The Update I want

  • I used to play sea of thieves all the time with a group of friends and from the start we have been talking about what we would like added to the game. These are the things that we still wish for:

    1. Prevailing Winds/currents-

These would be routes marked on the map which would act like highways for the sea, allowing for higher speed/predictable wind conditions.

    if currents:
ships within the current would be pushed with its flow, allowing for travel in the direction even if the wind would normally work against the vessel.
    if Prevailing winds:
marked on the map would be a dashed, arrowed line showing a path where wind normally pushes in a particular direction and doesn't ever go more than 90 degrees from.

    Results:
Having reliable, high speed routes would draw players to follow particular paths and reduce some frustration of fighting the wind and making slow progress due to poor luck. Beyond this, it would allow for pirates to have areas of higher than usual player traffic. Where one might hideout and wait for a quarry to chase and loot.

    1. Boarding Axe:
A melee weapon similar to the cutlass but significantly slower that would be able to damage a ships hull creating small holes

    and lastly

    1. Ship variants:
A change to ships where each type has two different ways of being outfitted. One that trades speed for heavier weaponry (perhaps with rearward guns for defense) and one with higher speed but less weaponry. The difference could be shown with the faster ships having jibs (perhaps allowing for catching the wind at mor angles and requiring less fiddling. This would make ship identification a skill players would rely on to properly weigh pvp encounters

  • predictable wind conditions

Huh...you can already predict the wind.

Having reliable, high speed routes would draw players to follow particular paths and reduce some frustration of fighting the wind and making slow progress due to poor luck.

and easy way for chasers to catch ships or runners to get away.

Question-- If I choose to trade speed for weaponry, does it mean my sloop gets a cannon removed, as well as brigs and galleons?

-- If a ship is fast but has little weaponry, wouldn't that cause players to run all the time, not having much chance to defend themselves?

    • This idea of a galleon trading weaponry for speed, sounds like it will benefit the galleon quite remarkably. For example, if my galleon now has 3 cannons on both sides, it's already rare for us to have all 4 cannons firing at once (I can't remember a time that's ever happened), so I can definitely afford to lose one if it means we can catch ships running from us, and with the current boosting our ship, we'll have no problem.
  • I think I imagine the faster ships having the default cannons, with the slower ones having rearward guns or potentially chasers. Making slow ships ideal from more peaceful players as they would be more capable of defending themselves while fast ships would be ideal for players who want to catch and loot others.
