Doubloon Currency - Developer Update

  • I have 452 days played, 100% commendations, and 29k doubloons. What level of commitment are you expecting from your players for a sword? 50k is insane and out of touch. Please consider lowering it.

The FAQ was missing my question. What if I, a completionist who have played Sea of Thieves on and off since beta, and had hoarded just short of 50k doubloons (close enough to get all the cosmetics in time), heard about some upcoming doubloon reset from a random Youtuber, and hurried and bought a lot of the doubloon skins? I now don't get to collect these rare skins that will go away? My collector brain is sad.
When you announce a reset of doubloons, please announce that there'll be time limited cosmetics to purchase before-hand. If you did announce that (which I assume you didn't, based on all the hate on X and Reddit), that's my bad I guess, and RIP for listening to random Youtuber.

That's exactly what they're doing. items that you buy for Dubloons currently will change to gold purchases. Its the fact that tha time limited items they are releasing are priced so strangely that has everyone up in arms. If you have just short of 50k dubloons you should be able to get them before they reset. Others like myself who has been playing since Alpha are still 26k short because i was playing the game as intended, i am now being punished because i didnt hoard them enough. It just doesn't make sense.

I HAD just short of 50k. I don't anymore. I've played too many other games where things are suddenly reset or removed, and it's "oh you didn't buy that in time? That's too bad" (looking at you, WoW especially)
So when I heard that there was a reset coming, I spent them on random skins in the shop, fearing that they would be removed. I have 140 million gold, I'd like my doubloons back and just buy those skins after the reset now.
We absolutely need this changed into lifetime doubloons EARNED, instead of being something you buy.

  • 283 posts so far and they're virtually all saying this is a bad move and that your math is way out of touch.

It would be obvious to anyone who plays this game or loves this game that a cost of 50,000 doubloons for an item (at this stage) is simply rewarding exploiters or cheaters.

You've come up with arbitrary amounts before (all of the trinkets needed to be reduced, the hourglass commendations, just to name a couple) but this one is likely the most obvious demonstration that the numbers you come up with are simply not run by anyone who actually has a decent number of hours in the game or has spent time engaging with, as you love to call it, 'the community.'

    Not well played. :(

  • "Larinna's commemorative doubloon-themed item store is disappointing and fails to recognise the dedication of your players, new and old."

This sentiment can be seen echoed both here and on other platforms, in regard to the execution of your proposed doubloon reset, and understandably so.

For years the doubloon currency had been left neglected, Mike too acknowledged this in your most recent podcast, even noting that it had gotten out of hand. Players had been left with a limited catalogue of items to spend their doubloons on. Many would therefore naturally convert their excess doubloons to gold or trade them for letters of recommendation via Larinna, as these were the options they had been presented with.

Then suddenly, on January 21st via a video on YouTube, you cryptically announce plans for a big doubloon reset and tease the upcoming time-limited commemorative item store while refraining from disclosing the expected cost of said items. This sudden revelation within the community obviously led many to speculate and worry just how this would unfold and whether they would have enough doubloons to afford it all. Their concerns were clearly expressed across all of your channels, as players sought answers and reassurance. I thought this would have been an opportune time to engage with the community, gauge where it stands on the proposed change, and together come to a more satisfactory resolution for all parties. You instead opted to keep the cards close until now.

Notably, in the very same video you also stress how the team, with the return of the Black Market, has taken real care in selecting items previously available in the game to return while still preserving those mementos for players who participated at the time. The example you gave was enabling players to purchase the original Bone Crusher items from year one and finally complete their set, while preserving the legacy of items like the Drum of the Deep for those players who took part in The Hungering Deep. You further added that you are treading a very careful line in preserving those old memories. The irony here lies in the fact that this apparent care was absent in 2020, two years after The Hungering Deep had taken place, when the Drum of the Deep could be earned as a reward for defeating three megalodons during The Hungering Deep Anniversary Event.

This leads me to reflect upon previous instances, where the studio similarly wavered on its original philosophy of transparent communication with the community. Why has communication surrounding such time-sensitive rewards, over the years, so often felt as though it was handled with little care or foresight? And why has the team seemed largely unreceptive to the feedback that arose in the wake of such news?

