Current PvP is the Bare Minimum

  • Take away from this and you lose a great deal of the hype the average gamer has for your upcoming game. All the viewers clamoring for your game on Twitch, those days seeing Sea of Thieves anywhere between #1-5 most viewed game, having top streamers advertise your game for 8-10 hours a day and with praise and anticipation of what's to come... all of that goes away if you decide to take away from the PvP aspects of this game. Give LIRIK, Summit1g, CDNThe3rd or any big streamer a chance to complain about diluted PvP in Sea of Thieves and it's all downhill from there.

It's difficult to prove without polling at the source, but I can say with certainty that most people are viewing this game for the epic PvP encounters that are possible in all areas of the map. Voyages, while fun, are almost considered "downtime" in most streams. This is not to say PvE should be ignored... quite the contrary. It's just that the idea of limiting PvP for the sake of making some players comfortable completing voyages with less risk is counterproductive.

Please, Rare, don't give in to the demands of people wanting to constrain PvP to certain areas of the map. Hell... some people are even asking to eliminate it completely (aka "PvE servers"). If anything, most people are looking forward to what else is in store for PvP... not less of it. You're in a tough spot where taking a stand one way or another can cause an uproar, but I think you will catch much less flack by supporting and expanding open-world PvP in your game than otherwise.

  • Dude streamers and youtuber do not control the economy nor do they sway the mind of any real adult. If we like the game then we buy it plain and simple. Also you cannot nor do you have right to say people a playing for any of you preconceived certainties, the motivation could go from having fun with spouse or children to just enjoying the beautiful graphics. There is more than just pvp, It is personally my favorite part. I do agree with proceeding with the pvp content though, the weak are going to continue being weak, no matter what changes.

There's a reason for what you see in that tweet. You can't understand or don't want to... that's your problem. "Control the economy" lol

  • People seem more interested in the monitors than the game from that tweet.

Comments in the tweet are irrelevant, much like this exchange. My post is meant for Rare, not you.

Actually, as the game was first announced I was excited for the exploration and stories to be told, not the PvP. I consider myself a PvP player but I was really looking forward to epic quests, not the current "beta" same old fetch some items and deliver them quests. There is PvP in all other games, a great PvE would make it stand out from the rest.

With that said, currently it looks more like a PvP game than anything else and I think it's due to the lack and bland PvE content. However looking at intricacies of the game you can easily understand PvP is totally dependent on PvE as in terms of rewards. There's no point to PvP aside from looting chests from enemy ships, unless you like to waste your time in a PvP battle with no kind of reward. Which some do and that's all fine, but for that we should have a smaller map so ships would meet more often.

As for safe zones, I don't think we need them, mainly because you could ram your ship into an outpost and deliver the chest without even fighting for it. I'd love to have some community hubs to hang out with other pirates. A place to have fun, a city for instance, with a captivating atmosphere that would make the game feel alive aside from all the piracy because pirates weren't all about fighting, they would also have fun with other pirates when docked.

  • To me, PvP is an obstacle I "have to deal with" while playing SoT and is not even close to the top 5 reasons I enjoy playing this game, nor why I am looking forward to this release.

That being said, sometimes I enjoy going out to look for a fight when I have nothing to lose. And that, I believe is going to be a major pain point in this game when it releases. There currently is no downside to just sitting back and putting minimal effort to attack those that have done the work--there is only the upside of possibly picking up chests.

Ok, but you'll notice I mention the word "viewing", not playing. I'm trying to let Rare know the reason why the game is getting such traction on places like Twitch is mainly due to PvP. Your own reasons for playing the game are fine, but that isn't the point of my post.

For sure, PvE is going to need a hell of a lot more content for the game to thrive. I'm not against that at all and am looking forward to Order of Souls missions, for example. I want more and better PvE... I just don't want PvP limited to make it easier for a few people to sell chests. Griefers/gankers have and will always exist in any decent PvP game... I've accepted that and have decided to just play smarter than them.

This is a great idea and no one in favor of PvP in Sea of Thieves would be against this... as long as it isn't an outpost with trading company NPCs. Selling chests (i.e. earning gold) is part of the PvPvE game loop, so simply docking your ship shouldn't be a guaranteed sale. Outpost ambushes are a thing and there's no reason they shouldn't be. There's an argument for making it more difficult to ambush players, but most people complaining aren't suggesting this.

The rest of us? We're going to be looking for secrets and seeing what the game world has to offer.

A Kraken and a few cosmetic upgrades won't add much. There had better be one HELL of a lot more to come.

Yes, that's what I meant. A city with no quest related NPCs, and if there were any, they should only sell items so you could get voyages without having to travel to an outpost. You'd then have to deliver the quest item to a regular outpost.

  • @ant-heuser-kush said in Current PvP is the Bare Minimum:

There's a lot. You think the beta is everything? Rare already said they've kept stuff quiet so we can be surprised when we get the full game. There's no use in spoiling the fun if we know everything the game has to offer.

Cosmetic items range from the clothes you wear, your ship, any item you can use and the unique items from the factions. The Kraken is but one monster we know of, and we know nothing about it. You really think banana eating skellies and sharks are our only threats?

There are promises and that's not something that can be called as a fact. Even though Rare is not Hello Games, in a post No Man's Sky era everyone should be skeptical about developers promises.

  • Someone else may have already said this, but Rare has confirmed that they WILL NOT add safe zones or special PvE servers.

  • @ant-heuser-kush I've been following the game's development since it was announced. I know all about what is promised to come. Yet those are just promises and as we all know, promises and an hefty price tag $60 (€70 for me which exchanges to $86,50) do not bode well.

  • Bottom line is this. What was the only thing that could have made the best game in history (Witcher 3) better, PvP.
Make a PvE server for those who don't want to be served.

1000% disagree. Witcher was an amazing story with real consequence associated with choice. Having to worry about the asshattery of other players would have ruined the game. However, I would have been fine with a pvp arena setting using the games mechanics. Separate from the main game.
