I have no idea if this is in the works or has akready been proposed but what if...
Cursed chests such as the grog chest for example would..
Once placed onboard ship made the entire crew drunk until the chest was removed from the ship or cashed in, in addition if any enemy crew were to board your ship would also be affected leading to a big silly drunken battle onboard, how fun!
Possible effects of cursed chests
@homewardgnu3290 The idea of cursed chests is awesome :D
But something like getting drunk seems too... I´d say childish for SoT. But I think something like a chest when on your ship, there´s a storm around you all the timer, or another chest, that causes a lull around you or causes the wind to blow against you. You see, something mystical, dark powers and that stuff :D@jcmdeadpool Of course, but I think the effect of getting drunk or nauseous isn´t fitting for a "cursed" chest. I wasn´t talking about the drunk effect at all, just that a cursed chest would need something more serious. But thats just my opinion.
But I think those chests are a great idea and I hope it becomes a feature, with whatever effects the devs consider suitable for the game.@jonathangmerlin There already is a Drunken Chest that makes the person carrying the chest drunk. The main idea is to make the cursed chest a little more difficult to cash in.
@HomewardGnu3290 Although I do think a drunken ship chest could be amusing, It would create a real challenge to carry to a port so should be worth a pretty penny as a reward for managing to get it there...
Maybe instead of just the ship, Make it so if unearthed it takes effect within a radius so if another ship comes within range they are affected.
@its-stoobs There is? Damn I missed that one :D
But yeah, since I had no experience with that (just the effect coming from that barrel of grog) I might be wrong and it could be more fun than I can think of right now@jonathangmerlin Yup, You can see what it's like in one of the developer gameplay videos, They find one, Here is the link, Pretty funny. #PartyBoat
@homewardgnu3290 yes! id also like to see a "Poseidon's Wrath" chest, where a storm constantly follows around while you have the chest onboard
@jonathangmerlin there is already a drunken chest that affects the person carrying it. On top of that, somewhere a while ago I saw a chest of sorrows that is always crying. I'm assuming that one fills your boat up with water overtime similar to a storm surrounding you. I bet there will be one that causes skelly to spawn ON your ship too! That wouldn't even bee too hard to program in, just utilize the crew spawners.
As far as hope for types of chests: I'd love to see a chest that lights your boat up at night making it easier to be seen by enemies,or causes small fires on the ship that you have to bail with water. A shark chest that causes multiple sharks to follow you at all times. A chest of petulance which has a pirate's or multiple pirates ghosts come out who only plays drunk shanties until the chest is sold. And a chest of nudity that removes all your crew's clothes until sold! Those have some Rare type humor for sure.
Storm rider chest - generates storm waters around you possibly even full blown storm features, wind rain etc.
Deathly hunger - a chest that summons the undead but increases in value the more you kill.
The marauder - a chest that summons a wayward spirit who moves sails, helm, anchor or even unloads cannons or throws chests overboard.
Tempered skies - a chest that summons lightning in your area.
Madness - randomly creates permeable objects or npc's making you see things that aren't there; including rocks, ships or other people on your boat even skellies.
The beacon - lights up your sails for all to see.
The juggernaut - slows you and your ships movement by 30/50 %
Just a few ideas.
@homewardgnu3290 This is genious!!! The crew suffers a penalty or somthing and if you mix and match chests it gets worse so you have to be more cautious/strategic.
@stick-em-tree Not just being drunk though, maybe the wind becomes a bigger challenge and stuff that makes it more difficult.
Chicken chest: after so many seconds of holding the chest player is turned into a chicken for a short time and drops the chest. (Hot potato)
dead man's chest: When a character holds the chest all ammo, bananas, planks and cannon balls dissappear from the characters inventory. When the chest is placed on the ship all ammo, bananas, planks and cannon balls dissappear from the ships inventory.
Stench Chest: character continuously vomits on them selves while holding the chest. Creating green blotches on the screen impairing vision.
Shark Chest: draws an unusually large amount of sharks to the area.
I see a lot of cursed chest threads, but what if it was more? Why limit it to just chests? Why not have madmen skulls? The effect would be similar, but let the Seekers have fun with it as well. Hell, why not have possessed chickens?! How fun would it be to have a chicken escape it's cage and run around on the ship?
Sorry to double post, but I found a thread of mine that I posted soon after the alpha ended. It has some other fun ideas for chests and skulls.

@homewardgnu3290 How about a really tricky chest, like one that reduces the health of all pirates in the vicinity to the brink of death so any small bit of damage will kill them instantly. Then if another crew tries to steal it, the booty literally goes to the last pirate standing.
@liquickmetal Well that one would definitely encourage crews to improve their docking skills. Don't want to have to swim to shore or boat, especially with some treasure.
Chest of Clear Sight!
You place it on the bottom deck of your ship and it creates a glass-bottom boat effect.
You could stand down there and get a nice clear view of the underwater scenery below the ship as you mosey along.
Could be good for scoping out shipwrecks as well finding schools of fish for fishing, simple sightseeing, etc. That Kraken wouldn't have no where to hide!!! haha
Plus it'd be pretty cool having the whole crew playing music and dancing on a glass floor on top o' the sea! :)

As someone with thalassophobia (thanks Subnautica!), this chest would be the most crippling curse in the game. So of course this means I want it more than anything else for comedic value alone.