An example of this would be in 2022, during the 2022 Preview Event, when the studio announced the closure of The Arena, stating that only those players who had already reached rank 50 with the Sea Dogs prior to this announcement would be eligible to receive the exclusive Good Boy ship set. This decision naturally left many players disappointed, particularly those who were already close to this milestone. They were left wondering why this announcement could not instead have served as a timely heads-up - and an incentive for them to push their Sea Dogs rank to 50 - thus qualifying for the reward before The Arena would come to a close.

For a game on the scale of Sea of Thieves and with its multitude of time-consuming activities to embark upon, I believe it exceedingly vital that your team diligently considers what reworking or vaulting systems means for the player, and delicately communicates it to them in a timely fashion. Not only because they deserve it, but also because failing to do so will leave them losing their faith and trust in your studio to steer the course.

In light of this, with the proposed reset of doubloons, I think the most sensible and fair approach would be to distribute these commemorative rewards based on a player’s lifetime doubloon balance. So in place of Larinna's commemorative store, I would encourage you to consider implementing a tiered reward system, using incremental lifetime doubloon balance thresholds that you deem appropriate in your mission to truly recognise the dedication of your players.

Should this not be feasible due to how your backend is structured, you could perhaps alternatively tally the total value of items currently priced in doubloons that a player already owns, add that value to their current doubloon balance, thereby estimating their approximate lifetime total, and distribute rewards accordingly.

To be fair to them, they did give people the chance to get to level 50 before a certain date. I did the grind to get Lvl 50 before to ensure i got the cosmetics.

While it is true that you were still given time to reach rank 50 with the Sea Dogs after the announcement that The Arena would be closing, the cut-off date for the Good Boy ship set was the moment the news was announced - January 27th, 2022 at 6 PM GMT.

  • @Sonicbob You are punishing players who used doubloons the way they were intended. 50,000 is ridiculous and you need to lower it.

  • @eobrah

Oh yeah that was it, it was so long ago i dont really remember it.

  • What an amazing decision.

The seas feel empty. Most of my friend's list is grey. No one is doing world events. There was such little engagement in Molton Sands, I was able to do it 3 times in a row. I only saw the fort up a handful of times. Hourglass changes players asked for almost 4yrs ago are finally being implemented, but those players have moved on to other games now, since their requests went apparantly ignored for the longest time. It's to the point now where you're changing server merges and making sure ships rise up near other ships, to give a false sense of the seas feeling alive. With hourglass demanding 2 spots, not sure what they're going to find when they say they're analyzing it, but everything is okay.

We're sick and tired of the time-limited FOMO you keep implementing. We know you've seen our comments on social media and on the forums. You know your players are frustrated with it, yet you've doubled-down on it yet again, making the players feel ignored. I kept waiting to hear it addressed at the last podcast, but there was no mention of it. Not even an acknowledgement. Everything is okay.

Players asked for a store to spend doubloons, and (deja vu) got ignored for years, so players converted their doubloons to gold. It's what the NPC is there for right? "The cutlass is purposefully priced at a level to truly recognize our most dedicated doubloon gatherers who have spent their time amassing a doubloon fortune over many years." So, you value the currency players hoarded, not their time spent playing your game? Isn't this how this issue started in the first place? Everything is okay.

Because you listened to so many who are sick and tired of time-limited FOMO, you decided to make the entirety of Act 2 to a single weekend. Players had issues with this, so you extended the weekend by a half-day on both sides. How generous. There's a monthly cap now, we still don't know if stolen chests will add to that amount (still not answered yet we've been asking) and players who can't play that weekend or get their chests stolen, too bad. It's the only weekend you'll get to earn doubloons. But, everything is okay.

As a veteran player (my time means nothing), I had to sit down and think hard about what I wanted to do here. I didn't have enough for the sword and other items, but if I just purchased the other items, I could almost afford the sword. So, I went out and grinded the most fun, and engaging gameplay ever. Between you and me it was nothing of the sort, but it'll look like it on paper, just like how "successful" the doubloon weekends are going to show.

    • Your hourglass takes 2 spots on every server. You've known this for years, yet you're going to "analyze" the effects it has? How much does it cost to see that it leaves just 4 ships on each server?

