I have felt heavily discouraged from sharing feedback to Sea of Thieves for probably the longest I played the game for, but I might as well give it my best shot.
The Problem:
- With every Seasonal update Sea of Thieves is getting, the file size of the entire game installation is getting larger, slowly cutting off new and/or current players. Some, if not all players have limited storage capacity being slowly eaten up by the ever growing file size of the game.
What could be a solution to combat this:
- Taking inspiration from other games, unsure if I am allowed to mention them here, they use a smart method by splitting resources, such as High resolution textures, extra game modes and additional language packs, into seperate downloadable content via a modular game content architecture approach.
Should the player feel like they have no interest in having said resources be kept on their Computer, they can uninstall it with ease, thus freeing up more storage space and potentially increase the stability of the game itself by reducing the load on computational resources, as well as file size the game is using or by reducing the risk of accidental game bugs.
What resources could be considered as "Additional":
- If I look at the game and round up all of its mechanics/game content, I picked some that I see fit for Additional Resources that can be uninstalled at the player's choice. Here's a select number of them:
- Tall Tales: I am sure that I wont be needing these assets since I see myself never touching or playing them.
- High Resolution textures: I am a type of player who prioritises high frame rates over stunning looking textures by having all graphical options set to the lowest the game lets me set, so I wont be needing the high resolution textures on my PC anyways.
- Pre-streamed Assets: These types of assets are streamed in realtime while the game is being played which could result in game stutters as well as small freezes. Downloading this will hopefully stop all that from happening as the game picks it up as "Already Streamed".
- Hourglass: I am a player who will not engage in 1v1 fights as I would like to work hard for my own treasure and mind my own business. Since I never touch Hourglass, I dont need it installed on my PC.
What is the end goal of these proposals:
- As someone who is obsessed with having things run efficiently and without issues, these proposals may or may not see significant improvements to the operation of the game as well as potential increase in stability, relatively low file size and acceptable with improved performance.
