The Barnacled Dread is pure torture to do on a sloop

  • The fight took roughly half an hour on our 2-man sloop and drained almost all our resources, despite the fact that we were way better stocked than usual. It easily took over 100 cannonballs to kill, even though we were also shooting it with sniper rifles. Making a boss a bullet sponge doesn't make it harder; it only makes it incredibly tedious. I would much rather have it be harder in terms of mechanics, but have half health, than what it is currently.

We were SO glad when it was finally over, it was just torture. In my crewmate's words "this is the worst boss I ever fought across any videogame. I'd do other megalodons again, but this one, never again". And I agree, we're NEVER EVER engaging with this piece of content again.

  • I think it takes longer if you keep hitting the armor plates and if they regen. This meg is way easier than the Feared Redmaw.

  • yea honestly neither of the fights are fun. though the barnacled is way better than the firemaw anyway. that explosion is devastating if you dont manage to cancel it or a bite. though last barnacle dread i fought because it happened to be near an island i was at.... i cant believe they havent fixed the ship flipping of those megs yet. it launched me from sunken grove all the way upto the sunken kingdom location off old faithful. i barely managed to grab onto an interactable to stay attached to the ship so i could repair when we landed. not sure if its because the meg was spawning a mob on our ship so it was waiting for us to level out as well which made the meg stay glued to our ship but when we landed it was back to circling us as normal so was at least glad i was able to finish out the fight... but man also forgot how useless most of the loot is. why is it not all huntercall and meg loot instead its just a mix of useless garbage with a few things you might actually need. they really havent figured out reward for effort involved

Do the purple vaults in the Roar to get the two Trident of the Banished and they MELT the Ancient Megs.
Raise Hunters Call - one vault will get you close to Grade V and then can hunt the critters.
One Trident gets you one Meg safely dispatched with a bit to spare.

I thought the Ancient Megs were particularly poorly balanced for solo and stopped tackling them.
The Tridents above finally got me my shark curse.

Did you miss a lot? Did you actually prepare? Spears against Megs = Quick win.

. It easily took over 100 cannonballs to kill, even though we were also shooting it with sniper rifles.

    That sounds about normal.

Making a boss a bullet sponge doesn't make it harder; it only makes it incredibly tedious

or thinking sniper shots against an "armored" Meg actually does anything :P

So you struggled with a Hard (meant to be) monster and are upset because it was "To hard" for a Duo sloop. 100 Cannonballs is nothing.

  • Spears/purple Tridents against megs kills them very quick. Mixel has been streaming this week showing him soloing them from his sloop.

  • Like anything in life, it's easy when you know how. The Barnacled Dread is easy once you know how. The Redmaw solo feels like Hell on earth by comparison to the Barnacled Dread when you first try to do it but once you understand what to expect from the ancient megs they DO become very predictable and very easy to beat solo providing you aren't attacked by a skelly ship or another player ship whilst trying.

Sail up to it, drop anchor, raise sails for optics. This will keep you from being bashed around too much. As long as you get two hits into the ancient megs as they charge a little in advance of them getting too close, they won't chomp. Use hunting spears, fire eye of reach shots and use cannons when they are lined up. Use throwing knives for the ocean crawlers that board to dispatch them quickly. Get ready to deal with fire for the Redmaw. Leaving one hole isn't a problem as long as you remember to bucket between tasks.

    You'll be fine!

At first if you don't succeed, try, try and try again!

Did you do these recentky though ? When introduces what you say is very true - I hated doing the Redmaw solo; I did one this update and it went rather easily down: no fires, no explosions, every time she went to my ship it was in my canon line.
However, did the Dread as a duo sloop and it took a lot of time and balls.
What may not have helped might be the Galleon close by that later approached us, so it might have been scaled up.

  • Even with a mastery over killing Megs, I agree. Between the two of them, Barnacled Dread has a LOT more health to chew through, without being substantially different from the other Megs.

BD isn't hard, but he IS tedious to kill, so even when you got the fight down and he's no longer a threat, he still feels like a waste of time.

  • @nantes4054 or we learn how they work and their weaknesses.

Barnacled dread armor gets one shot by harpoons shot from a cannon, subsequently shoot them in the places where the armor is gone and it goes down pretty quick.

Also when in a fight with a meg, raise sails and just turn in place in sync with the meg, it will allow you to cancel its attacks.

Also all megs seem to have a severe weakness to the poisoning effect of the new(er) purple tridents.

  • Do an Eternal Guard vault, and use the purple staff to kill it. You can do it in under 2 minutes.

  • Found Barnacle on map. Stocked at three outposts on way with spears and 400 cannonballs.

Took roughly 40min and I still had half my spears and 218 cannonballs left.
Solo is harder yes but if it wasn’t I wouldn’t even bother doing it. Game needs challenging elements to push players beyond comfortable zones

It has been awhile since I've found the redmaw, so it could have changed.