    • The bugs and glitches we reported on Insiders about the Ashen Garrisons, are still happening. Last night the rowboat dropped from the dock, floated up thru the ceiling and ended up in the main room, stuck on a table. There was no way we could get it out. Also, areas look open yet we're unable to access, until we turn the capstan, which made the gate appear as if we couldn't get through, but we could. I also turned invisible, with my weapon just floating around. Everything is okay though.

Keep telling yourself and believing that everything is okay Rare. Just for the record? Your Steam charts couldn't compete (at 6k players) with Wildrose's demo (20k players). But I'm sure everything is ok. This is clearly hitting the mark Rare. Keep it up.

  • @europa4033 It's the perfect fix to getting your friends back isn't it? Just delete their currency while they are on hiatus. At least they will convert it to gold. Which I imagine will be deleted in a later update as well. Though looking at your profile you would fall into the category of this reset is targeting you and those who came after. There's a lot of FOMO fro the first few years that only a select few still playing even have. Why put money and time into making new cosmetics when we can reintroduce the old ones. But currency is so out of control not matter which currency they put them at people could just buy them all up day1. So solution? Make them doubloons. Delete everyones doubloons. Problem solved. I would imagine they have done the math. If this causes some of the older, long lasting players to quit? I mean... Who cares? Harsh but #realtalk. We are leeches at this point. Older players aren't buying stuff from the emporium. If they do they are just using all the free ancient counts they got from skeletons and seasons passes. This is a change to hopefully re-engaged the fresher player base who might stick around longer and potentially spend money on the emporium. They are a business after all. However paid PvE servers so people can play how they want!? They would rather see this game sink to the bottom of the Mariana Trench than accept paid monthly fees for PvE servers.

  • players converted their doubloons to gold

Sorry, but with how easy it is to get Gold...or even Level up in factions. Wasting doubloons on the gold or level increase was silly for anyone to consider.

  • Hey Everyone, following our recent confirmation of the upcoming Doubloon commemorative items and their prices it's fair to say we've seen polarising feedback from across our playerbase.

We knew that by setting such a high price point for the Doubloon cutlass that truly targets our most dedicated Doubloon gatherers from the last seven years - that we'd in doing so disappoint many players who hadn't reached that clearly monumental target.
While we've seen lots of requests for this cutlass to be brought down in price and in turn made accessible to more of our players, we've made the decision to stay with the price we've established here and for this item to truly remain a recognition of the efforts of these over achievers.

Part of the feedback we saw however, was deep disappointment from many of our veteran players who had over time - spent or converted their Doubloon hoard and now found themselves unable to access this commemorative item. This feedback was fair and we didn't feel good that these veteran players were unable to celebrate their efforts here alongside others through no fault of their own.

While we had originally dismissed alternative distribution methods during the development process due to various technical and design comprehension reasons - we've made the call to reinvest development time into this system to create a better end result for our players.
The change we'll be making here will be to award the Doubloon Cutlass to all players who have earned over the 50,000 Doubloon threshold in their cumulative lifetime earnings. This means that even if players no longer have the Doubloons in their wallet, as long as they have earned over the 50,000 Doubloon threshold in their account lifetime they will be awarded this reward as recognition for their lifetime achievement.

While players will be unable to see their lifetime earnings, this will be calculated within our systems behind the scenes - this will take place on the 16th April prior to the reset. As the team work through this change in our approach, this will mean that the distribution of the Doubloon cutlass will happen later than originally planned and we'll communicate the specific timings of this rewards arrival closer to the time.

    So, just to recap on our approach for these commemorative items;
    Larinna will offer the following exclusive new commemorative Doubloon-themed items in her store for purchase with Doubloons from March 19th till April 16th;

    • 'Doubloon Hoarder' Title - 50 Doubloons
    • Eye Patch - 500 Doubloons
    • Belt - 1,000 Doubloons
    • Sails - 2,500 Doubloons

    On April 16th all players cumulative lifetime Doubloon earnings will be calculated and then as part of a follow-up update players will be issued the following into their inventories;

    • Cutlass - 50,000 Lifetime Doubloons Earned

Thank you to all players who have taken the time to share their feedback here, and while I know some will still feel disappointed in being unable to attain this sought-after item - we hope the changes we're making here will ensure our approach feels fair and rewards the time invested by our veteran achievers.

