Sea of Thieves Detailed Tutorial

  • Lately when I play with beginners, they have absolutely no idea what they need to do when it comes to handling the ship. I have to explain EVERYTHING when it comes to shooting cannons, steering, and bilging.

Instead of letting these players aimlessly run around when they start, maybe there should be a simple tutorial on how each part of the ship works. The Pirate Lord can assist players into how to sail, fix damage on the boat, shoot the cannons and damage other boats, and overall give a better tutorial than the popups you see as stuff is happening.

  • Maiden voyage?

  • @ewokbuilder thats why i said detailed, so that you boot up a tutorial guide and the pirate lord tells you what to do in a real scenario (like if a ship is on you, the pirate lord tells you what to do)

  • @karminiumsot that’s what the skeleton ship is for.

  • @ewokbuilder it doesnt sink, so the pirate lord tells the player what they can get from sinking a ship

  • @karminiumsot I don’t think they need to explain that sinking a ship gets you that ship’s loot

  • @ewokbuilder think about the tutorial in Helldivers 2 as an example. It walks you through each function you'll need to perform in game in a very checkbox-based manner.

The Maiden Voyage is such a bad tutorial.

  • I know this probably won't be the answer you're looking for here, but when I was new and before Safer Seas was a feature, I watched guides from Phuzzybond, which helped me tremendously. New players will sink a lot, until they experience the game more. We've all been thru it, and with the addition of Safer Seas, it'll make learning much easier.

  • @sweetsandman

Really I think it’s just as bad or worse.
Didn’t teach me how to swap ammo, didn’t learn about then UI to pick stags, didn’t teach me how every mission has different ways to finish them. Not always the arrows
Didn’t know how to switch between first or third view. Didn’t teach me how to grab ammo from my own ammo pack

So may things one must learn yourself. Such as SoT
Gamers are so given yellow paint so much just to follow a path, one a games gets to hard they quit because it requires learning. Time and practice. Or even problem solving.

Many lack self awareness and you can’t teach that.
Such as this game can’t teach you every tiny detail because they always add something new. Nobody taught you how to do shrines, you just see a magical thing in the water.
Nowhere it says to swim down…into that deep dark water.

Nobody is taught world events require multiple rounds to win. It’s all about self exploring and no tutorial is gonna cover all that.

  • @karminiumsot yeah so sot players are genuinely the most unconscious group of people on the internet, they go through the maiden voyage and still don't know how to play the game, they'd probably think the pirate lord is evil and use their only means of offence w+m1 (rt on controller) spam

  • @burnbacon Interesting to hear that perspective.

My friends were waiting for me to finish that tutorial and then I hopped into a session and felt pretty comfortable with everything in Helldivers 2. Obviously some nuances, but largely I felt prepared.

Helldivers 2 is also probably a bad comparison because the learning curve is not nearly as steep as SOT's.

I kinda remember Remnant 2 having a decent (albeit lengthy) tutorial and that's a much steeper learning curve than SOT.

Point being, while The Maiden Voyage is very immersive and beautiful...it teaches virtually nothing...you don't even have to touch the helm once to make it through 😂

  • @karminiumsot Agreed, sot is a simple but incredibly mechanically unique game. Most players still think full turning their wheel should be the first and only choice on helm, and don't understand the importance of raising sails in combat

  • Old saying. “Practice makes perfect.”
No need to hold your hand ever step just to forget it afterwards or if you plan quitting anyways.

If learning the game is troublesome and reason for departure, maybe it wasn’t game for you?
