Sever merge. Health bar. Hitreg. Jump registration. - rant.

  • So in this latest patch server merges were changed. I'm about to steal a stacked FOTD, and pull up to reapers to raise emissary. Only 3 squares away from the ship at the fort when... Server merge - and they're gone.

    I thought this update is supposed to make it feel "less dead" on the seas - yet instead when you're on your way to fight someone you're just going to be merged out now? This would have never happened with the old system. Feels MORE dead with that update after today's experience, and I'm sure it will happen again if this has already happening to me on day 1 of the update.


    I am so confused what goes on in your dev studio.. like the health bar has been bugged for months since it was updated to be more responsive - Which instead only made it WORSE. I think any other game company would have reverted back to normal until it was fixed (or not even released that in the first place). If you're on fire/poisoned you cannot see your health. It's very frustrating. Please fix.

    Do y'all even want people to play your game? This is like the easiest thing you could fix, even by reverting it back to how it was. Instead it has been MONTHS without resolution.


    It's time for another improvement on hitreg too by the way. You guys had an update a little over a year ago which did seem to work pretty well (not perfect, but alright), but it has seriously degraded again. Or perhaps it's an overall server performance thing.. Jump registration is also horrendous - and we've never seen an update for that EVER - however jump registration is almost as bad as having hitreg. So many times hit the jump button expecting to jump and shoot someone or get out of harm's way but instead get planted into the ground and teleported back. I've had times I press jump 3-4 times in a row and still don't jump and it's nauseating.

    Never played any other game where you can't jump properly.


    I've also seemed to notice a dip in performance right after you get a hit or a kill on someone. Like doing damage to players seems to tank server performance. That's when I seem to getting the most jump issues. (but it still happens regardless too)

    If you're on fire/poisoned you cannot see your health. It's very frustrating. Please fix.

    Jump reg is the reason I mostly stopped playing this game, I've had issues with it for years now. I have many clips of it happening, from before hourglass came out to recent.

    This games performance has always been ATROCIOUS since day 1. Input delay, lag, you name it, sometimes you switch out a weapon and expect it to shoot when it normally does, it does not. Bucket/hit reg, every item in the game reg really.

    Each time I play sessions of SoT back to back then stop and play any other game I am reminded of how clunky SoT can be at times. But we all have to adapt through the sludge that is Performance issues in the game and simply adapt to them.
    I gave up years ago having hope they would fix these core issues, they never did/do nor will do in the future.

    Too many times has it been Reported to Support by myself and others. Yet here we are.

  • Myself and some friends have been playing the game with this bug for 8 months and counting.

    Happens when on fire, poisoned, and drowning.


    Also there is still the merchant supplies bug that's been "fixed" dozens of times yet still doesn't work. The merchant still sometimes refuses to give the supplies or just straight up deletes your crate.. How about instead of the player needing to Claim the crate - just have the crate drop at the merchant's feet automatically when you purchase it so we can fix that bug once and for all?

  • Here's another bug for you. If you switch food types and eat - it won't play the eating animation. (Also I'm pretty sure it happens sometimes when not switching food types.)


    So imagine playing the game right, and you try to jump and instead it teleports you into the floor, then you get hit by a firebomb so you can no longer see your health, and so you go to eat some food, and it doesn't play the animation for eating so you're not really sure if you're eating or not. Then you try to switch your weapons but you have the bug that it won't let you swap weapons. Then you try to get food out of a barrel, but it says you already have food and you realize you have the bug that prevents you from putting items into or taking items out of a barrel. As you exit the menu of the barrel your Game Options Menu is now stuck on your screen and you are playing the game behind the now un-closeable Game Options Menu. You try a new server, you go to buy supplies - the merchant won't give you your crate.

    This is the average experience these days.

    (I am submitting tickets for these bugs as well by the way)

  • Update. It happened again. There were 2 reapers on the server at an active Fort of the Damned and I was on my way there when I got server merged out.

    What is this server merge change????? The update was supposed to make servers feel less dead but so far, I've tried to go steal 2 FOTDs and BOTH times got merged away.

    The update was supposed to increase player interaction, but in my experience so far it is the opposite. This NEVER happened to me before the update.

    Is Fort of the Damned just off limits now? We're not allowed to go there?

    Yeah that merge timing is actually rough.

    If you’re a few squares out lining up a play and the server just pulls the ship you’re about to fight, that’s kinda scuffed. Especially if they were stacked at the Fort of the Damned and you were already on the way. That’s the kind of situation where the game should probably just let it play out.

    I do get what they’re trying to do with the system though. Servers were feeling pretty empty for a while, so moving crews around faster probably helps keep more ships together in Sea of Thieves. The idea makes sense. The timing just sounds like it needs work.

    The health bar thing though… yeah that’s been annoying for a bit. Not being able to see it properly when you’re on fire or poisoned during a fight is pretty frustrating.

    Hitreg and movement stuff I’ve noticed here and there too. Most fights feel fine, but every once in a while you get those moments where a shot should’ve hit or you press jump and your pirate just refuses to leave the ground. When that happens in the middle of a fight it’s pretty tilting.

    So yeah I think the goal of making the seas feel less empty is good. They probably just gotta tweak when merges happen so it’s not right when two crews are about to fight.

  • Here is another bug related to the health bar for you Rare - It doesn't happen very often, but perhaps you could see how this would be frustrating if it was a real fight. The health bar shows full health however the player is 1-shot.

    This happens not only to me, but others I've talked to ever since the health bar update patch: 3.4.2

  • Glad others are having the health bar problem. Banished ancients were a nightmare.. Constantly poisoned and on fire but at full health till suddenly dead. Even diving to shipwrecks suddenly became risky because I had no idea on timing my life saving snack. This really only started happening to me recently.

    Not really seen the other problems but I'm always trying to avoid combat so they don't affect me much.

  • I've got another rant for you in regards to existing problems with the game: Micro-stuttering.

    Sea of thieves has always had stutters when turning the mouse on PC. You can see it most when strafing + rotating the character. I've heard this is due to the mouse polling rate which I guess is capped at 250hz and Mouse Smoothing (ironically) causing this issue. Please add 1000hz polling and an in game option to turn off mouse smoothing and allow raw input. Hopefully this will help alleviate some of the stuttering.

    What good is making your game look as beautiful as possible, if only for screenshots? Once you actually play you're teleporting and jittering all over the place. Imagine how disorienting it is to play with this stuttering.

    @BurnBacon: As with everything else in this thread - I am making a support ticket in addition to posting here. Please remember that this is a "feedback + suggestions" discussion. I am offering my feedback and suggestions on the game. What I HOPE to happen is for more exposure on the issues, and I HOPE the developers would fix the issues. Since it is my experience that support tickets really don't seem to do anything, but then again feedback + suggestion posts don't seem to either. Wishful thinking really. Seems better to acknowledge the issues than ignore them, pretend they don't exist, let them get worse. Hopefully there's a dev that cares about the game and can address. But you're right.. it does feel like shouting into a void - At least here there's players who can share their frustration so we can all shout into the void together.
