Positive Feedback

  • This forum tends to focus on improvements we'd like to see, and things that have frustrated us. We rarely come here to rave about how much fun we're having on Sea of Thieves, probably because we're busy playing Sea of Thieves. I thought it would be good to include some positive feedback about changes and aspects of the game that have worked really well.

    1. Overall Experience.
I think this is a fantastic game with a great balance of sandboxy freedom, but with enough quests, challenges, and commendations that we're rarely, if ever, struggling to find something to do. The game mechanics are fine tuned enough to provide skill based challenges and make competitive play interesting, but not so complex that we can't immerse ourselves in the story or just sit back and appreciate a visually stunning world.

    2. Regular New Content
I know we all have our opinions on why X, or Y from season Z did or didn't work (I'll go into details about more specific changes below), but I also want to recognise the challenge of bringing out new content as regularly as Rare does, balancing it from a game mechanics perspective, as well as making the storytelling aspect interesting and immersive. You don't have to take much of a break from this game to know you're going to come back to a whole load of new stuff to learn and explore. There's a nice mix of time limited events to enjoy and then look back on, and permanent new content.

    Specific Changes

    1. The Burning Blade
The Burning Blade world event is a fantastic piece of content. It is, in my opinion, the most exciting, unique and original thing they've added to the game since I started playing. It is my favourite world event by far, partly because it incorporates so many different aspects of the game - a nice balance of PVE and PVP, it involves both sailing and land based adventures, combat and puzzles, constantly balancing risk and reward. But also because it introduces unique experiences and opportunities - mainly the feeling that you have become a fundamental part of the game's content, story, and world. You're not just doing stuff. You ARE the "stuff" that other players have to try and do. If I had one request for future content it would be "more stuff like this". More opportunities to really be a part of the story, rather than just another person playing through it.

    2. The grapple gun.
Amazing new weapon. Incredibly well balanced. Providing the option to sacrifice a little competitive lethality, for convenience, creativity, and general fun making and shenanigans.

    3. Throwing Knives
Again, very well balanced weapon. Nice all rounder that does a bit of everything, but not too much of anything.

    4. Removing 1 Hit Blunder.
Excellent choice that's massively improved the combat experience. I'm not winning any more fights than I was before the change, or getting spawn killed any less, but I'm having more fights. There's now just a little bit of back and forth each time before I get killed again, which in my opinion makes a world of difference. It's the difference between getting beaten at a game I'm not very good at (and trying to figure out how I could improve) and not really getting to play the game at all because I'm just spending all my time on the ferry or staring at black screens (with no idea what I was supposed to learn or do differently because the fight was over before I knew what was happening).

    5. Friendly Skeletons
Whether they're from bonecallers, reaper's chest, dug up on islands, or on the burning blade, the ability to have skeletons that are on your side but still doing their own thing, adds a whole new feel to the game that makes it so much more enjoyable. I think the ability to bend a tiny bit of the world's randomness in your favour, makes the game feel a little less like everything's always against you.

    6. PVE boarders
From bonecallers or the Barnacled Dread, I think the addition of non-player enemies boarding your ship is a great idea. It gives an extra dimension to PVE naval combat and makes the encounters feel more alive and exciting, and makes the challenge more complex and interesting.

Interested to hear what changes everyone else thinks have had the most positive impact and why.

  • Truly, ever since I tried it out, the harpoon gun has rarely left my inventory. It's an indispensible part of the way I now move about and enjoy my treasure-hunting voyages.

  • Burning blade without a chest of fortune though is not worth the effort making the event useless.

Grapple gun is too good. I literally can't play without it because of the mobility factor, the ability to get unstuck etc. Makes the game feel worse because if you are just a PvE player then cutlass is mandatory, grapple is also now mandatory for traversal, a gun is also mandatory for dealing with kegs and certain types of enemies. So now we have 3 mandatory items for 2 slots. Feels gross. Having to visit the weapon locker and swap so frequently feels terrible. However them adding a 3rd weapon slot would be imbalanced if they can't restrict what goes in that slot. So grapple gun being a tool always on our characters seems better than a weapon locker choice.

Bone callers are a great new throwable... THROWABLE..... Gee.... Isn't there a bundle at the shipwright for those? Yes I agree with the fact these additions are nice. But literally every addition they make to the game doesn't get a quality of life pass and revisit old stuff to incorporate them. You should be able to get some bonecallers and traps with that bundle at the shipwright. Also the start supplies could at least come with 2. Similarly some scatter shots coming with the cannon ball purchase would be nice. I would also argue including some chain shots but chain shots are too useful in pvp. So while I only use them to get lower hull shots on skeleton ships if the waves are rough or to just kill ghost ships because any hit counts...

Friendly skeletons. Great addition, from helping find treasure on islands with lacking land marks to them helping carry treasure to your ship, but like with everything else in this game... What we need to bring fire bombs to murder them so they wont keep getting in the way of our loot we keep trying to harpoon but the harpoons aim assist keeps hitting our skeletons instead? Also the fact the AI seems to break often and they wont attack enemies.

Perhaps I am too much of a pessimist but even the positive things that have been added to the game (which there have been SO many at this point) all have down sides because of lack of care or after thought. Think about collectors chests. They were added to the game years before the developers finally decided... Hey you know what would be cool? being able to load them while holding and to be able to sell all contents of the chest with the press of a button. Amazing change. Took too long to finally implement. Now what about hold right click then left click to dump the whole chest out? Would make ferrying things out of a fort vault while solo much easier.

The excitement when they said they have a dedicated team working on improving quality of life in the game was great... The fact that team apparently is not real or not working on anything any of us have been requesting... Feels odd.

  • PvE in Sea of Thieves has almost never interested me. The difficulty is kept low to keep time sinks low for newer crews, but it's felt for a while like there is no "endgame PvE". The Ancient Megs were the wrong step in the right direction, inflating the difficulty artificially through a higher health pool and stronger attacks.

I cannot say this enough, I was grinning EAR TO EAR fighting the Eternal Guard. This is some of the most fun PvE I've had recently and might even drive me to take up a bit of solo gameplay again.

Whoever designed this boss, please, KEEP COOKING! 🙏
