Pirate Cove

  • I have been playing Sea of Thieves since launch and I've had a lot of fun upgrading the look of my ship, of my character and of my tools. I think that something like a Pirate Cove should be added where pirates can upgrade and have a place to call home. Much like Athena's Fortune it could be a secret cave or something that you need to unlock. A place where when you get more money it would start to fill up with gold much like the ending of the Tall Tales.

  • @daddysheev36 What does this add to the sea? Imo if it doesn't add to the randomness and the adventure it's not worth having. This seems like a place for a person to hang out and not be playing.

  • @captain-coel I think it would be cool to have a base of some sort and you can show them off to your friends. Although I also think more islands in the game would be good cause i love exploring in this game and I've been everywhere.

  • I said this on the discord shortly before you posted this, so you may not have seen it:

    Overly suggested idea sadly
though I don't think it's a great idea as it takes away potential player interactions for someone to goof around in their own personalized area

I think the issue boils down to what you're doing when you're doing it. If you're trying to check out ship cosmetics, you can do so at the outpost by checking horizons and applying your cosmetics. You can check out the clothes you've bought by purchasing them at the outpost, and then while sailing, try them on when you have a moment of nothing at all happening in between your voyages.

If you're standing around not doing anything, that doesn't necessarily keep the Sea of Thieves alive, and going to a private personalized area for you to hang out in is the complete antithesis of activity. The fun stuff you do while hanging out is playing the game. A "Pirate Cove" isn't playing the game at all, I'm sorry.

  • Well I have a few more ideas that are more like what you and talking about so maybe ill try those and see where they get to. Thanks for the feedback though.

    Upgrade what?
You can buy different cosmetics but not upgrade anything. And if you meant buying stuff, well you can do that at any outpost. Adding an extra "secret" place where you can buy the exact same things doesn't make the game better at all. And if there would be exclusive items that you can only get from there it would just become a PL hideout vol. 2.

    So?

It's not like people would only hang out there and never set sail in Adventure.

I think it'd be cool if we had our own personal hideout where we could decorate it with cosmetics, locked by commendations. Another way to sink our gold.

I wouldn't stay in there forever though...

  • @theblackbellamy Yeah this is exactly what i was thinking.

Sometimes it's not wise to assume the logic of another person, this isn't one of those times.

The amount of casual players that would love to sit in their own bubble than search for treasure, slash skeletons, and deliver cargo only to lose it all to another player would be astronomically concerning and begin to have some players wish for support of the mindset Rare has consistently and vehemently tried to settle down once and for all since their Second Podcast Episode.

I would personally be more than fine if they strayed far away from that, as it goes against the player interactions players are supposed to have out on the seas, than sitting in a place to check out clothes and ship designs.

  • @nex-stargaze I feel like you are misunderstanding a bit, its not like its going to be another athena's fortune sized tavern where you can buy things but more of a camp where you can see progression and stuff, dont put any shops or treasure in there and dont allow treasure to go in, just a place where you can go and sink your gold into some more. Make it a Pirate Legend only thing so that you have to play the game to get it.

Would you oppose custom servers for the same reason? As these would pull people out from public Adventure servers, sometimes?

Also, presumably, if people wanted their hideout to look nice, they would have to "search for treasure, slash skeletons, deliver cargo" and whatever else needed to unlock and fund the cosmetics for the place.

  • What if it was like a staging area for crews to gather prior to setting sail on the server? Similar to how arena is setup. The pirate cove would just be set to whomever the host is that's setting up the crew.

  • It should just be a cosmetic place for you and your friends. Your ship would still be docked at the outpost like if you were messing around at the outpost.

In my opinion, should it be a priority? Nope. It wouldn't be a bad thing to add.

If you are worried about "players not being on the seas" well I hope you are complaining about the ability to just portal hop, red sea running, alliance servers, etc.

This doesn't hurt anybody. If you feel your server is dead then load into a new server.

  • tie it to activity/result every month like an event to pay your dues to access it

first month for new players is free of the requirement

It would be casual friendly like other events but it would still require people to turn in some loot to access it.

This allows people to have their areas but also still focuses on keeping people active to a reasonable degree

could call it a "toll" and you have to pay it to the ferryman and he is the one that takes you to your spot or whatever little lore thing people wanted to make it

  • I made a similar suggestion awhile ago...
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/132267/personal-hideout/1

As long as it’s not a safe harbour within Adventure, I’m in favour of a personal space of some sort

  • I personally wouldn't mind this if it was done right. So some things that would be important.

    • Money sink associated to it. It needs to be very good at draining funds to make it look cool so you want to show it off sometimes. Why? To ensure it is something that encourages people to play the game to earn the funds to make their place look cool.

    • It needs to be fairly small overall. A confined space will leave little to actually do in here. At most, it will possibly give you a chance to look at your stats and chat with friends before you go taking up a slot on a server.

    • Quick loading to Adventure, Arena, or Maiden Voyage. This area should have spots where you can interact to quick jump into Setting Sail for any of the Modes. This is again to encourage people to get out of the area and go and play the game.

    • You need to be able to invite your Crew here. This would make it a sort of staging area, but this is important because being able to peacock a bit provides motivation to do things with this area, which since it will take funds to handle means you are motivated to get in the game and earn.

So, it needs to not encourage you to spend all of your time there, but be something just cool enough that you want to engage with it some and showoff to your friends with. Of course this won't interest some folks, and I think that type of player will just not use it generally. Those who do use it, it might actually give them MORE motivation to get out on the Seas and engage with the actual core of the game.

If you can strike the right balance with this concept it will actually do more good than it would do harm to the game.

  • I don't understand the concern of "taking away players from the seas". Currently, if I want to hop on and try on some cosmetics (which I do quite often), I have to take up space from a player that might actually head out onto the waves. If I had a private island I could use, I would be able to mess with cosmetics without taking away a spot for an active player on the real servers.

This idea is good, but to just make a place where you can "hang out" and do nothing more is stupid.

I suggest rework the sea dog outpost and make it so that you can get inside it.
