Doubloon reset is not the way.

  • Apparently Rare is doubling down on the doubloon change https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/182227/doubloon-currency-developer-update. I am beyond frustrated, not because I will personally lose doubloons, but because of the reasoning behind it. The justification given is that both gold and doubloons have lost their value over time because players are hoarding them, so the solution is to reset those currencies. This is the result of a cosmetic-progression game that has steadily stopped adding meaningful cosmetic progression. This situation was created by Rare, not by the players.

    We currently have:

    • Shops filled mostly with recolors, while many unique sets remain incomplete (for example, the Jacket of the Damned).

    • A prestige system that, after level 100, rewards you with only a single ring every 100 levels.

    • Very few cosmetics for Hourglass, which requires an enormous grind.

    • Guilds with 1,000 levels, where after level 80 there is essentially nothing meaningful left to earn.

    • The majority of truly unique cosmetics locked behind the Emporium, FOMO events, or season passes.

In a game built around cosmetic progression, players hoarding currency is clearly a content problem. Resetting or devaluing doubloons does not fix the source of the issue, it is just another band-aid solution. On top of that, the handling of legacy cosmetics has been extremely inconsistent and, frankly, disrespectful. We were told that cosmetics would “tell the story of your pirate” and that time-limited items would remain exclusive. Many of us stressed and grinded to earn things like the pirate legend plunder pass rewards under that promise. Yet now some of those items return, while others, such as sails, scars, and tattoos that were objectively easier to get, remain unavailable. Even more confusing is the selective reintroduction of sets like Bone Crusher, while items such as the drum of the deep (which has already returned for an event) are still being gatekept. To be clear, I am not against older cosmetics returning. In fact, I would prefer everything to be available. What I strongly dislike is arbitrary favoritism with no clear rules or reasoning.

The community response to this doubloon change has been overwhelmingly negative. If this change goes through without addressing the underlying problems, it will feel like Rare is ignoring the root cause while punishing players for symptoms they did not create. And honestly (this is not a threat, just a statement of reality), if this goes live without those issues being meaningfully addressed, I will stop playing.

Sea of Thieves has lived long enough to become the villain...

My best guess is that they will reintroduce all Cosmetics you could earn back in the days by completing the Bilge Rat Adventures. Bone Crusher (at least the clothing & weapon set), Mercenary ship set, rifle & blunderbuss, Wandering Reaper ship set …

On the other hand I expect theme-based cosmetics like the Hungering-Deep stuff to remain exclusive.

But who knows for sure? At this point I seriously would be surprised if anyone at Rare knows where the game is going.

True. That’s exactly what they‘ve said. More than once actually.

I’m more curious about the thought process and logic (if there is any) behind what comes back and what doesn’t. For example, why do cosmetics from the bigle rats qualify, but not items from adventures? Will the bonecrusher scar and tattoo return as well? I would argue that since we already got a recolor of the clothing set, gatekeeping those would be kind of silly. When it comes to season passes, getting pirate legend back in the day and reaching level 100 is not the same as getting a scar that was on level 10 of the plunder pass. So why does one of them stay exclusive while the other doesn’t?”

There sure are a lot of people who are negative about this, on the other hand, Falcore's video about why the doubloons should reset has 1,7 k opvotes and the SoT one 1,8k.

Also, why just don't post this on one of the already existing topics about doubloons, e..g. https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/182227/doubloon-currency-developer-update ?

Those are really good questions and I‘m afraid I‘m as clueless as you are. 🤷

I stumbled over this one as well:

Will the bonecrusher scar and tattoo return as well?

If I recall correctly, the Bone Crusher Weapon and Clothing Set could be obtained via doubloons from the Bilge Rats, while the Ship Set as well as said scar and tattoo were bound to the release of the Cursed Sails Update.

So according to my own theory - which really isn’t more than a guess, honestly - then every cosmetic which was bound to doubloons will make a return while themed stuff won‘t. Which would mean, that at least the Bone Crusher Set would remain unobtainable to complete for every player, that didn‘t take part in the original event.

But maybe it’s got nothing to do with the way cosmetics were earned during the early days. Maybe they just release all locked items that are tied to a whole set?

In my opinion Rare needs to do a better job explaining those things.

Likes on a video by a popular content creator or company don’t necessarily mean that people agree. If you read most of the comments, even on the videos you mentioned, they’re negative, with only a few neutral ones here and there. Also, I thought I had already posted in the existing topic, but I guess I never hit submit...

  • I think the biggest issue with the announcement was that they announced it with half-baked details.

    Had they said
-"here's how you're going to be able to earn doubloons after the reset (basically more details on this "Bilge Rat Weekender" thing)"
-"here's what cosmetics are going to be returning to the black market"
-"there's also going to be NEW cosmetics coming to the black market and not just a bunch of returning old stuff"
-"here's what the "time limited" cosmetic mementos for doubloons are going to be and how much they're going to cost for those who are sitting on piles of them"

Instead, they delivered literally the only the part of it that would for sure have any negativity surrounding it and gave virtually no details on the other stuff.

So, it's not surprising that there's backlash.

That said, I couldn't care less that they're being wiped after the mementos are released. I'm just excited that there's going to be some reason to go out and do stuff for a currency again.

  • @sweetsandman I feel like this is unfortunately a common thing that happens with these big changes that are announced. Hoping they learn from these and lay down all the details for future changes at the same time as announcement for things or at least more than they gave to begin with here.

  • @sweetsandman
Despite the expanded explanation in the post, there are crucial details missing. How much will the new items cost? What about people that have spent their doubloons before the announcement? Will that be a factor in how they will be priced? Which cosmetics will return and which not? How was this decision made and how can they justify it? Even then this update is still controversial at best. The game has many long standing issues, and doubloons were at the bottom of that list.

The only thing they haven't been really clear about is how is this different from the current doubloon situation? If I already have those items, and I do the Bilge Rat Weekender event to collect doubloons, I don't need to spend them so I just... hoard them? That seems like it's building up to be the same problem again.

So there has to be new stuff that older players can also spend doubloons on, but does that mean that an event won't get you enough doubloons to buy everything and you need to choose carefully?

Either you're not going to be able to buy everything and new players will be out of luck because they have a backlog of stuff that older players might have, or they do regular doubloon resets to keep everyone on the same page, or players have excess doubloons after an event because they already own some of the items in the Black Market.

We don't have enough details on how the new system is going to work.

  • Future.
What if..this just a big way to say there gonna use the doubloons for a more adventurous thing? Not just cosmetics?

    • Big, longer voyages you have to pay doubloons for.
    • Unlock certain 1 time features?
    • instead of AC, you can unlock those items with big DB payout?
But with bigger stuff, comes with a price, have to collect more doubloons, and if you already have a lot. Defeats purpose of introducing new things that will cost doubloons when there are a lot of players with ton of it.

Wouldnt be surprised if they introduce Gold to Doubloon feature again. 10million gold = 100 Doubloons :P

  • @gosva5434 if the doubloons are just sitting there, then what's the point? you've had the whole season to spend them. Can't believe this is where players are dying on their sword. This gives you another excuse to play the game to earn the new rewards they are adding, something the game desperately needs

  • As there are already a number of active Threads on the same topic, I'll be dropping anchor on this one.
