(SUGGESTION) "The Pirate Opus" - An in-game wiki

  • I'm sure one of the things most of us can agree on is that the game doesn't explain itself very well. There's a wealth of content in the game now, but I feel unless you have an experienced friend to play with or spend your time reading Sea of Thieves wikis or Youtube videos, a lot of it could well pass you by. And to me, this is a flaw. I like that the game doesn't hold your hand and the element of discovery is a major part of the adventure, but I feel Rare can do better.

So here's my proposal. Functionally it's somewhat of an in-game wiki - let's call it the “Pirate Opus” for now. And in-game it would be themed like a pirate journal, located in its own tab next to where the Pirate Log is now. Perhaps is can be gifted to you by Larianna, a relic of a fallen pirate who set out to document the Sea of Thieves – and now that mission falls on you.

It would already contain a number of “stub” articles to cover the basics of the seas but omitting enough information to still nudge players to explore more. And as you make new discoveries, these articles expand or new pages are added. For example, there might be a section on fishing that explains there are different fish throughout the different regions and are attracted by different kinds of bait. And when you make a new catch, say an Anicentscale, the page is updated with new information that these fish are found in the Ancient Isles and are attracted to leeches.

Ideally, the Opus would be a nice mix of lore and practical information. Recording information about all elements of the Sea of Thieves - the islands, enemies you come across, tall tales, world events, different kinds of treasure you find etc. And it would be nice if it recorded any journals you read so you could read them back whenever you wanted.

It would give players a way to find their feet a little and be a nice way to look things up or remind you of things without breaking the immersion and having to Google stuff. I also think it would be a good way to flesh out the lore of the game, which I think can totally go over the heads of people unless they go out and look for it or read about it outside of the game itself.

  • This would be really nice and the lore behind it is a nice touch.

  • Naw fam. The idea is adventure and figuring out the world before you. I've learned everything I know from other players and the sea itself.

  • So what your essentially asking for is an ingame Lore tab or Grimoire. Which is a Library/index of all the lore txt you collected ingame.

This has been suggested before, the reason why this was turn down was the devs wanted you to repeatily go find the lore as A)they would grow and B)They are part of the world and the advenventure so you needed to venture to see it all the time. Now i myself don't agree with this reasoning but thats what it is.

  • @lygushkia As I explained, details in the "wiki" would only unlock as you discovered them, retaining the sense of adventure and exploration. It would only start with enough information to nudge players in the right direction and encourage them to uncover more themselves.

You said yourself you found stuff out from other players. I consider the fact the game relies on having more experienced players explain things to you as a failing. It might be nice to think that all players will just uncover everything through exploration. But the reality is newer players that don't have other people to explain stuff, are just going to Google things and watch YouTube videos to understand the game better because there's so much content now to catch up with. I think it would be much better if there was an in-game solution to this.
