Customized Outposts

  • Hey all, I’ve been a big fan of this game and one thing I realized that would be a major pull for me and my friends (that I’ve been trying to convince to play) would be the ability to customize, earn or unlock building improvements and decorations.

It would be really fun if you could build a dock to specific shapes, add walls, get perks with additional buildings or customize a fort.

With how the server design is set up today (with ~5-6 random crews), I can foresee each crew gets a random outpost assigned to them as a “home port” and this is the one that is customized. It would be fun if we had the ability to hire mercenaries on cannon turrets to fend off other players while we’re away.

  • @mcsqueeky While this might be fun for survival games, SOT relies on the balance where everyone has the same perks and advantages. Custom building and NPC crews will upset that balance giving the unfair advantage to those with more monetary resources.

So pretty much this ruins the whole game. -_-

  • @metal-ravage I just mean the idea of persistence sounds really attractive. Imagine posting a picture in Discord to your offline crew to say “Hey guys! Look what I spent the last few hours trying to unlock for us.” Something that helps you enjoy your time on the island rather than just treating it as a uninteresting stop on your journey.

I believe upfront, you’re correct in saying that there could be a monetary imbalance but it’s nothing that can’t be solved with some basic logic. I mean that’s what the game designers get paid to do. It could be as simple as supplying everyone with core building unlocks/defences.

When I say “persistent” I just mean that the customizations save to your character account and load in when you do rather than living on the server indefinitely.

  • @mcsqueeky You could clean a sea fort from ghosts and post a picture to your friends with the same result.
From what you are saying I'm getting some minecraft vibes and it often happens that gamers want to replicate their experiences in other games as well.

SOT is unique because you can never expect what will happen once you jump on a new session. This vibrant, dynamic world is not a game you can save to go back to what you built before. The thrill of the unexpected is what makes SOT such a good sandbox game.
