just swing forever unless you are lunged which can still be dodged by sidestepping. This isn't a huge issue since there are ways to counter it if you're a good player but can get annoying.
    • Flintlock - There's a couple of things currently wrong with the Flintlock. One is that if you have the Ferryman Skin or the Ebon Skin you will have iron sights which makes aiming at a longer range so much easier. While this isn't a huge issue and more of a preference to me since I use the Flintlock the most is that I think the damage could be pushed up a bit more at close range but nothing like a one shot.
    • Sniper - I'm not completely sure how the damage is on the sniper since I never use it and rarely see anyone else use it which is really the issue. All the sniper needs is the ability to change the scoped sensitivity and I'm sure it will be a favored gun for a lot of people but at this point in the game, it's like not having the gun in the game at all. I know the devs have said they're working on this so that's a good thing, I would just like to see it sooner than later.
    • Blunderbuss - Right now the Blunderbuss is probably the most used weapon in the game because of the fact that it can one-shot other players. I see a couple of changes that could help it. One is a change in ammo from 5 shots to 2 and with that changing the damage it does from one shotting to doing about 75% to 90% of someone's health each shot as well as increasing it's range from touching someones face to maybe 1 foot away which isn't anything insane but a shotgun shouldn't be a long ranged weapon.

    The Kraken
Right now, I'm sure for most who have run into the Kraken a hand full of times or more can say that after the first fight against it, you've seen it all and it's just a waste of time from there on. I know for myself and my crew every time we run into it now, we let out groans and sigh as we move our sails to the wind and wait until we're away from it. I have heard of the "Cursed Chest" that was swallowed by the Kraken in the lore book and i'm not sure why it's not some kind of loot that we can get already.

Here's what I think would be a good change right now in the game for the Kraken that I believe wouldn't take much work if they have the art already done for that chest. First thing, add some sort of time limit to the Kraken fight so that you have to be quick on your feet to kill it. Another thing, just have it constantly wrapping the ship along with your ship getting holes while wrapped and not wrapped, along with fixing the tentacles not actually sucking people even though they are playing the animation. After all of that if your crew was fast enough to beat it then a loud deathly audio queue would play and a chest would float up that you could only get from the Kraken along with a random amount of Marauders and Captains Chests.

    Trading Companies
Currently, I think there could be a few things changed around or even added to each Trading Company that would really help how everyone plays them and could more fit peoples playstyles. Along with the changes I say below, I do feel like the higher reputation you are, the better loot you get and it seems like that's how it is now but it needs a bit of tweaking/increase to make it feel much more rewarding.

    • Gold Hoarders - Something wrong with Gold Hoarders right now is when you get a quest most people will only look for maps that have a large number of chests on them and skip over the Riddles. I personally really like the Riddles and think they bring a different scene to the game that is really cool. Something I think could be added is the higher level you are then the higher chance to get a Chest of Sorrows/Grog or Captains Chests from Riddles. Since Riddles only give one chest I feel they should be a bit more rewarding once you find them.
    • Order of Souls - Currently the only issue besides loot at higher levels is having around 5-8 skeletons spawn all having Blunders or all having Flintlocks. I'm sure many people can agree they hate walking into an all gold skeleton firing squad and die before you can even eat a banana.
    • Merchant Alliance - A big issue right now with Merchant Alliance is how much more repetitive it is than the other two Trading Companies. I was level 50 in Merchant Alliance first so that was my most played and with that being said I have a really in-depth suggestion/rework that could help it out a lot. To start off I think you should get multiple requests at the higher levels to tell you to deliver at multiple places and have the time restraint actually mean something because right now you can really take your time even on the Legendary Voyages. The biggest thing I would like to see is an actual market that could be connected to all servers but not outposts. The market would have all supplies and give the ability to a crew to buy the supplies but gold would go to the merchant and other players could sell their supplies in bulk crates along with being able to buy and sell animals for people who don't want to capture it themselves they can buy and sail to the next outpost. The way the Voyages could be handed out would be when another outpost is low on a certain supply or animal the NPC's would have the player take the supply/animal to said outpost. Example: Golden Sands is low on Banana's and Red Speckled Chickens, Go find or buy Banana's and Chickens from Galleon's Grave and take them to Golden Sands in a certain amount of time.

    Skeletons
Currently, there are a few issues with how Skeleton fights work which make it EXTREMELY difficult and annoying at higher levels/Pirate Legend. One issue is that you can be stunned mid sword lunge/attack but when attacking the skeletons they cannot unless it's your third consecutive attack so when you have a group of skeletons attacking you it's basically impossible to attack back so you have to just run away. Another issue is after you stun the Shadow Skeletons with a light in the dark they will play a "stunned" animation but not actually be stunned so during their animation they will still shoot or hit you but you can't see it coming. The only other thing issue I can think of right now I already stated in the Order of Souls section.

    Skeleton Forts
I'm sure most people have noticed there are currently only 3 forts that spawn a skull over them and fill with Skeletons. Shark Fin, Keel Haul and Crow's Nest which makes that one for each biome. There are some really amazing forts around the map and to see a raid pop on one of them would be awesome but I'm not sure why the devs haven't done that with these other forts yet unless they're not completely ready or have other plans for these forts. I'm sure something is coming but I would really love to see something sooner than later.

