I think it would be cool if we had a map visible flag that indicated you are looking for, or wanting to give help with commendations/voyages.
It would work the same as the reapers mark flag, but the Athena's logo. You still take the risk of someone hunting you down and sinking you or betraying you, but if you're looking for someone to cooperate with it gives you a starting point to look for someone.

Players do not like to be marked on the map. And since you already mentioned, "Risk of someone hunting you down" you are aware why nobody will do this.Nobody willingly uses the Reaper Mark for this very reason.
If that were true no one would use Reapers or Guild emissary, but that isn't the case. I regularly see people using reapers mark when they're looking for a fight.
I agree that often you don't want to be marked on the map, like when you're trying to get loot back to sell. But when I'm looking to ask someone to sell my gifts, or to give someone my extra old boot, I do want to be seen but also not look like I want to fight.

Trying to attract ships is exactly what I'm looking for. I want people to come find me without raising a Reaper's mark/emissary that shouts "I'm looking for a fight". I want something that says approach me, I want to work together.
We have the white flare, and the alliance flag, but you still need to sail around until you happen to see another ship (and then most of the time they run from you before you can offer or ask for help).
If I raise an Athena's mark, I probably don't have any loot, so the motivation to target me isn't that great.
If I see you with an Athena's mark, and I have mine up I'm guessing neither one of us has loot or is wanting a fight, so hopefully we can work together to help each other.

You can do guild emissary too. If you don't have a guild, you could just look at these very forums for an accepting guild. Plus, having it raised would still guarantee a fight. Unless is peaceballs your opponent or makes your boat immortal you would almost certainly have to do some PvP while raising this flag. If thy doesn't bother you, then aye, this would be a good fit for your vessel. But if it does, maybe keep it lowered. Obviously they would have to add it to the game first but if it's an optional thing I don't see why not.
