What’s the etiquette in general?

  • I ask this after having several strange encounters with other players in SoT and coming from another game which has its own etiquette, although it being co-op game without any PvP; Deep Rock Galactic.

For those unfamiliar with that game, its a co-op session based game where up to 4 players try to complete a mission as a team.
Now, in this game the community has several rules or etiquette thats mostly actively taught to new players by veterans.

‘Always slap the dice for good fortune’
    ‘Host buys beer for buffs’
‘Always complete secondary objectives as well’

    And the list goes on.

Now, Sea of Thieves has several ways to express yourself as a player. The flags on a ship and using character emotes all are tools to communicate.
Now that I’ve been boarded, attacked, spawncamped, stolen from, but also helped in various ways (ship stocked back up), practise sword combat, quest sharing, etc. I am curious what the common etiquette is in SoT communiy.
Perhaps I’ve conducted myself in a way to provoke people to attack me even though my intend was to mind my own business.

One player was docked at an outpost, but once I came sailing in he or she lowered the sails, swung broadside and fired a cannon at my ship before hightailing ok the winds to the horizon.
I was just coming in to dock and deliver goods. I was showing the yellow flag.

So again, what’s the etiquette in this game? Can you by and large trust the flag people raise? Are most players aggressive without reason? Is there some kind of secret handshake? :)

  • Communication is key but doesn't have guaranteed results it just helps prevent issues between players that aren't super aggressive

    giving people space helps

everything that can be seem as friendly or peaceful can be used as a trap and pirates know this

just communicate clearly, give space, hope for the best, and prepare for the worst by improving at defending yourself when needed.

  • @yskonyn

    Flags means nothing.
    Posture means nothing.
    Everything goes.

Dont swear/use racial slurs in any of the game chats voice/text.

  • Always slap the dice for good fortune’
    ‘Host buys beer for buffs’
‘Always complete secondary objectives as well’

I’ve been playing for 6 months and I never learned those…..and I’ve played with others. :(

what’s the etiquette in this game?

Depends on a few factors, mainly the players mindset.

Before it was if you saw a ship with cannons up to the sky, they mean no harm or want to fight.

    • Sailing a white flag was a sign of “I’m friendly”
    • alliance flag works both ways. Friend or for
    • reapers mark flag was “come at me”
    • Board another ship without permission, fight.

But that only works on people who even have a sign of respect or whatever toward anyone.

Some follow other rules mainly for there own suit. Like myself:

    • If someone sails toward me without an alliance flag, fight or flight.
    • cannons down. Fight or flight
    • No mic. (Seriously I don’t trust the quiet types)
  • There is no etiquette.

You wanna sink somebody? Do it. Or don't.

  • It's mainly an open field when it comes to the seas. Some respect a parley, some fire on site at anything in cannon range. Some folks are chill and will alliance or even help you, some will spawn camp you while dropping every derogatory word they know. However, generally speaking:

    1. cannons pointed up and waving is a friendly sign, also the white flag and music/dancing.
    2. Never boarding another ship without invite, sends hostile intent vibes.
Fireworks are a good way to show friendliness, depending on the firework.
White flares are friendly/parley, red are hostile/keep away.
    3. Spawn killing/sinking TallTale ships is consider bad form.
    4. Messages to recently played with and/or game chat with megaphone to relay intent and disposition.
    5. Just rolling up on a random ship is a great way to get blasted.
    6. Give other ships their space, if your friendly, because they probably see you coming a ways off and are ready for a fight.
    7. Don't touch or get near another crews loot, good way visit the Ferryman.
    8. Understand there are very toxic people out there, and be ready to mute them because some people have no respect about themselves.
    9. People can and will betray an alliance, especially over an Athena, FoF or FotD haul. Be aware always to ship positions and crew locations.
    10. Carrying a keg even remotely near another ship is instantly seen a hostile.
    11. Lastly, understand this is a PIRATE game. You'll encounter every kind of person humanity has to offer, from the genuinely wholesome to the worst racist toxic trash you could imagine.
And always remember, you can just leave session and start again. Don't let people live in your head rent free or grief you into quiting. There's a lot of cool, decent people on the seas
  • @yskonyn
Been pirating for over three years now...

There is no honor amongst thieves.

    That is the etiquette.
If you run without a trustworthy crew, every pirate on the seas is deemed a threat. Just one crewmate could have ill intentions even without provocation. While sailing it's safe to assume that all ships are combat ready.

There are many bloodthirsty pirates out there so be aware, keep a distance, and always guard those ladders. When it comes to making a friendly Alliance, I suggest keeping a distance while having your flag up and ready to join. Spamming 'were friendly' or 'ahoy' could deter an attack. Alliances are sketchy so always be prepared for it to go south. Ship cosmetics might be able to tell the age of a pirate, but the hand-to-hand combat is where you find out how experienced they are.

IMO never fire unless fired upon.

Never let boarders on your ship.

If you have coin to spare, purchase crates to stock the boat.