    Random Ideas
Firstly, I would like to hear more about the "Live Campaigns" that are supposed to come to the game that was talked about early on before launch. I'm sure a lot of other people would like to see new ships as well and I personally would like to see a Man o War style ship with up to 6 people and have cannons on the second deck that you cannot see where your shooting and have to rely on your crew to tell you when/where to fire.

    Mermaids
There's not much to say about Mermaids besides not letting other crews see your Mermaid which will help a lot with people trying to be stealthy on an island or swimming to board a ship far away. This may even fix the bug of random Mermaids swimming in the water until your whole crew is on the ship.

    Last Thoughts
I'm sure there are some things I may have left out because I have had a ton of ideas along my journey but I hope you enjoyed reading through this post whether you agree or disagree with the things I've said. I can say I really love this game, even after putting so much time and grind into it but I am coming up on the end of the current content available once I reach level 10 in Athena's Fortune and I would love to see more to come that will keep me playing. I can feel myself getting burnt out and not seeing any content pushes me to find something else to play. I will stick around the game for a while in hopes they give me more to do!

If you have any questions or comments on the things I have said or things I have seen/done on my travels please leave a comment and I will reply back when I see it.

  • Any tips for merchant grinding?

  • @lukiandarkblade There's some pretty good points here. I'm feeling you most on the Kraken, as I'm sure a lot of people are.

  • @rayfromjersey Questing with a higher level definitely is one way to help but doing voyages with golden animals really helps. I would recommend cycling through some voyages to get Golden Animals. Snakes are best, Pigs are second and Chickens are last. Good luck on your grind!

  • @lukiandarkblade

+1 for every single point made in this post.

Except for the part about the skeletons with blunderbusses/flintlocks.

    +1 trillion for that point.

  • @dredpiratedski Thank you so much! :D

  • @awesome-jam-man Yeah the Kraken needs more of a reason to be in the game other than being a waste of time.

  • @lukiandarkblade I agree with every point here, and congrats on the feat!

Out of curiosity, I'm currently 39/38/35; you think I can hit Legendary status by Sunday evening with enough grinding?

  • @lukiandarkblade Don't get me wrong, I've had some awesome moments with the Kraken, but it's more because of good timing than because I actually enjoy the encounter. Make your own fun and all that.

  • @kawaii-dumpling Unfortunately I don't think so. You're reaching the 4 hours per level point and the higher 40s are close to 5 hours per level. Keep up the grind and take your time. Have fun with it!

  • Nice ideas you should help me grind lol

  • @realkenny96 Haha, check out my stream. Most people that want to join my group hit me up there. If you have a crew to roll with already and want a Legendary Voyage I could also help you out with that though.

  • I think you have some very valid points and k would also like to see the eye of reach become more relevant.

  • @lukiandarkblade I like these ideas.

  • @corrupt-fellow Thank you so much! Happy you liked them. :D

  • I agree with pretty much everything you said. I mostly play solo and have a hell of a time doing OoS voyages when i have to run into firing squads.

The higher level voyages need to give better rewards. I'm tired of doing level 35 OoS voyages and getting only disgraced skulls.

  • I agree 100% on the merchant runs needing some kind of economy in a way that could mean a competiton to deliver scarce goods quickly (PvP trade race). Great idea!

  • @haydnsym45 Happy you liked it! That's probably the one I have put the most thought into.

  • Great suggestions, I agree with pretty much everything in the OP. Thanks for taking the time to write it down and post it here.

  • @lukiandarkblade No problem

  • @bluwolve Happy you liked it! I actually took a lot of time to try and remember everything I wanted to put in but i'm still sure I forgot some stuff.

Im 37/35/35 now what do you Mean by 4-5h per lvl im doing like 2 Levels in 4h right now is it getting so much worser? On 40+?

Mermaids need to stay visible. If they weren't every outpost would have a player at them just waiting for crews to dock. Visible as they are, they are a safeguard for attentive players.

    +1 to this as well.

  • @foxdie-sj Yeah the higher levels are what I'm talking about. It gets rough.

  • @vin-delanos True, they are also bugged and stay around until all of your crew is on the ship to make it disappear. Most people may not know this though so the Mermaid will stay.

I wasn't aware of that. So if two crewmembers are at different locations, off ship, their mermaids will persist at both locations until they are both on-ship?

  • @vin-delanos No no, Example: Your crew sinks another crew and the mermaid pops up. That mermaid will stay there until your entire crew is on board.

Isn't that working as intended? If you're off the ship at distance, then there should be a mermaid in the water.

    Or am I missing something?

  • @vin-delanos Yeah, you're missing the point. The mermaid stays even when your crew is near the ship and the enemy crew has gone.

  • @lukiandarkblade But how does that affect gameplay?

  • @vin-delanos You have no idea if someone is hiding on an island or not anymore at that point. You said the intent for the mermaids were helping attentive players know if someone is hiding at an outpost but when mermaids aren't disappearing properly it can create some confusion after sinking a ship. Before we found out the bug we'd always start searching for people who weren't actually there.

  • @lukiandarkblade Oh, I see.

  • #TheRealPirateLegend :-)

  • Lots of good ideas in here, I can agree with these.
