Explain the SBMM System

  • I don't understand how the SBMM system works in this game. Throughout the day my crew and I have consistently matched with players already sporting the ghost or skelly curse. I am only level 36 with 46 ships sunk in the Guardian faction and I match with ghosties almost every match. I fought the same crew twice, back to back. The reduction in allegiance rep, long queue times, and the terrible matchmaking has really put a damper on this mode for me. I feel like something needs to be done about the matchmaking in this game. I'm not terrible at PVP, but man some of these folks are on another level.

  • This season has been a reality check for several people who thought they knew how good they were in PvP due to the emergent encounters in Adventure. It's hard to really say you're "not terrible at PvP' but are gaining a losing streak due to fighting other, more skilled players that have made strong progression in this mode more than most of the playerbase.

You'll get the same responses about the matchmaking which is understandable. There is matchmaking, the problem is there aren't any players around your determined skill level. So the matchmaking system eases out a bit till it can find you a match, which is usually with top tier players that have likely had quite the few years of tough PvP to go through, alongside having experience in The Arena, which were extremely intense PvP scenarios.

The reasonable solution here is just to up your game, take these extremely tough fights, and eventually start winning.

  • Much like the PL title, the curses don't mean anything.
You can "earn" these by losing a lot, or be with a crew who helps you.

  • @nex-stargaze Thank you for the comment, but I disagree with the get good sentiment. I know I'm a decent PvP player. I was an arena rat back in the day and I can hold my own in a fight. Most of my crew is TSD. So, we're no strangers to PvP. This isn't the first thread to approach this problem. The matchmaking is terrible at the moment. Unfortunately, this mode is starting to head down the same path as arena. The crews that we came up against were sweaty double gunning ghosties using animation cancelling. These players weren't the people cheesing their way to the curses.

they mean a hell of a lot in a game where cosmetics are king, if something is locked behind beating other players it proves your better than everyone else why else would the devs lock the most requested curses behind a 100 rank grind if not to create a class divide of haves and have nots

That's a very good point. Though I am new to the game and therefore inexperienced on such matters, from what I have read elsewhere on these forums, the Discord and on YouTube, it seems to me many people who claim to be good at PvP have only been attacking noobs in Adventure, who are a much softer and easier target. However, when those same people enter the new hourglass combat arenas they go up against players who are genuinely skilful seasoned PvPers, and they find out they are not as good as they thought they were.

  • @jester1027 An explanation of the matchmaking system: https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/S8-matchmaking-changes

Tbh I'd rather have faster queue times than wait underwater forever. SBMM is a nice idea when the playerbase is large enough to support it. I don't think SoT has that playerbase.

Rare just needs to find a way to keep people interested. Lower level rewards might give folks a feeling of accomplishment as they work their way to to 100 (and then 1000). Seasonal rewards, for matches completed as well as matches won, would also keep folks coming back.

Otherwise, the system only appeals to people who are really into PvP, or really want the curses.

Credit where credit is due though. They seem to be taking feedback into consideration more than they did with Arena. The changes from the most recent patch were nice enough to regain my interest. Looking forward to further refinement. Maybe one day they'll even address hitreg.

  • @theblackbellamy Appreciate the link to the explanation of the matchmaking system. That helped shed some light on the subject. I must admit, my assumptions were wrong about the matchmaking system. I look forward to the proposed solution for the queue times.