Never trust a Reaper trying to be friendly

If your just sailing, always throw down a voyage for mileage alone

help your lone crew mate raise that anchor, please don't stand and watch lol (also never drop anchor)

If you go AFK make sure you're not on the wheel lol

While in a heavy battle, don't be afraid to run down below and grab a bucket of water for that pirate that might be struggling.

If you see the ship livery already equipped. Don't just change the skins, ask first.

I always cook food and provide meat for my crew, they're spoiled lol

    When sailing with new players....

Let them make all the mistakes lol...
then teach them the correct way.

And the most important rule of etiquette is to just have fun, and enjoy the adventures, Cheers!

  • Just be respectful towards others. Anything goes on Sea of Thieves, everything but toxicity and racism.

  • communication, ask its ok. but always expect to be fired on. we are pirates!!

  • As you can read communication is everything. With all it flawes and betray sometimes.

Sometimes it works out. I needed to be on an island where another sloop was. I took one of my chests and gifted it to them and everything was fine.
Could have also ended in murder.

There are discord servers where you can find good crews to join! I wouldnt recommend the ingame option "open crew". If you have friends which play thats even better.

  • Imo the general etiquette is to be less aggressive to Merchant vessels and if you find out that they are doing a tall tale let them be.

But it really depends on your mood, i almost sank an Athena ship but ultimately decided not to ive fixed their ship.

  • Read the Code of Conduct and observe it! Other than that, anything goes.

  • That’s a lot of replies! Thanks guys!

I am fully aware of SoT being a game about pirates. Pirate’s aren’t known for their dependable nature for sure.
Yet, we are also playing a game with open PvP where its rather easy to grief people. Or abuse gameplay mechanics to make life miserable for the other player.
Still, SoT seems to have a big healthy playerbase and in order for that to happen it must not be an absolute shitshow all the time or people will quit.
That makes me think there probably is some kind of etiquette and it shows from your posts! Thanks.

One more question: how would I make it known to others I am doing a Tall Tale? When I spot a ship coming in I just pick up the megaphone and tell them?
What if I am on site and not at my ship? Do people generally know its a TT location?

I’ve already enjoyed various weird and wonderful experiences in this game.
I’ve started playing it with my son, who is a young player and the very first quest we embarked on we were jumped by the crew of another sloop.
They had full sails in the wind, let their boat go on while they jumped off to board our docked ship at an outpost.
They immediately killed me and my son, camped, killed us again before finally turning around aparently having a change of mind and started to restock our boat and teaching my son how to wield his sword.
It turned a very unpleasant introduction for him into wonder and amazement.
But I still believe these two shouldn’t have boarded us like that.
Aparantly outposts are no kind of safe zone.

To be clear; I have no objection to open pvp. I am going in fully knowing its part of SoT.
But to have a fun experience in this gametype people will need to have respect for others to keep it an engaging community. Hence my thread here. Perhaps we were doing something unknowingly provocative to draw those two in? (Sail type, flag, cannon position)

At any rate, there’s some good advise here, for which I am grateful.
Its fun to see my son becoming of age to play games together and if we can show him how fun it is we’ll have another community member before long!

We are always up for doing Tall Tales and Quests or just having a good time with fun people. Always happy to learn from veterans so if you want to join up you can add me.

    Thanks again for the input!

  • Oh and @burnbacon thats unfortunate to hear. My experience has been quite the opposite and I always am very communicative and supportive to low level players.
If you need any help, drop me a note on Steam. Yskonyn there as well.

  • You cannot useful show that you are doing a taletell.

You can say it and many people will not fight you. But not everyone. Even if they know you are doing a telltale its not 100% safe.
Taletells have savepoints. When in doube use them. Even when you sink, you dont have to do everything again.

If you pick a time to play with your son, try to play in daylight times. The lesser players there are, lesser reapers are on their way. At example, if you play friday night with dopple gold bonus its more likly to meet an pirat which trys to sink you.

Remember that losing your ship is not the end of the world. If someone takes full control of your ship its not a shame to scuttle it via the menu.

  • @yskonyn If you are doing a tall tale yeah just tell them, mind you that some of the players are playing on Xbox and if they are in a group chat they wont hear game chat to type it as well.

Some players are mindless zombies and either wont understand or wont care and still attack but in most cases they would understand.

Obviously dont equip an emissary as it would make your claim sounds like a bs.

  • @yskonyn

Myself and my two sons started playing during first lockdown and the older one and I put many, many hours in during those first few months. We had a similar experience to you early on, parked up at Cannon Cove (I think) and all of a sudden our masts were down and the ship filling up and these glowing PL's came over and said they just wanted our supplies and one proceeded to rinse us while the other entertained us with sleight of hand. My youngest son got spooked and left the crew but these guys realized we were new and fixed our ship up. The entertainer found it amusing that my other son was sat on their yard arm watching proceedings and we got chatting (he was Polish but spoke very good english), he asked to join our crew and slapped an Athena voyage down which we did and then took us down the legend hideout which I was unaware of. Was an awesome session..

He sailed with us a few times before he went back to grinding LoL and he got us well on the way to PL with his sage advice. You really remember those kinds of encounters much more than the bad ones.. Some players are not like that at all but, as in real life, you'll meet all sorts on the seas. Don't take it personally if you get pirated!

