Worsening performance and client-side stability.

  • Hey all, wanted to post my own thoughts and please reply/upvote with your own experience as well so this gets developer attention.

SoT is getting slower. Areas where I used to push 144 frames with mythical settings are now at 60-120 frames on cursed. For reference, these metrics were performed on the same computer- a NIVIDA GeForce RTX 3090Ti 24Gb, AMD 5950x 16 core 32 thread CPU, my os and SoT installed on a 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 internal SSD maxing out around 7000 MB/s, ethernet connection, and 128Gb of DDR4 RAM. My temps are the same, barely topping 60 C. The frame rate in this game is degrading rapidly, even with Vsync and all cursed settings, even resolution scaling from 100% to 50% doesn't dent the frame rate. Next to islands, forts, and Port Merrick are the worst offenders. I update my drivers and game, reinstalled, etc. Still no performance change.

My buddy has an AMD card he's used for 3 years, and used to push 120 frames consistently, now can barely break 50-60. He hasn't changed his graphics settings at all. He's updated his drivers. I know this isn't a hardware issue.

For an FPS game, I'm extremely disappointed. I have a very powerful rig and I want to play this beautiful game, but it's so unoptimized that an user cannot expect anything consistent above 30-45 FPS. There needs to be resources allocated to consistent performance on systems so that people with all kinds of rigs (including console players) can enjoy SoT consistently.

The sheer bloat of the game is making it inaccessable for people who don't have the drive space or hardware to run past 30 FPS.

  • I know people were hesitant to subscribe to the idea that Xbox support is gradually lending to more and more issues, but I'm absolutely more leaning to that idea now. I saw a video recently of a first-gen Xbox One player trying to walk around Port Merrick - the amount of stuttering, rubber banding, and FPS drops was astounding... It was nigh unplayable.

If they keep limiting content to what will function on that console, I can only imagine how that can effect players with better hardware. Never mind the servers being incredibly dated as well.

  • I've been getting some stuttering on Xbox Series X lately.

  • @d3adst1ck, you have linked:

    • I don't know how many times I'll have to say it but Older Generation Consoles or Lower Spec PC has no impact on the performance of our server.

While older generation consoles do not have an impact on the performance of the Sea of Thieves servers, it does not mean they do not have an impact on the client-side capabilities and performance as well.

  • @thenestiik I was replying directly to the notion that older consoles were impacting servers.

  • @d3adst1ck

Yes, you're absolutely right. While older consoles certainly limit the scale or complexity of development, much of that has already been defined and implemented. Bloated codebase and unoptimization for the sake of "content" is making the game inaccessible.

  • Ryzen 7 3700x, rtx 2070 here. Not an amazing rig, but I am playing at 1080p.

Port merrick is so laggy that I regret my decision of supporting merrick in the adventure that lead to building it.

Game used to run smooth as butter for me also. That's not the case anymore.

  • Heya,

    I got a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, ASUS TUF RTX 5080 OC, 64gb DDR5 RAM, 2tb Ssd, Gigabyte B650 UD AX Mobo.

I have been troubleshooting my terrible performance in SoT for MONTHS. I have seen every reddit post and video for that matter (it seems.)

I found that what helps my game run smoothest is:

    • DirectX12
    • Fullscreen
    • Vsync
    • FPS Cap OFF
    • Monitor set to 144fps in NVCP

It just feels more fluid uncapping the FPS, then allowing VSYNC to cap it at your monitors refresh rate. If anybody has any awesome stability tips and tricks let me know.

I really enjoy Process Lasso for PC, a neat program that allows you to set CPU priority and such.

I desperately want to have smoother gameplay with less input lag.
