It's supposed to be a grind, if you want the curse you have to work for it. It's even easier then ever with checkpoints.

You don’t HAVE to, you choose to. Just like any achievement in any video game.

Because it's supposed to be an ACHIEVEMENT

if it was easy, everyone would do it.

It will seem a bit less grindy if you do the story arc in order each of the 5 times. Also, there is some randomization, so you might get different subquests each time (though Oddly enough, each time I've done the Star Thief one, I've gotten the Crab idol (the boring one where you don't have to move from the same room to find the vault)
