Merchant commodities are a casualty of over-correcting when focusing on what alliance servers are doing and disregarding the organic experience.
For whatever reason there was a pattern of releasing things that were far too easy/powerful (and obvious) to cheese and then nerfing it to death.
Commodities, they did it with emissaries and athena 10-20. Tridents had a very bizarre nerf considering how powerful they are for things that are far more important than some solo taking out a meg and a kraken easily.
The good news is that is hasn't happened much lately. Sea forts came out well balanced, underwater stuff, the athena voyages came out well balanced. So that's promising.
They can definitely make it more appealing to the middle gold wise but I think it was neglected too long for any serious comeback.
I feel bad for anyone that didn't get those 50 steals early on that plays organically, brutal.
