Refund Storage Crates, Supply Crates, etc

  • I think storage crates and supply crates should be refundable to merchants you buy them from, even if you get a slightly reduced refund price, like maybe -200 gold or something for convenience. It's a small change but I think for certain people it would just kind of feel convenient, we typically use them for looting islands just before we take off so we usually don't even purchase the other supply crates from the merchant or shipwright or whatever but if we did and we really only needed it so we didn't have to make 100 trips to and from the boat because it's kind of just monotony. Like whatever you say about balance, it's just a chore facet of the game that just eats up time. Both on safer seas and high seas. I won't complain about having to find the barrels when some are interactable or anything, there's barrel hide, I just have a particular anecdote that it's kind of a bothersome feeling for. I have enough gold to where I don't care and gold is worthless to me but my friends dont have as much and I feel bad when they buy storage crates or loot it to help. Also the price being 5000, with no difference between high/safer seas where you get barely anything for playing kind of makes it much worse

The thing is, most of my friends play on different schedules because we're all over the country, and were at this threshold where we have 2 people playing consistently together, me and my fiance; and my 2 other friends hop in whenever they're around. So it kind of ends becoming a situation where we have to switch ships if we want to play together, like if one person joins, we have to scuttle and switch to a brig. If another joins after that, we have to scuttle and switch to a galleon. I'm not complaining about the crew sizes, but sometimes it feels bad when we have to sit around and wait otherwise we basically miss out on a ton for committing to playing this game at all due to how they want you to sit through the looting, navigating, all that, etc and it being a sunk cost thing you can't carry between sessions. It'd probably at least bother us a little less if it didn't cost anything to conveniently get started. I'd really prefer if there was an easier way to change your ship or something mid session tbh, like at the shipwright, but I'm sure there's some other reason why that would be imbalanced

  • Not too long ago you couldn't sell the siren tridents either and every time you loaded into an Outpost that another crew recently vacated, you'd come out of the tavern to a dozen of them floating in the water next to their leftover supplies. Rare solved this problem by making them sellable to all the trading companies for 250 gold each; I always said a similar approach should work with Storage Crates.

I don't think Storage Crates need to be refundable; honestly there's not much reason to buy one at all since they're the most common item found washed up on the shore. I've always got 10-15 left over every session, and that's not counting the ones I've emptied during downtime and dumped overboard.

No reason why Rare can't make it so that we can sell excess Storage Crates in the same way. We can sell Storage Crates of the Damned for up to 1,100 gold after all...no reason we shouldn't be able to sell the less-ghostly ones, too (for much less since they're so common).

If they're worried about balance, make it so you only get 100 gold per crate or something. Just to encourage pirates to sell everything they've got on board before leaving a session. Probably help towards server a bit too when there's fewer individual parts to render...

It's mainly that theyre convenient for carrying around the island and using "take" from all the barrels, so you can loot the island for all it has, and then sort it out on your ship afterwards. In safer seas, you don't start with anything and theres no chance youll get one for free for people who have recently logged out. 5000 gold is approx~ 10-20, maybe even more, loot items in safer seas as well. One of my friends is trying the game for the first time, and we're doing the tall tales with him first, but hes not always around, so when he is around or if he has to go suddenly, then basically we just eat the cost of the crate(s) and it's a bit high. Multiple times because sometimes he's gotta go cook, sometimes he's got work, etc. Playing the game already kind of demands a committment of time if you've got treasure aboard for the most part, so it's kinda harsh to charge 5,000 gold for something that just makes looting simpler

The thing is, I know there's functionality in the game for it to determine whether or not a storage crate you've received was purchased from the island you're standing on, so I know they can tell whether or not its origin is there, and while I agree we should be able to sell storage crates for at least a small sum of gold, if the price is 5000 for an empty storage crate, selling them back for something like 5K each would be a bit much. It's why I said refund, basically. We buy it for 5k, use it to loot an island, and we can return it for 4500-4800 if we bought it from that same outpost. This way if we loot an island and end up having to switch ships just after taking off (which very frequently happens) then it doesn't feel like we've lost 5000, 10000 by the time everyone joins.

So yeah, I'd say selling ones you just find out in the wild for 100 or whatever is fine, I just want to be able to loot islands cleanly with the crates if I bother to carry one around with me rather than sprinting everywhere. It's just that 5000 is a high price for a little convenience in gamemodes where you can earn so little, and where closing your session ends up giving you no return if you spend it

edit: in retrospect, if the reason it's 5000 gold is because theyre afraid someone would buy it, and use it to cheese another player by looting their barrels or something, maybe just make it so you cant use storage crates on another crew's ship? Idk, I already fight like an obnoxious punk when I have to make sure people sink on the high seas by eating their food and killing them as soon as they spawn. the pvp is already full of ways to gimp people and cheese them. If this is actually a concern, well, Rare plays god here. they can make it cheaper on safer seas to coincide with the massively reduced rewards, too, its not like you can bring it with you to high seas