Keep a watchful eye out and you won't get surprised very often and don't always spam "i'm friendly" because even useless crews might take advantage for an easy kill or simply not care. Most importantly don't carry more loot than you are prepared to lose or draw attention to yourself by flying those long pointy flags if you don't want too many encounters before you get your proper sea legs. Good players who board will spot a tall tale on your table and probably leave you be.

We sail with friends occasionally from US and Canada, those are always the best sessions! We've just discovered DRG too btw and are getting into it, seems an absolute blast!

  • Everyone has mentioned most everything already.

    Something Missing:
Often times to show you're friendly, many pirates will flash lanterns and/or play an instrument. Other friendly pirates will usually join in the instrument playing.

    Something Missing:
If you're wanting to try and approach another ship, in a friendly manner, make sure your ship's lights are on and you approach without your ship's cannons pointing towards the other ship, as best you can.

Any time I approach another ship/player/crew, in a friendly manner, I have already typed "FRIENDLY" or "I have a question", or something similar in the chat. On P.C., when you press T and type something, and you don't send it, next time you open the text, your message will still be there. No idea about XBox.

Also, as sort of mentioned, stay away from other ships, if you're trying to avoid fighting. If others you see don't care to fight either, they'll do their best to avoid you too.

When playing nice, if you need to go to an island, outposts included, and there is a ship already there, skip that island. Go back later. Imagine the feeling you would get. You're trying to turn in a bunch of loot and a ship pulls up. Unless they are new, they are going to be in fight mode.

No matter how you play, it REALLY helps to use in game voice chat. If you end up near others, you can always say hi and whatnot.

I do highly recommend using push to talk, so you and your crew can communicate and plan (in Discord/etc) without others hearing y'all.

Welcome. Don't forget. We all get destroyed from time to time. Just go into each session knowing that the loot isn't yours. You're taking on jobs and if you want paid, well, you have to turn it in. So, don't let it get you down whenever you lose it. Just keep playing and you'll be making tons of gold.

  • Not much to add to the things already said. But ill add my thoughts on the matter, even if i repeat some of the things already mentioned.

Generally someone with cannons all the way up, is one of the oldest signs of peace, and some still use it. Not everyone respect it though.

Also sinking someone doing a Tall Tale is mostly considered rude. If we attack someone doing a Tall Tale, and we see it when boarding, we disengage the fight and repair the ship and leave them alone. (But if they are flying an emissary flag while doing a Tall Tale, we will collect the flag as that is a PvP beacon.)

Also using foul language is considered bad, but as we all know it happens on the Internet(s).

Otherwise everything goes, but as was already said... COMMUNICATION is key to every encounter.

It also helps to use pirate talk, and generally role playing while murdering other crews. It helps to reduce the saltyness on the seas. Basically try to always be nice, and avoid foul language and unnecessary taunting. Some friendly taunting is fine though. :)

    EDIT:
Also remember that any form of Emissary flag is a PvP beacon. Raising an emissary flag is asking for PvP action. The reapers is by design the counter balance to the benefits of the emissary bonus system.

Hello Mr Yskokyn, funny name and not adequate if i see how concern you are in how you come over to other players ... Now , Sea of Thieves has always been a game that undergoes "waves" ... In the beginning , almost everyone spoke , and there were a lot of Friendly Pirates or Pirates that were hostile in their playstyle but not in their speech , after all it's a Pirate Game and some good shenninganning was always welcomed ...

You see, we are Pirates , and trusting flags could be sometimes a mistake , Alliances can be broken by a stab or shot in the back...Sialing straight to another ship without any kind of communication , voice or written , is often , also by us , be seen as hostile ... i always run to the cannon when a ship comes heads on towards our ship...

On shores ,you see how Pirates act or react at your presence , mostly people today don't speak anymore which i personally find very sad . If they start emoting , dancing then they don't have immediate hostility in mind , but those that come at you without any gesture or word written or spoken are to be taken carefully...

In a Pirate Game , loyalty , can be a word that is easely laughed upon so take that advice at Heart, but , there are also Pirates who once an Alliance is made would go through Hell and Fire to keep their Alliance comrades afloat or alive...

In other words , there aren't many rules , this is a game where you have to trust your gut feeling , sometimes you are wrong and sometimes not and sometimes you have adventures or experiences in here that you will ramble out in the retirement home on your 100th Birthday...

Whatever people on the internet or reviews may have written , i still feel that this is a once in a lifetime Game , it will take years if not decades before a different Developer will make something similar or alike in feels and diversity of Gameplay...

i try to talk , write , make Alliances , but if shots or cannonballs keep flying around my ears ,i feel allowed to defend the Crew and myself , so that's all the advice i could give , all the rest is something that you can alter in the good or bad way by deploying your Personality to the fullest in this game and it's many different encounters...

  • @dislex-fx sagte in What’s the etiquette in general?:

I wouldnt recommend the "We are friendly" route. If someone uses any friendly emote or text next to me, my alarm bells goes off.

It is often used by attackers to buy some precious seconds to attack. Thats my expirience from some encounters.

Talking, yes, having questions, yes. Being a human, yes.
