How Sea of Thieves shows me what is wrong with most game developers.

  • It's seems like these days developers only make games for the money or because a bigger company told them too. That's what sets this game apart from most others. Sure, the test have been a little bare in terms of content (the full game might be as well) but Rare have made great strides in adding new features and improving the game. Every time I play, I don't care what I do, I just want to exist in the world they have built. You can feel the love that they have put into the game. They genuinely want to make the game and make it good, and I appreciate that. It's sad that so many games today don't get the love they deserve while in development. It's not fun when you get hyped for a game because the devs and publishers spend more effort on marketing and how to milk the most money out of it over everything else. Only to buy it and see that no effort was put into it or it is basically the exact same game as the prequel. There are so few games these days that are made because someone had an idea that they loved or because a team wanted to make a game they think is fun. That's why, even if no one from Rare sees or reads this, I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you and all other developers like you for making games that you want to make and enjoy. So, in turn, we can feel that drive and love put into the game and also enjoy it. Keep up the good work, keep doing what you're doing and putting things into the game you love, and it will have a long and successful life. I hope the best for the full release and hope to be one of the first legendary pirate captains. See you out there.

  • Dilly Dilly matey!

  • Gotta say I expected the complete opposite in the post after seeing the title lol! I agree with your sentiments good sir and I hope I can put many more hours into this game, and that there will be many pleasant surprises to come March 20th!

Yup, I expected the same thing. Always nice to be pleasantly surprised.

  • Fully agree with the OP.
We need to applaud Rare for the work so far and let's all derail the 'negative hype train' and all who have boarded it!!

  • Definitely agree OP. I haven't felt this kind of care put into a product for a long time. I'm enjoying myself immensely and can't wait to get in at launch.

  • @avirex-idyll

This is why I pay little to no attention to what is shown or talked about in a upcoming title. Time and time again I've read about how this feature it suppose to work or how you can do this or that with your friends. Only to find out what was promised is a lie.

  • Honestly, this game was the first in a long (veeeerry long) time where I pre-ordered and got truely hyped. I love how they involve us as a community too in this development process to ensure a good and successful launch day where we all set our sails towards adventures. And I can't wait for March 20th!

  • One good exemple of that its the FIFA games every year players are getting worst experiences with more bugs and didnt worth the money spent.
Rare with this game and atittude made me a beliver again and also a Fan, keep up the good work and remember to listen to the community for good ideas

  • I’m agree with you when you say that it feels good to see all they put in the game and want to make it better by listening the community even if it’s not really surprising cause they talk about making a social sharing world game. Also probably because they are passionate with a good communication and cohesion in the team.

However, I think they put as much effort and time if not more, to think about how to get more money.
Just need to see all the goodies you can buy with sea of thieves logo ( art book, coin, card game, controller, t-shirt, figurine and maybe I forgot some other stuff) while the game is not out yet.

I mean the way they speak about the game in their video, with enjoyment and passion, all this hype since we know about this game and the way they maintain it, is probably a part of this merkating.

I really like rare and all the game they done and this last one will be even better for me, but I think they are not so different than the others when you talk about how to make you spend more money

  • And the fact they are doing so much testing and take feed back form every one tweaking small things for us that make a big impact. I have dealt with there bug customer support and they take it very seriously to get them fixed up. I love it.

Thank ye Rare fer th' pirate dome!
"2 ships entre, One ship leaves"!!
Fer these are th' rules o' th' pirate dome!!!

You must've missed the announcement that the outposts in the final version will have billboards with real-world ads. :D

On the surface I have no problem with this what so ever. Would you rather they include micro transactions for items that give you a big advantage over other players(pay to win)?

If they are going to continue to develop content for the game for years to come they are going to have to make doing so profitable. So many games expect devs to release a game and then continue to develop the game further with little to no further return on their investment. That simply isn't realistic.

My understanding is they are talking about adding content to the game and changing it well beyond release.

  • @lucid-stew Making a game just for money and making sure your game can make money are two different things. It would be stupid for any developer to try and make a game that wouldn't make any profit at all. At the end of the day, this is still a business and people still need to get payed. There are good ways and bad ways to go about it. So far, Rare seems to care about the player base and will handle microtransactions in an acceptable way. I am more than happy to support good developers that handle things the way they are ;)

  • Guys, it was a joke. :P

  • 👏SUPPORT👏CREATORS👏WHO👏ACTUALLY👏CARE👏

  • Thank you guys for all the positivity! This is how the community should be... You know, except when we are trying to murder each other on the sea

  • Well said comments regarding one of the most involved developers I’ve encountered. And that covers many years and many games...and more money spent than I want to think about. Well said, guys, well said.
