Merchant Alliance Skeleton Fleet Battle vs Battle of the Sea of Thieves

  • Hello.

I am not sure how the matchmaking mechanics work for the Merchant Alliance Skeleton Fleet Battle voyage but it appears that the game searches for an available/not in use Battle of the Sea of Thieves event and spawns me on that server? Both battles take place in the same location and have much the same format of defeating two Skloops and one Skalleon (fighting them solo in a sloop) and both battles display the same event cloud. I have only completed the Merchant Alliance voyage three times and no crew has joined in or attacked me whilst in battle but I am wondering how this scenario will work for other players? Will it simply be the regular Battle of the Sea of Thieves event for them and how does that work with the difference in final loot haul between the voyage and the regular event? I have never entered the regular event and it has displayed the Merchant Alliance battle banners but there have been times when on completion, there has been no final loot or limited final loot. Could I have entered the incomplete voyage battle of another player?

    Any thoughts and advice appreciated.

    Thank you.

  • From what i understand, the loot type is 'locked' once you start the event. If it's a raid voyage there is less loot dropped visibly because it's all for one faction and is probably like 5-6 items including the faction specific raid item (for merchants the scroll of waters).

This means people who attack the fleet afterwards will still only be able to get the loot a merchant raid voyage would drop.

While I can't speak for no loot appearing, limited is as I said, because when it's a raid voyage it only is giving you that faction's loot but isn't about to give you the same amount a mixed loot clear would give or that would be too much. Though the Scroll of Uncharted Waters from the fleet is worth about if not more than the amount of mixed loot you could get.

  • What happens is when you dive for a raid voyage, the game looks for a server with no one doing a world event. Then it cancels that world event and spawns your raid one. I know this b/c i have a FOF spawn like and I headed straight for it . Two min later it despawned and another standard for occured. So we headed there, sunk the merchant doing it and got their loot.

Thanks for the reply. Would be good if the loot is locked as letting would be attackers know, might be enough to make them move on if hefty loot is what they are after. With no emissary bonuses, the loot from the Merchant voyage is about half of the total of the full regular battle at about 20K worth. Close to half of the regular battle loot would be Gold Hoarders with a dozen or more captain's chests and assorted items in the Ashen ones. Most of the rest is Order of Souls with all the skulls and gems with only a little going to the Merchant Alliance. So for levelling up Merchant, the raid voyage is better. I have not tried the other emissary Skeleton fleet voyages, so perhaps they are more than the Merchant and closer to or equal to the regular final loot haul.

Thanks for the reply. I have noticed that the voyage spawns you in exactly the same spot every time, which supports the despawning of the regular battle and the spawning of a new raid battle. When you got the loot, did you get the scroll as well?

Yup, number of times I have done a world even to find its a raid is quite high.

  • I have had dive to versions where the event has already been progressed slightly. I believe (haven't tested recently) that if owning person cancels the voyage it also reverts loot but not sure this is consistent behaviour. I feel like I've had it work both ways in the past.

Have definitely dived to active fleets where loot is already generic and next round updates.

  • Something else that I have noticed. Is that after completing about five raid voyages, now when I enter the battle it no longer displays the Merchant Alliance screen banners. It only shows the regular purple Battle for the Sea of Thieves banner. However, it still shows the Merchant Alliance screen banner upon completion.

It does reset the battle format but I am not sure at what stage. I just started a raid voyage and a Reaper came after I had sunk the two Skloops and was onto the Skalleon. I left the battle area before they arrived and engaged the Skalleon. I went to Dagger Tooth to restock and waited to see what would happen. The Reaper left about half an hour later after a battle with another crew and had not sunk the Skalleon. I returned and finished the battle and got the regular final loot haul. It did not show the raid voyage completion banners, only the regular banner. So at some stage my voyage ended and the battle returned to normal.
