Bad and Good

  • This season has definitely missed the mark... I think it was a long time coming and it was too late to change it maybe? Slamming the breaks, doing a U-turn and doing something entirely different and having us players wait would have probably been better than releasing what's here.

As a Beta / Day 1 player and speaking for a few others that I've played the game with since the very start, we are not bothering with this seasonal content. It's not about what you can get from the Bilge Rat black markets in exchange for doubloons after the reset or what can now be bought with gold in stores, as far as we can tell, the items being regurgitated on the black markets are just old free seasonal cosmetics so we don't care, some of us have most if not all of it already and none of those items have been hard earned or anything, we also have more hats and sails than we could ever want at this stage, for us the problem is there is nothing different or new to chase in terms of cosmetics, it's just an abundance of the same stuff but it isn't even about the cosmetics, the activities on offer feel really really samey, so for us it's not about what we can unlock from doing something, it's whether the doing of a thing is different or more of the same dressed in a different way...

These forums are a veritable gold mine for interesting creative ideas for SOT and it's all coming straight from the players who play the game and care enough about the game to be here in the first place to offer feedback and suggestions. Players have been offering up amazing ideas for years here, most of which seem to slip through the net and under the radar.

Sea Of Thieves really NEEDS to trim off the fat and filler and introduce some truly new experiences or interest in the game will continue to wilt and for veteran players, I predict a huge drop off for Windrose.

Suggestions, some of which have been pervasive on these forums for years:

    New region?

    New Monster(s)?

More story progression through Tall Tales and activities? (not time limited events)

    Jewellery? Earrings?

    The ability to merge curses?

    Player homes?

The ability to save cosmetic combinations on your Pirate?

    A survival game mode?

A rifle (musket) without a scope?

    A true single player boat?

Open Seas isn't something many people will likely make a whole lot of use of but I am excited to see what creative potential comes from it. I think a Golden Age of lore videos and Machinema movies could arrive with open seas and it will be interesting to witness what people create. We may try to make something using the creative freedom open seas offers too, it will also be a great way to have friendly training days with friends and acquaintances as well, setting up a Sea Of Thieves Dojo to sharpen our PVP, TDM and Naval combat skills! Open Seas is a great 'minor' addition to offer players a new and different way of engaging with the game and I think it's better to have access to it than not to have access to it BUT it won't help the state of the game as it's not 'really' the game...

I have my fingers and toes crossed that the Sea Of Thieves has a mighty come back with the updates that follow after open seas 🤞 and I'm looking forward to getting creative and seeing what is made with open seas.

Speaking only for myself and some of the friends I play Sea Of Thieves with, for the time being, we are not feeling drawn to play as often as we would like to be. Hopping on for the occasional quick voyage and doing a short session of Hourglass seems to be all that's waiting on that gorgeous blue horizon for us for a good while...

  • New region?

We got Devil's Roar, but everyone hates going there due to the volcanoes. Adding any new region, such as DR with any form of "hostile environment" would just end up as the same thing. And if they dont add some form of hostile environment to new regions, it will be boring because it will be like the rest of the sea.

    New Monster(s)?

We recently got the Ancient Megs, and after everyone got to know them, nobody does them anymore either. Also the fact players often complain about Skeleton ships showing up and attacking them, and Megs spawning to often spawn along with skeleton ships. Kraken is always nerf or buff to much.
New monsters would just end up on the same path..

    Jewellery? Earrings

Same problem Rings have atm, restricts you from wearing certain "gloves"

    Player homes

Depends on "where". So far, best bet is the Sea of the damned location. But again, this takes players out of the main game just to show off a house they build and decorate...but who really cares? You see a ship that does this already and nobody stops to check it out, they shoot and sink it.

    A survival game mode

    Never understood this.

A rifle (musket) without a scope?

    Pistol?

    A true single player boat

Balancing issues unless they already have a plan for this. I cant see any solo player really wanting to sail a ship with "less"

Well not "everyone" hates going to the Devil's Roar and you don't have to make an area's environment hostile like with volcanoes for it to not be boring, it just has to be interesting and new and that would serve as somewhere else to go and spend time and explore which means the other regions would be neglected for awhile but the more familiar regions would feel fresher to return to after having taken in some new scenery and spent some time elsewhere.

Ancient Megs are still Megs but amped up, they behave very similarly and look very similar too aside a few obvious differences and they were a nice addition to the game and I doubt "nobody" does them anymore, when I said "New Monster(s) though I meant "New" not variant or vamped up versions of things that are already there. Yeah if your solo and your fighting the Redmaw and then a skeleton ship also pops up, it's quite challenging! I understand the frustration with that, with a duo crew and above it's more than doable. The Kraken, personally I think it needs renewed and buffed, a kracken should be a far more dramatic and challenging encounter, not just tentacles.

    Jewellery? Earrings

Same problem Rings have atm, restricts you from wearing certain "gloves"

If you wear gloves then your choosing to cover up your rings, if you have long hair that covers your pirates ears you'd be choosing to cover up your earrings, if you wear a shirt or a coat your choosing to cover up your tattoos. If you wear a buttoned up short or coat then you would be covering up necklaces, if you have long sleeves your probably covering up bracelets, That's acceptable. Don't see the problem there at all.

    Player homes

A player home could be a separate instance not in the High Seas, doesn't have to be in the sea of damned. A little island with a house on it for each player is fine and when you are ready to leave you go outside, go to your ship, climb aboard and drop sail and dive. People do check out ships. I've had players comment on my trinkets and cosmetics and visa versa. Enemy player ships not so much.

    A survival game mode

    Never understood this.

People may like the idea of having something like a shipwrecked mode where they have to hunt and fish and stay alive on an island. Survival game fans would likely love to have the opportunity to experience something similar with Sea Of Thieves.

A rifle (musket) without a scope?

    Pistol?

Nah I was thinking something closer to the stopping power of the eye of reach but without a scope, obviously balanced with the other weapons.

    A true single player boat

Balancing issues unless they already have a plan for this. I cant see any solo player really wanting to sail a ship with "less"

Actually there have been YouTube videos published about this idea with graphics rendered to showcase what a single player boat might look and play like. Their example was more like a smugglers boat concept and not really built for head on conflict but rather to be evasive and sneaky. I know a lot of PVE people would like to avoid conflict and go around mostly unnoticed so they can just sell their loot. Firepower wouldn't be what their interested in as much, as long as they could hold their own against Megs and Krackens. Somewhere between a rowboat and a sloop would probably be effective and if your the sneaky kind of pirate then it would be good to have a covert advantage against larger crews with larger ships and more fire power and crew power.
