Demarco Murder Mystery Involves Too Much Social Media and Too Little Gameplay

  • I am a veteran of the game, with most things completed, but recently my crew and I have been taking some extended breaks. The thought of a murder mystery to solve was quit intriguing. Figuring that we could use our knowledge of the game itself to help solve this mystery, made us want to start playing more again. Then, many of the clues and evidence were not in the game to find and solve. Only through social media could you get most of the clues. This ruined the experience to the point where we stopped actively trying to solve it and took another game break from SOT. We want to play the game and enjoy it. Sea of Thieves has a rich environment to put in a real mystery for us to solve where clues and evidence in the game can lead to the next step. It would entice veterans and new players alike, to play the game. Keep SOT about the game play and leave social media for notifications and news.

  • That mystery stuff is about as bubble as something can be.

Everyone I know that very much is into the sea dogs experience haven't followed it at all other than trying to keep a lookout for any cosmetics that might pop up.

I dunno how the content ends up being worth it by targeting such a small portion of the overall participants of the game but it must benefit them to some degree if it's still going.

The amount of players that have zero idea this is even going on would be an interesting number to see.

    Why..and how?
It like how most treasure hunts are made.

    • Read this book
    • Go to this location
    • Solve this riddle by visiting this website/book
    • Now go visit Youtube and locate that hidden URL in that one video posted to find another clue.
    • Okie go ingame & find the two last digits of a pad lock by completing this one mission ingame.

We want to play the game and enjoy it.

soo forget about the Mystery and do just that. Easy.

So many clues have been added within the game, once they been in the game for a month or so, they took them out. Happens when you miss out by taking breaks. :p

Yet here I am(Vet?)..still playing the game.

So far it seems..the hate is about the Social media....which I can only guess is, Missed the clues or dont like visiting the twitter page every time. (which in this day and age, everyone has a phone and tweets) so it basic thing to do. Even while playing the game at the same time.
It not about using Social media to much, it fact seems more the OP is upset they use it and they can't :p after all, who doesn't have a twitter and use it every day?

what I wish they do more:

    • Post Picture on SM, reveals a riddle to a clue that is found on an island. :p (oh wait...they do this)
  • Agreed, leaving some "Easter eggs" to be found by lighting a lantern in some random place at some random time, without any actual clues left by the initial clue is just horrible. Pirates didn't go around on social media trying to figure out how to solve clues, and modernization of the pirate fantasy shouldn't focus on doing so either

  • The last couple of weeks have been a lot better than the earlier ones. They seem to have (hopefully) ditched the retweet/like stuff.

  • I have a Twitter account created out of some distant necessity. I don’t use it at all. I’m sure I’m an outlier but it does answer the question @burnbacon poses of “who doesn’t have a twitter and use it every day?”

I was intrigued by the mystery at first but totally disengaged when all the retweet/like stuff hit, and I’m totally out now. Couldn’t care less other than to use it as source material for snarky comments.

Clearly the social media/in-game blend has captured the interest of a subset of the community; not sure who the target audience is but it seems to be mostly SM-active veteran players. I can’t imagine it has done much either for recruiting or retention but be happy to be proven wrong.

  • I tried to follow the mystery, but I lost it. It’s not very intuitive for players. I wish it was more integrated into the game itself like adventure tab, but a mystery tab with all the progress, clues found, etc. Like X player discovered a note saying Y.

    Never joined Twitter.

But if I want to follow the mystery, a quick Google search is usually enough to get me all the information I need.

  • @burnbacon

Sorry if you missed the point of the post, but by reading your response, I think I understand why. If you don't know the game very well, and use SM, the internet, or watch YouTube, to complete a treasure hunt or voyage, that's ok. All the clues are in the game for a treasure hunt, adventure, tall tale, or voyage, you just have to look. All players, regardless of experience, can play the game how they choose. This is not a hatred for SM, the internet, or Youtube, etc. Rare has done a great job, even from the beginning when there was barely any content in the game, using these platforms to keep players informed. I hope they continue to do so.

  • @kingxofxtone Thats what you get when you spend more than twice on RRPP, and community managers than on developers and managers with interesting ideas, concepts and a solid plan for the future.

Is this a serious question? The answer is: most people.

  • Ain't gonna lie, this mystery has gone on so long and been so complicated that I'm not really sure what exactly the whole story is anymore. I have also lost interest at this point. Sometimes you can overcook a mystery by making it too convoluted and lengthy.

Yeah, this one is a bit long in the tooth at this point. I'm hoping that they are learning from this first one - it seems like maybe they are? It is a lot less social media now than it was at the start, and they ditched the retweet/like for progress and seem to have more in-game things now which is good.

To maintain interest, I think players need to feel like they are making progress and the main problem with the DeMarco one is we have zero progress. We've followed a very long trail for a very long time but we still don't know who/why/how. I'm hoping the website leak with the S7 update means we are ending this one soon and the next one won't drag out as long. More shorter mysteries are better than fewer, longer ones I think.