    Drew 'Sonicbob' Stevens

  • @sonicbob wait. So y’all made the decision to do lifetime doubloons earned but there is no way knowing how many you have earned? You guys think this is a good decision but you all are making this so much worse. Good luck putting out a bigger fire now. None of this makes sense and this is still a disaster

  • @sonicbob I believe this is a good change, the only question I have is how do I know if I have hit that 50,000 doubloon mark? Also is there a way for me to keep track?

  • @sonicbob A MUCH much better way of doing it, very happy to see that 💖
I just assumed it wasn't possible to check all the way back that far for people's lifetime doubloons, but I'm glad there's time being invested in finding a method to do that

Though I do still wish there was more to fill the gap between 2.5k and 50k (like an extra more meaningful title even), this is a good change nevertheless!
(also yes, as other people mentioned, a way to track life-time earnings would be a lifesaver! Like on some temporary part of the SoT website perhaps?)

  • @demon6880 it really isn't. That change makes it a bit more fair to us veteran players. Now, if there was a way to find out if you've reached that amount, that would be better.

At least now, we don't have to grind out the 50k unless we fall short of the lifetime amount.

  • Good change.

  • @sonicbob Huge W! Thank you for listening!

  • Massive W...
Pretty sure the community will appreciate this approach more! 🏴‍☠️🖤

  • @alrique5802 you can’t keep track. You’re in limbo.

  • @sonicbob

Thank you for listening to the feedback and acting quickly on it!

  • @sonicbob
So we are now free to spend any doubloons above 4.050?
    No more changes?
Would you now recommend buying old season stuff or would it be better to let the doubloons convert to gold and then buy them?
    Just want to make sure.

  • Consaidering you guys do have that metric, why not temporarily display it somewhere on pirate profile on the website? Not even in game, not worth patching it for it, but on the website just so people can be sure.

  • So with the change to give the sword to pirates with 50k doubloons earned TOTAL over their pirate lifetime; is there any way that we can check our progress/stats on this? Can we just make a ticket?

  • @triplexjester it really isn’t since we can’t track it. If we could track heck yea amaizng change. Everyone is in limbo now.

  • Now it will be less exclusive

  • @Sonicbob Whilst I wasn't eally on board with the original inception of the pricing 0.5k, 1k massive jump to 50k, this change now feels like a real let down for veteran players who have a lot of doubloons. In the end there isn't really going to be anything special to show off how much time and dedication people gave to playing the game if every cosmetic becomes accessible for all.

For the record I have 150+k doubloons and so I was hoping there would be more expensive items, to highlight how much time and effort I have poured into this game.

  • @sonicbob This is an amazing change, thank you for listening to the feedback! :D

  • You can tell players how many doubloons they have in general for today, so they will know at least how many they need...
But still, 50K is too much. The huge difference between players is because some of them were using bugs and glitches to earn these doubloons, and some of them were just playing and trying to earn doubloons as the game was designed.
Now, those who used bugs will receive the great reward! Well done.

  • @sonicbob Sorry but this is a HORRIBLE decision and an insult to veteran players like myself. Caving into people who are upset cause they didn’t earn it isn't fair, and sets a horrible precedent. If they can’t afford it the sword isn’t meant for them. These are meant to be commemorative items to some of your most dedicated players. Now the only item that took hard work and serious dedication is much easier to achieve and will be much less special because of it. We’re talking the “doubloon hoarder” title that can be achieved by turning in 2 reapers chests as a grade 5. Like are we serious? Unfortunately this has been a going theme for years in this game. Thought for once this would be a place where you would hold your ground. Really disappointing. If this is really the route you’re taking the other items should increase significantly. 50 doubloons for the title is a joke.

  • Man, all that energy and brain power (and now, additional development time) devoted to something that could have been easily solved without much hassle through a simple player or insider consultation, ahead of time, and not by blindly, unilaterally overcomplicating things for no reason.

Can't wait for the gold reset, that should be fun.

  • Yeah....we're gonna need to know how much we have earnt already.....It still doesn't really help us knowing whether we're going to get it or not? At least before, we knew how many we had to grind to get the 50k, now we're totally in the dark and people will be griding anyway, but with no end in sight.

While i appreciate the change in diection, it really doesn't help the player not knowing how much we have earnt. online trackers like Geekya do not have these historic transactions.
